Just had to share... took a bunch of baby clothes and old sci-fi collectible plates and put them up for auction, and almost everything sold! DH is so excited that we have more spending money. It's not like it was doing anything for us except sitting around the house taking up space :)

A great big CONGRATS to you! I've been reading about selling on ebay and I'm going to give a try sometime soon. I'd be thrilled if I made $40 but $400 :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

My problem is that the things I have that would probably sell I want to keep -- my Beauty and the Beast plates, snowglobes, dolls -- even though all I do is dust them I can't bear to part with them.

Again though, congrats!! Treat yourselves to a nice dinner or something!!!!!

I love Ebay! I've been buying from them for the last year, but only within the last few months have I been selling - and I'm doing great too! I have really been able to clean out my closets with motivation now. Some people's junk is other people's treasure! With just a little research into what's selling and at what price, it's not difficult to figure out if your item is going to sell. I've sold clothes, china, jewelry and small appliances and have made over $600 this month alone. I don't consider it pure profit, but my DH isn't complaining either!

Have to love Ebay and money for the WDW fund! Good for you. We did the same thing a fw years ago and no one would believe that I paid for our Hoppers with the money we made.

Have fun!

My question is how do you get started selling on ebay?

I have bought things off of there but never sold.
Thanks
Sharon

Well, start out by selling a small item first. Research on Ebay to find out if that item is selling, what it's selling for, what the average shipping charge is (this can be tricky), etc. My first sale was a trendy blouse that I purchased at the mall that still had the tags on it, but I never wore it. There are some abbreviations that help. NWT=new with tags, NIB=new in box, NBW=never been worn. These are used in the Title. But I'm getting ahead of myself. You just have to jump in and start. There's no secret method, it's not rocket science. When you click on "Sell", it's very user friendly and will take you through the sign-up step by step. If you have any particular questions, email me back and I'll try my best to answer them. Go for it!

Congratulations!!! I really have to get myself set up on Ebay. I have bought many Disney Pins, but now it's time to sell!!!:teeth:

My tips:

Pictures - make sure you get a photo, either use a digital camera, or a service like Snapfish for regular film, to get your photo online. Ebay gives you the first photo for free, so take advantage of it.

Pricing - search for keywords for "completed auctions" to get an idea of what things sold for.

Timing - I read somewhere that auctions ending on a Sunday do the best... maybe it's because people have the weekend to browse....

Shipping - Go to the USPS website and you can order FREE priority mail boxes and labels. Then you don't have to buy your own.

There's a ton more but I'm sure there are more experienced Ebayers here than myself. I've only sold a few things, but I just happened to luck out that they were someone else's treasure!

I went to the USPS website, but I can't find where to order the free priority boxes? Can you help me?

We have been having the WORST luck with EBay lately, things just don't seem to be selling like they used to. I wonder if it's this economy thing or the turmoil the country is facing?

Try http://supplies.usps.gov

Then go to Shipping Supplies on the left hand side. I browsed in both personal and business use. Some of the boxes offered in business use are not listed in personal, but I ordered from both areas, so I don't think you have to be a "business".

I noticed that you are going to the VWL in May. I just "rented" 218 points on the DVC rent/trade board and booked a reservation for a 2 bedroom villa at VWL for October 17-22. We've never stayed at a DVC property before, always at the Polynesian. Do you like it?

BTW, thx for the tips for the USPS website!

I was just reading EBay, and noticed that they charge you fro selling stuff. It makes sense, since they need to make money somehow. But can someone explain this to me? Do I cut them a check or what? Is it bad if I only wanna take checks and not mess with paypal or credit cards?
I have about 300 cd's and I'd be willing to part with half of them.
Thanks.

They take out the fee from our checking acct automatically each month. You also pay a paypal fee unless you only accept money orders and cash, you probably get more buyers if you accept paypal, I know I usually don't buy if I have to get a money order. Paypal takes the fee out before you get the $$.

MTMom, we have not yet stayed at VWL yet, but it seems like a beautiful place. We bought in because we go to WDW at least every other year, and because with the kids, it is nice to have the extra room for privacy/nap time, etc. It's like having the benefits of a deluxe resort combined with comforts of home. You can pack lightly because you can do laundry in your room. You can save money by eating in your room, or if you like to eat at the restaurants like us, at least your leftovers can be saved and reheated rather than going to waste. You should check out the tour of the villas while you are there and see if vacation club ownership might interest you!

hAm53 - you set up a seller's account and they will charge your CC or debit your bank account (I believe they do it twice a month, if anything has accrued over $1). The fees are based on your starting (insertion) fee, and your final price that it sells for. As the seller, YOU dictate the terms of sale, so if you only want to accept checks, then just make sure you say so in your description. If you have CDs, you might want to try half.com also, as you can list as long as you want until the item sells, whereas the maximum listing on Ebay is 10 days. Here's the explanation: http://half.ebay.com/help/tour/how-sell.cfm A slightly different set-up than Ebay, but unless you have something really rare or hot on Ebay, you'll probably not sell it for as much as you want for it.

Good luck!

You might want to check out half.com for selling CD's. It's much easier to list them there and there is no bidding. You set the price and then just wait for someone to buy.

I've also had good luck selling used cd's to www.secondspin.com. They don't always pay top dollar, but if you can mix in a few higher priced disks with the cheaper ones the checks are still pretty nice. They don't like scratched disks though, so make sure if you send them something the disk is clean.

hAm53 -- You might want to rethink the personal check. I hate to wait to see if the check will clear and I will no longer accept them. I do not want to be sitting around for 4-10 days with items piling up. I do Paypal and love it as both a seller and buyer. It makes things fast and easy.

Also, from personal experience, I think items that do not have reserve prices sell better than those that do. I am reluctant to play the guessing game of what price will they sell for...When U sell I set the minimum bid at the minimum I will accept and let it go from there.

I just sold $300 worth of Christmas dishes and still have more to sell! I might have gotten $30 tops for them at a yard sale. Instead I ended up making money as I sold them for far more than my purchase price (they're discontinued). Unfortunately, the money's not going into my Disney fund right now.

Good luck with your eBay venture!
