I'd like to make a simple mickey head trivet type thing to set hot pans on.

It could be round or square.

Could I use a fairly cheap heat resistant paint and sealer? What kind of sealer?

OR do I just want to print out the mickey I want and glue it on then seal it?

I wouldn't paint or seal it if you intend to put hot pans on it. I'd use a wood-burner tool to create the Mickey head. You still run a minimal risk of marring the surface if you have a pan that gets hotter than usual, but if it doesn't take long to make it could be replaced.

My father has an electric tool that rotates & you can put a chisel tip on it. That might be another way to put Mickey's image on the wood.

Unfortunately, it wouldn't qualify as "simple" but the best way to do this might be to use a router to create a recessed area - smaller than your smallest pan - in the center of the trivet. Then put Mickey's image inside the recessed area. That way the pans wouldn't touch it.
