Just found out that at our annual convention in November we will be hosting a dessert party on THurs night from 10 p.m. til 1 a.m. even though we are expected to report at the registration desk at 6:45 a.m.!! We used to be "free" beginning at 3 pm on Thurs. I CANNOT physically do that. Ihave psoriatic arthritis. I can't be up til 1 and be downstairs at 6:45. The conv. takes a serious toll on me physically as it is and the only way I can function is by getting enough rest. I'll have to explain this to my boss and get a dr's note if he wants it. THe rest of the staff will also have a problem with this I am sure. It's exhausting for everyone.

Will you have a break between 3 and 10? Maybe you can plan on getting some rst during that time. If not, I think it is a lot to ask to work from 6:45am until 1am. I am exhausted just thinking about it.

Denae

I think I mis read your post. They are keeping you up until 1am, and expect you to be back at work at 6:45am? That is ludricous, too. Is there some way you can take shifts at each event so that everyone can get enough rest?

Definitely plan on napping before we have to take people out to dinner that evening...but for me, even with a nap, I can't sleep just 4 1/2 hours.
We are all expected to be at every event.

A dessert party from 10pm until 1AM?!? How much dessert are people going to EAT? I take it that dessrt wines, alocohol, etc are being served? I can't imagine *why* this reception is going on SO long.

Sheesh, whose bright idea was this? I bet The Boss isn't staying until 1AM and then has to be at the reception desk at 6:45 the next morning.

agnes!

Because these guys love to schmooze and "wheel and deal"! They are so annoying.

The boss retires Dec. 31 and I think won't give a darn by then! :rotfl:

That is ridiculous. You can't be required to stay until one and thenm up and at 'em before 6:45. Think about it, you are out until 1 then back to the room and then you have to wind down, be up early in order to get ready and where you have to be by 6:45. That's poo in my book.

Can you just make an appearance? If not, I would just be honest and say you can't do it....or maybe I would magically come up with some 12 hour "I ate something that didn't agree with me" bug.

Now my co-worker said it finally dawned on boss that it's TOO LATE! Whew.

Wow! And I felt bad when I had to work from 8:00am - 7:30pm! You poor thing. How wrong of a company to do that to someone!

Please do not tell me on top of it all you are exempt and not going to be paid overtime, not to mention night differential pay.

OVERTIME? What's that? :rotfl: Nope, we are all on salary. Works to our advantage of course when we need to leave EARLY for a dr's appt. or something like that.

Having planned business functions previously, I see it differently. If the OP hopes to influence a change in the plans, then it might need to be handled sooner rather than later. Plans for large conventions can take months, and often rooms are reserved this far ahead of time for parties and such. Trying to make changes later might not be possible. For example, if they decide they want a room for an earlier time slot, other groups may already have them reserved.

OP, talk to your boss as soon as you can to express your concerns (especially now that it sounds like he is realizing the error of his ways, lol!). Good luck!
