Working the System - A NYE PTR - Link to TR is up! 1/13

That is awesome news! I bet you all are happy to have her acceptance over with... now on to more fun stuff in her senior year.:goodvibes

Congrats to Kendall for getting the school she wanted. I've been through this process four times, am so glad it's over.

Wow - I am just stunned at how complicated it is to choose a school in the US - but CONGRATULATIONS to Kendall for getting her first choice. :thumbsup2

Way to go Kendall!!! I hope all the soccer stuff plays out in her favor and she gets a great aid package too!

Now what does this school do and where is it? I figured out the California part, what is Poly SLO?

Congrats to Kendall!!! That is awesome news! It sounds like she definitely has her priorities in order putting academics first and soccer second.

Jill in CO

I think so, lots about it that make us nervous for sure but very happy for her at the same time.

Cynthia that's great news. Early decision is a gutsy move, but that's an excellent school, so academically she can't go wrong. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things work out for her for soccer as well. She is going to be one busy lady next year.

Congratulations Kendall! :thumbsup2

I'm more concerned about the major thing...."some science major" is what she picked. She can't even remember! Scary. Hopefully it is something that crosses over well if she does end up transferring. Academically I can't see her having a problem really with a transfer but I just read they do upside down curriculum (major classes 1st 2 years and GE 2nd) so it's pretty key to be happy with what you picked. UGH. It's just so frustrating as I know her mom probably didn't really lean on her hard about what she was picking and why and all the application stuff was done over there. It is interesting, it says it's binding but she doesn't have to accept until 1/15. Which would imply you could decline...?

It is a stunning school and a great one, she is over the moon happy.

Jeff on the other hand isn't. He's pretty annoyed that there will be no option to compare offers, doesn't see how anything can be binding and seems to think she can still consider other things but the reality is, she wouldn't hear from another school by 1/15 anyway so... it is what it is I guess.

Congrats to Kendall!!!! :cool1:

If she got her first academic choice the whoo hoo. I hope she can play soccer and I hope all the other items like aid etc. fall into place.

I am sure this is a great decision and now all the "spring stress" is also gone.

I hope she can play too, no spring stress (we had enough with Taylor we deserve the break, Evan will be stressful I am sure lol).

I think that was really smart of Kendall to go with the academic choice first. Ultimately, that's what really matters...what if she loses interest in soccer? This way she can't lose!

I just hope she isn't banking on soccer panning out, hopefully it will and I don't think she is but I'm really not sure (or even know if she is, if that makes sense).

DD is a freshman here at Loyola, and my DS is taking his first ACT in just over a week, so I know the process well. Ugghhhh.

UGH on the tests, I think K took the SAT 3x and the ACT twice. SO not looking forward to that but we do get a couple of years off.

Declaring a major sounds a bit of a pain, but nowadays it's the way to go...DD pretty much knows her path and has started classes in her major already.

I'm stressed about the major part, she isn't, Jeff isn't but I am. LOL! She can't even remember exactly what she picked! I'll hopefully get more info today, she will be over later to do the tree...and work on her AP Calculus with Jeff lol. They start major classes immediately at Cal Poly so that definitely complicates the transfer issue, not to mention you'd need to qualify to get into whatever it is you are transferring into. Depending on what she did pick originally that will indicate how easy or hard a later transfer might be as you are definitely accepted into that specific college and major at admission and each has their own criteria. Loyola is a great school!

What a relief to you, I'm sure, that this part is over (for a few years at least!) :goodvibes

It's funny, I think b/c the soccer thing is still a ? we don't quite feel like it's settled but in most ways it is.

Congratulations to Kendall! That's awesome!!

Thanks!

It is nice for her to "know" that is for sure. She is SO excited about it! different sort of stress for us now.

UGH, we have 2 more. Evan will be a doozy, I know it.

Very different system, that's for sure.

Fantastic news, congrats Kendall! So good for her!

LOL! California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. There is one in Pomona too, she will be at SLO.

Great News! Congratulations to Kendall!!! :cheer2: :woohoo:

thanks!

I hope that she enjoys SLO! And congrats to her for making such a big decision.

I hope that she enjoys SLO! And congrats to her for making such a big decision.

I think she will, she is over the moon happy and hopefully next weekend will go well, she has been playing amazing! She did pick a good major for her I think, it should transfer well to others that are related if she needs it to. It's about as close to a general science degree as she may be able to get from there and for now, that's perfect.

Cynthia - I just had to comment. I feel Jeff's pain. For some of the schools Nick applied to it was really hard to predict what his aide would be. Coupled that with the fact that some schools required a separate application for aide (Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech). GT at least sent that application to the parents. VT did not and Nick completely missed that deadline so he was offered no scholarship money there. And my gut was he might have been offered something because got his acceptance early (about 4 weeks before the majority of acceptances went out).

On the other hand, Nick was never passionate about any of the schools he toured. So to have that passion is great. I wish Nick would have "loved" one of his school choices. He just didn't. Not to say he isn't happy, because he really does like UD and he's happy there, but it just would have been nice to see some passion because I feel like his perfect school is still out there undiscovered.

Another thing - I find it odd that at Cal Poly you can't transfer majors. GT was just the opposite - your major did not factor into the acceptance decision at all because they said everyone ends up changing theirs. So interesting.

Anyway - if she is excited then she will do what it takes to succeed. Hope the soccer stuff goes well next weekend. :goodvibes

Glad you had a very nice Thanksgiving and anniversary get-away. :)

I hope everything works out wonderfully well for Kendall with her college choice and the experiences she will be having for the next four years!

Congratulations to Kendall! It sounds like she's got a good head on her shoulders and made a great decision.

All caught up!

Happy belated anniversary!! It looks like the two of you had a nice little getaway :)

Your plans look great, and it is always nice to have some options.

Congratulations to Kendall for getting into her number 1 school!!

He was pretty ramped up over the whole thing yesterday, a nice 6 mile run in 26 degrees helped cool him off a little :rotfl2:

As you may recall, his ex basically refused to bother with the FAFSA for Taylor. So there is that battle to fight and honestly it will not surprise me if it happens again. Taylor filed it the second year and did get a grant that year, and a smaller one the year after. So that means it will all be merit or soccer if the soccer even happens. Merit is considered with the application so nothing extra to file to at least here is that. Jeff's ex seems to think all the amounts are quite small. All the merit ones come from the major or school you are accepted into so who knows what is really available. Obviously it being out of state tuition for us, it makes a big difference. It's a battle that we knew was coming but it's still not fun, basically his ex seems to think that when it comes to college the kids shouldn't have to bother with things like financial aid forms and loans and regardless of the cost, they should go where they want. Given that they obviously did that for Taylor, kind of are stuck with K.

Either way though we won't know on any of it till spring.

She is VERY passionate about the school and has been from the first day she stepped foot on campus so there is that and that goes a long ways for sure!

Well she can transfer, just not now. You can transfer after one quarter. Problem is, is that major course work starts immediately, so the longer you wait to transfer (if you even can get into what you want to transfer to) the more you might have to make up as some of it won't transfer over (or I guess would end up counting as an elective). They really cracked down on it apparently in the last few years as apparently a lot of kids were getting in to the Ag & Food science programs and then transferring into Engineering which is very strong and competitive there. With the changes it's really like re-applying to the school, but for the major you want to switch to instead and with the caveat that you may have to redo a lot of the major classes, it definitely discourages the thinking of trying to just "get in" to the school and switch later. Even in the GE section, 16 of their GE classes are to be in the major area. In looking at it her freshman year looks pretty major heavy (unless I am reading it wrong lol) but some of those are likely transferable as long as she stays related...like if she switched to Chemistry or Biochemistry it might all move over well.

That said, I actually think she will be fine now that we have seen the detail of what she picked (Biological Sciences), there is a lot of flexibility in the concentrations available with in it (Anatomy and Physiology, Ecology, Field and Wildlife Biology, Marine Biology & Conservation, Molecular & Cellular Biology) and based on what she thinks she wants right now, should work very well. She's toggled back between Field and Marine for some time (used to be Veterinary but decided against that) and so if that holds true she will be ok, and she's got a couple years before picking the concentration. The big draw for her at Cal Poly was how hands on and in the field these programs are, they are quite impressive!

I hope the soccer stuff works out, they did see her play twice last weekend but I don't think it was the main coach. She's been in contact with them to let them know she is coming, and that she has been accepted already. Right now she also plans to attend the spring ID camp as well if she doesn't get a spot between now and then. And then try to walk on if need be. It is a refreshing approach actually as most of her friends who have commitments went with who wanted them, but it wasn't about a specific program or college really, just if it seemed to meet their needs and the soccer was the greater need for them. She seems very cool with it all.

Glad you had a very nice Thanksgiving and anniversary get-away. :)

Thank you! I am SOOOO behind on your thread, one of these days I will get caught up!

Well done Kendall!

Here's a couple of Freya's newborn photos when she was 3 weeks, and then at Halloween, need to upload some more recent ones.

I bet it did! Hopefully it was 26 and sunny! That definitely can improve the mood!:thumbsup2

OMG - I think you DID tell me that. I thought you HAD to fill out the FAFSA, but I guess not. You know I have a friend who is a PA and her husband is a nurse anesthetist. She told me their student loans are so horrific that it will take them years to dig out of it. And both of them have very well paying jobs. The reality of the expense sets in after the loans come due. She said it really, really impacts what they do on a day to day, month to month, year to year basis. I feel so fortunate that I went to school before the tuition went through the roof.

She is VERY passionate about the school and has been from the first day she stepped foot on campus so there is that and that goes a long ways for sure!

Definitely. If she has to take loans she doing it for a place she loves.

Makes sense. University of Maryland was somewhat like that. Their engineering program was capped and if you didn't get in to that college than you had to apply after your freshman year. You went in to the college of arts an letters.

In Poly tech schools a lot of the GE courses are fulfilled by the major. I know that Nick only has a handful of GE classes that he can actually pick from. Most are from his major as well.

I think its smart to start out major heavy. I'm sure its a weeding out tool. Nick has noticed a huge disparity in how some kids are prepared versus others. Some kids were lost within several weeks. He said he noticed right away the difference in what schools call "AP" classes. Some AP classes are legit, but he's run into other kids where their AP math class was really just a glorified math class. It was an AP class in name only.

I bet they are. I know their engineering programs are like #1 in the nation. That's very impressive. Those kids have perfect SAT scores.

I hope the soccer stuff works out, they did see her play twice last weekend but I don't think it was the main coach. She's been in contact with them to let them know she is coming, and that she has been accepted already. !

It all comes down to what is more important. I know that Nick decided academics over soccer, but his choices for soccer were really limited. If she really wants to play soccer she can certainly go the walk on route and the club route. I'm sure their club team is very competitive as well. I really do hope it all works out for her. Fingers crossed.
