working from home

I wish !!!

I'd love a part-time home job.

Gee anyone need some data entry done?

I am in the process of starting a side job at home. Since I work as a secretary in law enforcement I have decided to try transcribing on the side. I already do it at the PD. I got my own transcribing machine from the company my office bought the one I use at work. This week I had my business cards printed professionally. They look much better than the ones I could have done on my computer printer. Now comes networking. The reporter that comes to the PD from the local newspaper, told me she would circulate my card to the various courts, lawyers, and PDs she goes to and I will do likewise. If this works out it could mean a little extra money at WDW! I like the idea of being at home and chosing my own hours!

Tuffcookie, great idea. I do transcribing at work, too, and have a machine at home for when we get really busy. I looked online for legal transcribing work, but it wasn't a fruitful search; I imagine the web market is glutted. Making cards and passing them around the legal community is a great idea! I would just need to figure out what I would charge; I imagine it would be less than what I earn as a paralegal, but heck--can't beat earning extra money in your jammies!!

One thing I do do from home is make first level edits to manuscripts for textbooks. A friend of mine is a graphic artist and does layouts for the texts; she parcels out this kind of work to me to save time on projects. Basically, I make all of the changes the proof-reader marked on the text. It's boring, but it pays fairly well. I have no idea how to break into that market--it just kind of fell into my lap.

I work at home doing medical transcription for a nearby hospital. I do this full-time while my son is at school. I love it! I did this for about 4 years but got a little stir crazy and decided to go back into the hospital to work. I lasted for about year before begging to go back home...I couldn't stand all the office politics, etc.

I sell software and work from home or on the road.

I love my job. I work at home booking Disney travel for an internet agency. It is great because I get to be at home for my kids and I really enjoy what I do.

I've worked at home on some level for 19 years. My degree and professional experience is in journalism/public relations, and I do writing, editing and newsletters. Most of my work is for nonprofits. When each of my three children was little, I did just feelance work for a few years. For the past six years, I've had a part-time job and supplemented with some freelance. I had my most lucrative client -- paid me the same monthly and I did whatever it needed -- for 15 years! Unfortunately, financial problems on their end forced them to let me go in January. At the time I had one other freelance job -- the local arts council's quarterlyl newsletter -- and worked 24 hours a week at the local hospice doing communications and fundraising. In February, I switched my jobs and freelance! I now work 25 hours a week doing programs and the newsletter for the arts council and do hospice's newsletter freelance.

Here's my advice to those of you who become independent contractors. Keep track of absolutely every business expense you have, even if it is just a stamp or a ream of paper. Contract work is in a very high tax bracket b/c you owe self-employment tax (roughly twice the FICA you pay as an employee) in addition to your state and federal tax. Also, explore whether you can qualify for a home office b/c that will allow you to write off a lot of your income. And last of all, charge enough! Almost everyone I know charges too little when they first start out.

I worked for a chocolate company part time for around 16 years and once I had my daughter I didn't want to spend so much time away from her (I do have a full time job so I am out 8 hours a day 5 days a week) so now I am doing work at home for the chocolate company doing various jobs plus I do mystery shopping for a few different companies, online surveys that pay, test products at home for a company, sell on ebay...anything that will make me a buck or two extra!

I worked at home running a family daycare for 11 years. It was a lot of fun while DS was growing up!
Great way to make a great income at home and still be with your own kids!
