Trying to decide between picnic lunch and Ariels Groto reservations. Could someone please tell me about the picnic lunch, I know it's for the first show only, but when do you have to pick it up and where do you sit to eat it. Is it really worth getting reservations for either, with seating(rather standing) for WOC. I understand both come with fast passes, but do you really get priority seating(standing)? I've read how hard it is to see the show, especially for children. I don't know if I can stand for two or three hours in a line. There are 7 of us, 4 adults and 3 elementary age children. Thank you for any information.

I put a full review (with pics) in the trip report linked in my signature, but here's a brief overview of our experience:

We got two picnics, one adult and one kids (though we are both adults). The email/print out Disney sent me said we could pick them up anytime between 11:30 AM and 8:00 PM. We decided they would be our lunch rather than dinner, and picked them up at 1:30. We didn't have a clue where to go, but easily found it because there are several signs that say "WoC Picnics this way/etc". There was no line and it only took maybe 5 minutes, if even that long. It was a rainy day, so we decided to actually take them back to our hotel to eat inside while we let our clothes dry out, etc.

So, there is no specific "place" that you have to eat them at. There was a lovely little area right there to sit in that we would have used, had the weather been better. They give you the meals bagged up in the totes they come with, so you can literally take them anywhere. You can eat there, on a bench somewhere else, your hotel, wherever you choose.

We got passes for the blue section. We also didn't want to waste a ton of time waiting around for this, especially because we lost a lot of time because of the rain. We got into the viewing area about 10 minutes before show time and were lucky enough to get very good spots to stand. I'm sure it helps that the crowds were low that day, too. We opted to stand in the "wet zone" on the boardwalk, but we didn't feel like we got wet at all.

To add to this you will either end up with a Blue or Yellow ticket if you get a picnic. AG gives you a view that is centered in the prefered section. With the picnic you can ask for the other color but it isn't guaranteed that it is available on any given day.

I picked my picnic up early and took it back to the hotel and had it in the evening. Near where you pick them up is a nice grouping of tables if you don't want to carry them anywhere.

No matter how you get the show FPs your wait is about the same. Waiting areas are formed about 2 hours before the show but thier is no line up. About 60-75 minutes before the show the clumped up group is allowed through a gate into the viewing area. You will want to get through that gate and find a spot against a railing. Once in the area you can come in and out as long as you retain a FP. There is a preshow about 25 minutes before the show starts.

Just to clarify a couple things:

1) WoC picnics do not necessarily have to be for the first show. If you order them in advance, you will get WoC FP for the first show. If you go up to the window on the day of, you will get WoC FP for the second show.

2) You do not get FP with both the picnic and the dining options. The picnics do come with a FP that gets you into the colored zones, just as if you had picked up a FP from the machines. HOWEVER, the dining option has its own reserved seating section that is separate from the other colored zones. This section is, in fact, a better viewing area than many of the spots in the colored zones.

3) There is no seating area, even in the reserved dining area mentioned above.

We picked ours up at about 5:15 and sat at one of the terrace tables, which gave us a PERFECT view of the 5:30 Pixar Play Parade while we ate. ;)

is Ariel's Grotto a character meal? I know I could probably find this when I have time to look but is the dinner package accessible without doing a character meal?

There are no princesses there during dinner anymore.

We did the AG/WOC deal the day after Thanksgiving. The food was fantastic, after dinner they give you a ticket with a return time, ours said 8:30pm. We learned from a CM two days before that the prefered seating is not has hectic as the regular FP lines because there aren't as many dinners as compared to FP's. So, around 8pm we returned for WOC. We first went through a roped off area at the lighthouse on Paradise Pier (show PS ticket), walked to another check point (show ticket). Here is the area where the line up is the blue FP people line up in the queue with blue lollypop lights and a blue sign that says "Blue Fastpass" There is a similar area for yellow FP's with corrisponding lights. In the middle of those two colors is the PS area with white lights. The colored lines were fairly long by 8pm, the PS had maybe 15 people in it. We waited for about 10 minutes before they let us into the viewing area, by then the line more than doubled. Then we staked our claim at the railing (almost lost it) and waited for about 45 minutes for the show. No more pre-show.

I did ask a CM why no sitting. He gave a few different responces 1) Disney could fit more people in the area if they were standing 2)Safety, in case eveyone needs to get out quickly, it's safer if everyone is already standing (complete BS, if some traggic event were to happen the crowds would trample everything/one in their way because they're panicing) 3) the fountains fire over 150" into the air. if you were sitting down it would be a lot like sitting in the first row of the movie theater and here there is no back rest. (also BS, partly. Yes some of the fountians shoot that high, but the ones with the projection screens are no where near that high. The higher shooting fountians are newly added by order of managment so that more people could see the show.)
