World Passport Collection on borrowed points

We are planning a trip to Aruba via the World Passport Collection for the summer of 2008. I was wondering if the you had to have current points available in the account when the trade comes through, or can they be borrowed points. Our use year is August and we want June 2008 or August 2008 (whatever becomes available). If the trade comes available, should I have 2007-2008 points available or can they take them 2008-2009 allotment? I hope this is clear.

I know that I could call MS for this but figured I would ask here first. Thank you for any info you can provide.

My understanding is you have to have the points available in the same way you would if you were actually reserving a unit. You can use borrowed points as long as they are accessible for the date of the unit given up to II.

That is what I thought. I had hoped that I wouldn't have to keep one year's worth of points not "in use" just to be sure that we had the correct amount of "current" points, when the exchange came through. Thanks for your response, Dean! :wave2:

Maybe I wasn't clear. The points only have to be there at two times. One when you place the search and the other when you match it. In between, there's no reason to keep the points available other than you may lose your exchange. It doesn't have to be the same points you started with and i doesn't have to be points you could use for the day you accept the exchange, only for a week they can schedule and give II which would likely be several months from the day you say yes.

IMO, anyone trying for an exchange should plan ahead in this area just like they would for all other points accounting and future reservations. You don't want to get stuck not getting you exchange and not being able to bank all the points.

lts862,

Just wanted to give you some extra info about exchanging DVC in Aruba....

I put a search into the system almost a year in advance for a one bedroom villa at "The Marriott Ocean Club" for Sept 05. Never thought I would get it because I had heard it was a tough trade. We found out March 05 that we got it! The best part too - they gave us a 2 bedroom unit for the one bedroom points!! (144 points) The unit was absolutely gorgeous, huge and had a great ocean view. It was perfect! Just thought I would pass this info along.

Good luck with your trade and have fun! Aruba is beautiful!

You can get anything you want for Sept, any many other time, in Aruba and that includes a 2 BR at the Marriott in most cases. Aruba is ONLY a tough trade weeks 52-16 but even then some weeks are easier than others.

We are planning to go in June or August so I would think we have a pretty good chance of getting our request. We will be requesting a 2 bed at either of the Marriott properties. I have heard that many people get upgrades to 2 bedroom units, but we don't want to risk not getting it.

DH and I love Aruba and are looking forward to bringing the children with us, this time. We will be celebating a milestone birthday for DH.

Thank you again, for your help.

Summer, esp during school breaks, is a much busier time in Aruba than many people realize. Since it is essentially out of the hurricane belt, the demand is higher than the rest of the area. I wouldn't be very optimistic for June or August at the Marriott's unless you can hit the shoulder season of the very first part of June or very late August when many have gone back to school. That's especially true for a 2 BR. I think it's actually unusual for upgrades to a 2 BR in general and especially at these 2 properties. Marriott owners are actually quite good at locking out their units and trading or renting them separately. For 2007, you should have any search in place by 13 months out from your first date. Remember Air costs are a bear for Aruba as well.

If you will consider other properties, your chances of success would be better but you would definitely be downtrading. You may also want to look at a private exchange which would also guarantee your view request.

Ooh, I thought we'd be okay for the summer months. :worried: Staying at a Marriott in Aruba is non-negotiable. We are going in 2008 so I will put the request in, in June of this year. I guess I should give TUG another look to see about a private exchange. I don't know why that makes me nervous......

Dean you have been so helpful. Thanks again!
