I just made reservations for Ariel's Grotto in August and I was surprised that they didn't require a credit card to book. They just took my name, which is used as the confirmation number. Is this normal?

Yes that's normal for all dining reservations with Disney Dining.

Tours & Fantasmic Dessert Seating are the only ones you pay up front for.
