You'll have to tell us a bit about yourself before we can help you decide if this is wise.

How frequently do you intend to visit WDW? For how long? How large is your traveling party? Ages? What size acomodations do you need (studio, 1BR, 2BR)? When do you visit (in season or off-season)?

However, that is a very good price for 50 points ($48 per point) so if you can get it its a good value. I suspect that it won't pass DVC's Right of First Refusal though.

i have a family of 4

That's under $50 a point. There's no way it would pass DVC's right of first refusal. All resale contracts have to go through DVC for approval. Disney has the right to buy the contract at the same terms if they want. They will take this one, guaranteed.

Check this thread by Donald is #1 here on this board that will give you an excellent idea of what price contracts are making it through Disney's Right of First Refusal (ROFR) process. It also tells you what contracts did not pass ROFR which means Disney exercised its right to buy the contract at this price despite the fact that you as the prospective buyer wanted to purchase it and then you would be back at "square 1" so to speak and would need to find another resale contract to purchase (or you can purchase a DVC contract directly from Disney). I am no expert but in my humble opinion what you mention will very likely not pass ROFR.

Best wishes shopping for your contract. :goodvibes

Best of luck with your decision on whether to purchase or not. I know that can be tough! :goodvibes

DVC is not for everyone, but my husband and I love owning. If you are okay with staying in studios, 55 points can get more than you might think. Just to give you an idea, I based the scenarios below on a 55 point contract at OKW. As OP suggested, look at ROFR thread, but I would say a more realistic price is around $4,125 ($75 per point).

* 5 nights every year in a studio at OKW (55 points - Sunday check-in, Friday departure) during the summer
* 5 nights every other year in a 1-BR at OKW (110 points - Sunday check-in, Friday departure) during the summer
* 5 nights every third year in a 2-BR at OKW (150 points - Sunday check-in, Friday departure) during the summer

Some things to consider:
* OKW has a cheaper point structure than some of the other resorts. So, 55 points will go further there. AKV and BWV also have "standard view or value" rooms, so they are options as well. The key will be if you can book them at the 7 month window. (Resort owners have a booking priority at their own resorts 8 - 11 months in advance of their stay. At 7 months, the window opens for all DVC members.)
* Maintenance fees for OKW will run you around $260.15 in 2009 for 55 points. Each year, they go up around 3 - 5%. Contractually, I believe they can go up as much as 15%.

For more scenarios, here is the points chart for OKW: http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/OKW-Points.shtml

Here's the link to a vacation calculator, which will do the figuring for you:

i started with a 40 pt contract at OKW, so i'd recommend it as a good way to start. (i like to travel in nov/dec when pt costs are cheaper.)

OKW's studios with 2 queen beds make it a better fit than other studios which only have one "real" bed and one sofabed...but you may eventually want more room and need to add-on points (which is easy.)

i'd agree you would need to offer more money than that, though, or you will lose the contract when disney decides to keep it...

RCI Points has, at least in the past, allowed access to select Disney Hotel properties. As of this week's announcement, DVC will be switching their exchange affiliation from II back to RCI effective 1/1/09. Details are sketchy -- not sure if DVC will trade through RCI Weeks, RCI Points or possibly both. Stay tuned ...
