Woodpecker problems

I have woodpecker pecking at our front porch column and put a decent sized hole in it. So far I put up aluminum foil to deter it from coming back, but who knows if it'll work. It was recommended on a website, so I'll give it a try, but of course it stated that sometimes it doesn't work. It's a temporary solution. It could be because we cut down a few dead trees around our property along with the neighbor taking down some of his.

This is the 2nd time this year we've had woodpecker problems. In May/ June we had one on the 2nd floor banging against the rain gutters.

I'm so ticked off right now.

A 20 gauge or 12 guage shotgun will solve that one quickly.

Not that I'd ever do that, of course. Shooting woodpeckers is against the law 'round here. :rolleyes1

Yep, they are federally protected. I think I would have to file for a permit to get rid of one.

I put up a Halloween windsock out there and a big rubber spider. They hate spiders, so we'll see if that works. ;)

I think i heard that they are afraid of Owls. (a decorative one of corse) I don't know how true it is but it's worth a try.

We had one when we lived in Michigan. I filled the hole he started with steel wool. He didn't come back. I would think the aluminum (I'm assuming crumpled up in a ball?) would be pretty much the same.

We have one that wants to live with us. Every day at the same time he comes and starts tapping on the walls. We bang on the walls and he leaves for the day. It can take a few days before he leaves for a month or two but he still wants to live with us.

that has worked realy well for neighbors of ours. we have a problem with them in our neighborhood. not so much at our house but i suspect that's because we have a couple of resident owls living on our property.

neighbors who have had problem have bought the cheap owl decoys and put them on their roofs-those that had problems with woodpeckers report they no longer see them around.
