Wonderful Stay at Polynesian LVC

Just returned last night from our best WDW trip to date. We stayed 7 nights at the Polynesian LVC. Prior to the trip I was going back and forth on whether to request the 1st or 3rd floor. I ended up requesting 1st floor close to the lobby and we got room 1502. The location was perfect. We used the patio often and the kids would run out to the beach. It was very convenient. I remember reading that 1501 is the most requested room. I wouldn't choose that room if you plan to access the beach from the patio often because it has low plants in front of it and guests had to enter their patio from the front side of our patio. Overall, I was concerned about privacy on the first floor but it was not an issue. No one walked directly in front of our room where there was grass, except on two occasions when guests in room 1501 came in or out of their patio. (I only recall this occurring twice.). Also, you cannot see through the sheer curtains into the room during the daytime hours.

Check-in went great. We arrived at 3 PM and our room was ready. We were taken in a cart directly to our room and were told to check in when we were ready. The kids changed into their swimming suits while I checked in. Soon after, the kids received a sign picture from Peter Pan and Snow White with balloons. My 22 year-old niece received balloons for her birthday.

Our room was clean and there were no problems. One night we returned after turndown service and we couldn't locate the remote control to the TV. DH is obsessive about his remote control and he looked everywhere with no luck. We think the turn down service CM might have accidentally taken it with her with dirty towels. We called maintenance and they brought a new one within 15 minutes. I also lost the key to the safe and reported it in the AM before we went to the parks and it was replaced by the time we returned at 1 PM (with a $35 charge).

Chef Dick actually remembered us from our 2000 trip, which I couldn't believe. He said, "I see you brought your niece again". Actually we did bring our niece but it was her look-alike sister from our 2000 trip. The concierge services were wonderful and the lounge is very large and relaxing. The staff was great. I think we only made it to the late evening offerings twice as we had PS most evenings and were not around during the 5-7 PM time period. They had Miller Lite and Heineken beer available upon request. Also chocolate milk. I'm sure there were other items that could be requested. A side note - one morning we saw a mother in her robe with her 4 or 5 year old in her PJs, both barefoot, in the lounge. I am not the most observant person but they really did look out of place compared to everyone else that would come to the lounge dressed and ready to start their day. I had to constantly remind my DS to put his shirt and sandals on to go to the lounge as requested by the concierge staff. As already stated, it was just something I noticed and would have personally felt uncomfortable doing it, but the staff did not appear to have a problem with it.

The pool was crowded but we were always able to find a couple of chairs. The kids had a blast at the pool and loved the volcano slide (well, I enjoyed it too!). It seemed every afternoon for a period of time the pool was closed for about 30 minutes while they adjusted the chemicals. It was a bit frustrating but the kids either swam in the quiet pool or we went on the water mice/sea racers. These new ones were definitely faster than the old ones and were so much fun. At times, there was a lot of activity on the water which made me nervous with my 12 year old DS driving but I bit my tongue as much as possible and he did great!

We always struggle between whether to stay at a MK or Epcot resort. We love the location of the YC/BC but the Polynesian is so much more relaxing and we enjoy their concierge services much more. It also seems less crowded. We find the lounge much more kid friendly than at either the YC or BC. We enjoyed the larger size of the lounge and the food offerings better at the Polynesian as well. The location of the Hawaii longhouse also gave us more freedom with the kids, as everything is close by. We could let them play on the beach and keep an eye on them from our patio or let them go to the pool while we would follow in a few minutes while I gathered everything we needed. I felt comfortable letting 12 year-old DS go to the arcade alone. At the YC/BC, I would not feel comfortable doing this because those resorts are so much bigger and more crowded and it can take up to 10 minutes to get to the pool from our room. Then try finding your kids in the huge SAB pool!

All that said, we will probably stay at the YC/BC next trip only because of its close location to Epcot and MGM, the family's current two favorite parks. You can't beat the Epcot' resorts proximity to these parks. However, I have no doubt that we will return to the Polynesian!

Let me know if you have any questions. I will be unpacking and catching up at work so please be patient, I will check back!

Glad to hear about another great stay at Poly concierge. Can't wait to go back!!

Disneyhappy so glad to hear you had a nice vacation. We will be there in a couple of weeks. So looking forward!! If I could bother you with a quick question. My kids love the water mice (I know what you mean about being worried, I always am too!!). I read on the Dis that they increased the age to 16. Did your 12 year old have any problems renting a water mouse? My youngest will be 16 the day we leave (how's that for planning?? Actually our schedule just worked out this way.) and is worried that he won't be able to rent one. Also, we haven't been in the Hawaii building since they did it over, last year we stayed in Tahiti. Did you notice any changes? Sorry so many questions!!

Again I am so happy to hear you had a wonderful time!! Thanks for any info you can give me!!

Hi, DisneyMim!
Much to DS's chagrin, WDW did change the requirements to drive the water mice. The new requirement is that the driver must be at least 16 years old with a driver's license, to operate the water mice alone. Otherwise, a licensed driver must be with the operater of the vessel. DS was hoping to operate it by himself, but I sat with him in the pasenger side. He wanted me instead of his father so there would be less weight in the boat and it could go faster. (Don't I feel privledged!) We bought the plan for 4 hours of boat rentals during our stay ($133 with tax). It worked out great as we had a lot of down time to use them. It was probably the highlight of DS trip (other than making it to the hotseat in WWTBAM).

My memory may not be the best since our last stay in Hawaii in 2000, but the decor does not appear to have changed drastically. It is still muted colors. The bathroom had a beautiful green tile floor. The only thing I don't like about the Hawaii rooms is there is one sink and it is inside the bathroom. I prefer the double sinks outside the bathroom, especially when there are three adults and two children in the room. We were able to work around it and it would not keep me from staying there again. We had 5 in a room at the YC with double sinks but the room was so cramped. The Polynesian rooms were nice and large. We never felt cramped. There was plenty of space for storage and for us to spread out. One night we played musical beds and DH slept on the daybed. (He is 6'1") It was a little short but he said he slept great so it must have been comfortable. It was very convenient being close to the lobby but if you are at the other end of the longhouse, you will be closer to the TTC. One AM we walked to the TTC to go to Epcot but the monorail was down and they were waiting for maintenance. They did not know how long it would be down. We were trying to get to the park before it opened to hit TT and MS early. We were told there was no bus service from either the TTC or the Polynesian to Epcot so we decided to drive. We got our car from valet and made to Epcot in time for the park opening. The monorail was still not running so even though we did a lot of extra walking, we were glad we decided to drive.

You will love the location of the Hawaii longhouse. The LV exceeded my expectations (we stayed GV last time). We would watch the fireworks from either the beach or the lounge where they piped in the music. I'm getting chills again just thinking about it. The hardest thing was leaving. I cried as I looked out over the lagoon to say goodbye to the Castle. I always feel sad when leaving WDW but I believe this was actually my first time crying. We had a truly magical vacation as I'm sure yours will be too. Let me know if you have any more questions. I'll be happy to answer them.

Disneyhappy, Thank you SOOO MUCH for your reply. I appreciate your taking the time. Well, my son will have to be content with being a passenger this time around. Personally I think 16 is a good age anyway. Last year we bought the length of stay package (Captain's package or Family Package, I've heard both names) for $199 for the whole week and boy did we use those boats!! I guess they did away with this, I'm not surprised. I know what you mean about the one sink, there should be two. We watched them working last year and it seemed that they were doing a lot of work. Glad to hear it came out nice. I too cry when it is time to leave, although I always know I'm going back. There is just something about saying goodbye to the castle. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Again, thanks a ton and glad to hear you had a good time!!

Mim

Sounds like a really wonderful stay. In 21/2 months we'll be back there. Can't wait.

I love GVC, too and we sometimes booked that. But since Wishes began, I REALLY prefer LVC.

Disneyhappy - we are going to the Poly in late August. Could you explain the 4 hour boat plan, I am not aware of this? Sounds like a great deal given the price for 1/2 hour of a water mouse (mice?).

Hi Disneyhappy
Thank you so much for the report:earsgirl: We are going sept. 17th and my DS is 16 years old but here on Long Island NY He can't have a drivers license yet, can they just be 16 years old or do they also have to have a drivers license? Thanks in advance

We are staying lagoon view conceirge at the Poly for a few nights in September:Pinkbounc and after reading your report, am now more excited than ever. Your trip sounded wonderful and it sounds like the service at the Poly was excellent. It is so nice to read a positive, recent review, as I have read a fair amount of negative reviews of the Poly. So glad that you had a great time!!

Thanks for the lovely review. While staying at the Polynesian LVC, did you happen to notice if either Luciano or Donna were still CMs at the Concierge Desk? Just thought I'd check! Thanks.

DisneyMim & Luvofdisney-
Your sons do not have to be a passenger in the water mice. They can operate them as long as they have a passenger with them who is at least 16 years old and has a drivers license. My son operated the water mice and I sat with him as a passenger. I hope this makes sense. If not let me know and I'll try again.

Packy-
I forget the exact name of the plan we purshased but it allowed us 4 hours of operating time at the marina on the water mice, sail boats and pontoon boats. The surrey bikes were not included. Each time we went out, they took our room key card. When we returned, they marked how much time we used. If we took out 2 water mice at a time, we were charge 1/2 hour for each water mice.

TheMMMLtd-
I'm sorry but I don't remember Donna but I did see Luciano. Jeffrey checked us in and he was super friendly.

Any more questions?

O.k. I understand that, O.k. so I guess my DS at 16 would also need his drivers license too besides being 16. Here in New york they are not permitted to have a drivers license at 16 only a permit which would be no good. My 16 year old is 6' 2" and it woukld vbe hard for me to fit in the water mice with him and be comfortable, he had driven by himself in 2002 oh well maybe next time.
Thanks for helping
Michele Spera
