In case you missed the planning report...
Me (36) and mom (72), travelling with my friend from work and his 3 (now 2 ) friends. Three night Wonder cruise, then 6 nights at WDW. First Disney cruise for all...
Wednesday, May 9
Up at 6:30 and down to the Mara for breakfast. I had a really good ham and egg bagel sandwich (better than McDonalds), some fruit and orange juice. Not bad for food court food...
Took the 5 minute bus ride to Animal Kingdom. Decided to get mom a wheelchair here as this park is so big. She really doesn't like to be pushed around, and is one of those "if you can't walk yourself you shouldn't go types", but I wouldn't take no for an answer. I think she was secretly glad later. My back was killing me later that night though...
I left mom to people watch while I saw "Tough To Be A Bug". Love this show. Got mom and headed to the first Lion King show of the day. This is one of mom's favorites. There was hardly anyone in the theater, and we were close enough for one of the monkeys to pick bugs out of my hair. Cute. Before the show I ran to the restroom and needed a drink (it's a long hike to the theater when you are pushing someone...so many hills), and had to go all the back to the middle of the bridge to find an open drink stand. I told the girl "you need a sign...last drinks before show" or something like that. I was very tired by the time I got back to the theater (they are nice enough to let you in the exit) . Good show as usual.
Went over to Dinosaur and I rode. I used to really like this one, but now I think it's just okay. One ride on this a trip is now plenty for me (not like TOT and R'n'R and Test Track). Went to meet the boys at the Tarzan show. First time I'd seen this one. Cute concert show, not great. The male singer was handsome! He reminded mom of her favorite Backstreet Boy (Brian).
Went back to Asia and on the jungle trek. One of the boys pushed mom through this, and it was a nice break. Animal Kingdom is the hardest park to push a wheelchair through. The tigers were all sleeping, so it was kind of dissappointing. The boys left (this is not their favorite park...we all definetely spent the least amount of time here) and I went on Kali. This ride doesn't thrill me...we have something similar at our local park (Kennywood) at home. I only got splashed a little...
Stopped for lunch at the chicken shop. Never knew this existed, and it was yummy! They have 2 of my favorite things...pot stickers and chicken satay. Mom and I each got a chicken and split a potstickers. Mom usually doesn't like this kind of stuff, but she loved the chicken! She was still hungry, so I bought a huge soft pretzel for us. Eyed the hard lemonade (since I love lemonade so much), but didn't get one. Maybe another day.
The last thing we wanted to do here was the safari. We had to manuever the wheelchair through the regular line, which is a bit difficult (especially trying to hold it back on the hills), but this is fine with me. I don't expect to go to the front of the line, just wish it wasn't so steep. It took about 20 minutes to get to the handicap boarding area. However, we waited another 20 minutes for the jeeps to come. We could have been on and off before we even got loaded on. They either need more handicap jeeps, or they need to space them out better. It took forever to board (some people couldn't leave their chairs), but we were finally off. Saw the usual animals...hippo, elephants, giraffe (no lions). This wasn't as exciting as usual...I guess when you can see animals from your balcony, this attraction loses some of it's allure.
Headed out to the bus stop. So many people would come up to us while we were waiting for busses at the parks and ask about the resort. We always told them it was fabulous!
Got back around 2:00 (later than we'd planned), Mom napped, and I went down to the pool for about 3 hours. Swam, read, had a few sodas and hit the whirlpool (the one behind the bar is very seckuded). I went to the bar for a beer, but they had hard lemonade. Knock..knock..must be opportunity! It was very good. May have to buy some for home this summer...
Showered and changed for dinner at Boma. This was a very good buffet with tons of choices, and at $19.95 (including iced tea) a great bargain. Had some great salads first...tried like 5 of the 6, and when the one chef person saw I didn't have it, she scooped some on my plate (after asking first). The coconut chicken curry soup was awesome. There are about 25 people behind the buffet cooking and answering questions. The desserts were wonderful...if you go, you must try the zebra dome...the CM who checked us in was going on and on about it, and he was right! Like a big poufy chocolate mousse thing. The pork with different sauces was very good...I had seconds on it (see, and I told you I don't ever eat pork). I'd choose this over Jiko for dinner.
Got the bus to the Marketplace. We passed the new Pop Century resort. It looks....interesting. I don't think I'd care for it, but I'm sure it will be a big hit. Went in a few stores, and got some stuff at World Of Disney. Only got myself a new Mickey antennae ball (good thing too...last week my old one lost an ear), the new 101 image screen saver, and something for someone at work. Probably a record for me here...I usually drop a couple hundred here each trip. The merchandise didn't excite me though. Don't care for the "4 parks, one World" stuff. Not much of a Disncey Club discount this time.
I decided to head over to EPCOT to catch Illuminations (mom hoped an AKL bus back). I hopped on the YC/BC bus. I guess I'm spolied by the AKL buses...I forgot that these resorts share a bus with Swan/Dolphin too. We waited awhile at Pleasure Island (the driver came to me and explained that she was early...she didn't bother to speak to anyone else on the bus). No one got on or off, same at West Side stop. Then, it was Swan, Dolphin, YC, and FINALLY BC. They are doing construction for the villas, and it's pretty messed up over there. I found my way out the back, and sprinted over to EPCOT (I had left the Marketplace at 8:10...it was now 8:50). Walked pretty fast, got in, and managed to make my way all the way to Italy before it started (I can move really fast when I want to). The show was good, but seemed shorter than I remembered it. I guess Illuminations 2000 was longer...
Headed out with the throngs, and stopped at Mexico to get a Mexican Donald bean bag for my friend in Chicago who loves Donald. I knew Test Track was open until 10:00, so I popped over there. Hit the single riders line and rode twice. Last ride was over at just about 10:00. Headed to the bus stop, and after waiting at AKL stop for about 10 minutes, a nice family told me to go over to the other side (the bus stops are in 2 sections...AKL one was closest to EPCOT). There was a CM a little ways down who I know had seen me standing there by myself and didn't bother to come tell me I had to go to a special place. Geez. We were put on a bus with All Star people. Thank God we were dropped off first! I know some people like the All Stars, but I don't care for them at all, and I know they have multiple stops so it would take awhile. Anyway, stopped at our store for some cotton balls, an AKL t-shirt, and a can of Mr. Pibb (mom carries the mugs in her Pooh bag, so I'd have had to go back to the room for it, then down to Mara). By the way, I love Mr. Pibb, and you can't buy it here. Got plenty in my refillable mug during this trip though!
It was almost 11:00 by the time I got in the room. Showered, trip notes, etc. Bed by midnight.
Tomorrow...MGM and Magic Kingdom.
