So... DH is in training in OK and we're here for three months. I applied for a job at a bookstore chain, and the hiring process was dragged over a month. Now, as soon as my drug test comes back negative, I think I have the job. But I won't start until late next week or early the next, which means I will work for a month, then have to give two weeks notice, for six weeks total of work.

Now, the manager said the job is temporary for a big project the week of May 10, then after that she'll decide who to keep on. So, I could be let go after the temp project ends... But she knows I have a college degree and was talking about moving up in the store at my interview. (I don't know if that's typical - this is my first retail interview!)

But, if I'm not let go at the end of the temp project, will it look bad? I mean, she could give me a bad review for only working six weeks...

But, this bookstore has three stores in Spokane, where we're moving, so I could work here for six weeks, then transfer up there. Is that hard? Would they do that? Then I wouldn't have to job hunt as seriously up there. (Or at all, if I really like the job.)

Oh, and did I mention - one of my benefits is a free paperback book every week. Every week! Up to 52 books a year! They wouldn't even have to pay me with a benefit like that! (Yes, I'm already making a list...)

Sorry, long post!

I it is a chain store, I don't think it will be a problem to transfer.

I worked at BlockBuster and it was fairly easy to move about within the chain.

What I would do is -- when yu give notice, tell them that your DH got transferred. It sounds like he is the primary wage earner in the family, so it would be natural for you to go where his work takes him.

BTW - I would love to get a free book a week!

P.S. You should sign up for the paperback exchange!

What I would do is just tell them you're only interested in doing the temp work for now since you're not looking for any long-term stuff there. However, I would ask if they're hiring in the city you're planning to move to and see if you can get a job there. Since the boss knows that this is only a temp job, if you tell him/her up front that you can only do it on a temporary basis there, then it shouldn't make you look bad. Just be sure to tell them that you are interested in working for the company full-time if you get the chance and see about job openings where you'll be moving. Good luck :)

Wow I would love the book benefit!!

I think I would be up front with her. Tell her that you would like to work temporary but that you might also like to look into transferring if you like the job.

Its definatly not hard to transfer with most retail companies. I have a good friend who worked here with Office Depot for only about 6 months. Her husband was transferred to the Memphis area and they transferred her with no problem. I actually don't think she was out of work but for maybe 2 weeks, the moving and then settling in. She probably could have gone to work earlier if she had wanted.

With 3 stores in Washington that makes it even easier, there is usually a huge turnover in retail and you could definatly work your way up to managerial or possibly even not have to work your way up with your college. I know Melanie (my friend) had worked retail in our mall before Office Depot and she was bringing home almost $40,000 per year as an assistant manager at Office Depot which, as you know, is GOOD MONEY FOR HELL (oops I mean Mississippi :teeth: )

Good luck!!

Wow a free paperback book a week. I need to go work at a bookstore. I would just explain the situation to her and tell her you are interested in the temporary position. Also, ask for her assistance in transferring to another store.

::yes:: My dad basically agreed with y'all - I'm going to let her know when I start. And ask about transferring. Thanks!
