We are looking for a new kitchen table to seat 6. I'm looking for a basic rectangle table but real wood that does not cost a fortune.
We live in Ohio.

Any ideas of stores to look at? We have been to amish stores which are great but are to much in price. Most big box stores seem to have veneer. Any ideas?

We got ours at World Market (I think it is called Costplus in some areas).

If you or someone you know is willing to build your own, try this. DH and I are going to build this in the spring. It's more than $110 total (we don't have all the tools needed, and we're buying them, but i'm sure you can get around that huge investment by borrowing tools). It's going to be a great piece for us to have forever, and it's extra special because we will have built it together. You can also alter the plans to make it smaller if desired. Love the benches as well!

If you do build make sure you use quality wood. Starting out with quality materials can greatly impact the look of the final product. I also concur that getting the Kreg pocket hole jig is a great way to go. I just built a gazebo over our hot tub and made extensive use of pocket hole joints. I couldn't tell how they intended to mount the table top to the legs but directly drilling through the top down into the legs is not the way to go. You should use z clips like these...

The top will expand and contract due to changes in humidity and the z clips allow for movement. Plus you wont have any drill holes through the top of your table.

We also got ours at World Market about five years ago and have been very happy with it. I was in Costo a couple of weeks ago and saw a real nice set at a reasonable price. Wish they would have had that when we were shopping for one years ago.

We also have a World Market table in our formal dining room and it's beautiful. Making your own is another great idea! We have a local company called James and James that makes tables and ships nationwide, so you could try that, too! Good luck!! I searched forever for mine...never dreamed I'd be so particular about a table, lol!!

Do you have consignment stores? I have seen some wonderful tables and some decent prices as well.

Thanks for the insight! We are going to use "regular" pine for the legs, and for the top we're still deciding what we like (I'm loving red oak). We have a good lumber place in town we'll purchase from. The Z-clips will be something I'll show DH-- As for the plans, I think the top connects to the legs from underneath somehow. I don't want to take this thread off-topic; once we start our project I'll share my progress with my own :D

Thanks everyone for your ideas.
I saw one at Costco last week and today it was gone!

I agree. WE got ours from World Market as well - expandable table (to seat 4-8) with 6 chairs for $1000. It's rubberwod, though, which is very soft so it's had some surface issues. But rubberwood is a renewable material, and I love that fact. Now Costco has a few tables that are super cute and around the same $1000 price.

I know there are a lot of Amish in Ohio....perhaps you could find one of their shops. I know we have a lot of Amish here in PA and they make beautiful furniture and it is reasonable in price.

Do you have Oak Express? We have bought several pieces from there at reasonable prices (they have things that aren't oak too).
