The whole key is your first two stab in the dark words. If those are good, then usually the only way you can lose is if you have more possibilities than chances left or you repeat a bad letter. My first word covers the two most common vowels and the two and three most common non vowels plus a 5th letter that is common. My second word covers the two next most common vowels, the most common non vowel and two more common ones.
Between my two first stabs in the dark, I have 4 of the 5 vowels covered the one left out being least common, the three most common non vowels and three more common ones. If my first stab in the dart word gives me two or three letters, I'll usually go off that. If not, I'll try my second. Note that no letters are duplicated between the two.
Today I got Y W W W W So I had to use my second word
Y W G W W
G G G W G I knew I had it won at this point even if I were just stabbing in the dark because most of the letters I had left wouldn't even make a word.
I got the word on guess 4. That was the first actual 4 ever for me. I have never lost
In order of number of guesses.
3 is most common for me, then 5, then 2. Four and Six tries have one each. I've never hit it on the first try.
I used to play a game called double cross a long time ago until it became a toxic stew of craziness among the participants.
