Working moms: How many hours a week do you work?

I work full time, 40 hours a week, plus cart my kids to dance and soccer four times a week. (soccer ends soon though) My hubby is deployed, so i cook, clean, do the errands, and pay the bills all by my lonesome. I'm stressed. I'm lonely. I wish with all my heart I could stay home and be with my children. I am missing their childhood, but we can't afford to live on NY's tough economy if I don't work. (I can't wait to get out of here!!!)

Oh, I've also just started cha cha to try and make some more money.

I work at LEAST 40 hours a week. Some weeks I work up to 80 hours a week. It is incredibly hard on me and DD but I don't have much of a choice in the matter! She is now in preschool and she is in the same building as me so that is helping some.

I'm a Children's Librarian at a public library and I work part-time, evenings and weekends, anywhere from 8-15 hours a week. I'm home with the boys during the day and DH takes over when I go to work. It works great for our family.

To the OP That is a great schedule. I hope the job works out!

I currently work 3 nine hour days since DS was born. It works for us for now. DH works an extra job a few weekends a month as a bartender to make up the difference in my salary. It gets him out of the house with his friends and he does come home with a lot of money too!

I orignally told my boss i"d like to go PT for 1 year, DS is almost 2! Shh, don't tell! ;)

High school teacher here. I work about 38 hours a week, not including take-home stuff (which varies...some weeks there is nothing, some have something every day). My principal works with me, since I have one son to drop off at a preschool that doesn't open until 8. I'm supposed to be there at 7. I come in at 8:15 and stay until 3:30 normally.

However, I have 2 weeks during Christmas, 1 week during Spring Break, multiple other holidays (3 days for Thanksgiving, not counting the weekend), plus about 10 weeks during the summer. Technically, summer isn't paid, but we budget around it so we can have off with our children.

I think teaching is one of the best occupations for a working mother (or father for that matter).

:surfweb: Well, I got the job! I had it to begin with, and I counter offered the wages yesterday afternoon... I just heard back and didnt get the increase I was hoping for, but all is well. There was no harm in asking! It was a big step for me to ask and I think I grew alot as an adult in the whole process.... "It was time to pull up my Big Girl Pants" :rotfl: I will be contracted for UP TO 39 hours a week during the school year and only 15 in the summer. I will still be able to volunteer with my sons ski group on Tuesdays a 1/2 day this winter and scoot across should i need to see my kids, drop soemthing off or whatever.... Not to mention no Holidays, weekends or nights. I will in by 9 am and out by 4:30 ... Not so bad!!? Right??

Awesome! Great schedule!

I work, but am fortunate to be able to work from home and schedule my appointments around my kids. I sell Real Estate here in NYC. I am also an Arbonne consultant. I do a few parties a week, but a majority of business goes through my website {repeat customers}. I don't think I could ever go back to a regular "9-5" job.

I had almost same situation as OP last year. I also took the Job. I did it all of last year and did not return this year . I went back down to 20 hours I did not like missing class parties of my youngest and missed volunteering in her school. For us, I work for me, so I am blessed that way. For our family we have decided that one of us must always be home with the kids we didn't like them coming home to a empty house (High school and Middle), We did daycare when they were young and I worked full time. As they get older and more involved in school/sports, I don't want to miss their stuff, High school events start at 4 pm and with away games/meets I couldn't get there in time. So we make the budget adjustments and I only work part time. It works for us.

The responses are great! I apreciate all of the support!!! I have worked 2 days in the additional position. So far its has been good - till trying to get a schedule nailed down and ironed out, ut it will come with time! And every other Friday will be even better!! Today was a teacher workshop day due to Voting, so it was nice to get a day home with the kids! :surfweb:

OP- you just need to find what works for you and what a good balance is. I work 40-50 hours a week. Sometimes more, but the hours I work allow me to still spend time with DD and do what I need to do at home. I'm a single parent so the option to not work isn't there.

I'm a WAHM and I also work out of the house. My out of the house job is 22.5 hours a week. My WAHM can be 60 hours a week depending on how busy I am, but its very seasional - just in the summer mostly.

I work full-time and run a small private practice. I also help out with the bookkeeping for my husband's business. All told, I probably average 55-60 hrs/wk.

It all seems to work out though. Because DH is self-employed and extremely "hands-on" in raising our children, we share the responsibiliites and the kids are quite balanced.

OP, good luck in your new position, I have no doubt it will work out great for you!:thumbsup2

I work 40-42 hours at work and as a teacher I work for about a half hour a day grading at night after the kids go to bed.
