Work situation, I'm just shocked

There is too much worrying about other coworkers in the workplace. Show up, do your job and go home at night.

I totally agree. In 14 years, this is the only thing that has bothered me...we have a coworker who is VERY into "what is this one getting that I'm not"...I am really not like that and hate that it sounded that way. I am not doing anything about it...I was just venting.

Oh, no but we are worried he will "forget" this if/when someone else needs the same special treatment.

I always think comparing one person's situation to anothers is very hard to do. Two situations are never exactly alike.

I also think more slack should be allowed for someone who has been there for 25 years vs someone who has only been there 5, 10 or even "only" 20 years.

Have other coworkers worked with this person for the whole 25 years? Over the course of the 25 years was there ever a time when she might have given more back to the company than necessary? Work ethics have changed quite a bit in the past 25 even past 5 years. Keep in mind that I am not saying everyone today has bad work ethics.

and quite frankly, if I was 65 and I had health issues that required 3 weeks off, then I know I would probably say "F it", I AM going on vacation. Who knows if it might be her last? Also, maybe it may appear to coworkers that those health problems were minor, but maybe there is more to her health than she is sharing? Life is way too short.

I think the employees at your company are way too concerned with what someone else is getting and I hope that if they are ever in the same situation that they DONT get the same treatment because they are being so petty.

I think I was shocked because I worry over asking to leave 2 hrs early for a dr's appt, so I know that for me, personally, I would just NOT take the days...but now I know to NOT do that.

I also think that getting sloppy and disrespectful of the freedom you are given at the workplace will backfire on you too. Sorry :(. I know it's frustrating when you feel that someone else is getting special treatment.

Who said I'd be disrespectful? I meant I would go ahead and discuss options with my boss, rather than just ASSUME I couldn't take vacation.

Sorry! I misread what you said. I thought you were saying that you were going to take a page out of your co-worker's play book. Of course you should discuss your time off! Just don't bring up the co-worker and her special treatment.

Right. Gotcha.

It would be nice to believe that a 25 year employee is entitled to special treatment. But they are not.

the problem i could see with a loose policy like this is if it's with a company that use a formula of actual earnings vs. salary for determining a pension.
if thats the case the person who "borrows" could retire into a year in which they've borrowed from and while they might get those days not earned but allready used deducted from their final pay, their pension may be figured at a higher rate than they are actualy eligible to (my former employer used the prior so many years vs. the current maybe 6 months).

in that case i'de be ticked if i had followed the rules and used awop for an uncovered illness and the person who did'nt walked away with a larger pension.

Well said!

Unfortunately life, especially in the work place, is not fair. I know this firsthand, because I work for a family business and it drives me crazy when the boss' sons stroll in every day at 11AM, take 2 hour lunch breaks, and leave at 4. That's when they actually bother to show up. Meanwhile, I felt guilty the other day because I had to leave 20 minutes early to pick up my daughter from camp.

I would literally drive myself crazy if I dwelled on how unfair it is around here. But I have two choices, either stay here and deal with it, or find another job. So far I've just been too lazy to start looking! ;)

It sounds like this woman has been a loyal employee for a long time, and she is appreciated by management. I would try to focus more on the fact that she has been unfortunate enough to require 3 weeks worth of sick time, and less on the fact that she may be getting more than everyone else. Hopefully your employer would be as understanding with you if you were in the same situation after 25 years of employment. Sounds like you have a sympathetic manager, which isn't exactly a bad thing! :teeth:

She is getting the same salary...they HATE to deduct from someone's pay because of the "problems" it causes them, her words, not mine...by the way SHE is the bookkeeper.
