women wearing hats during the Anthem

At numerous kids sporting events I have noticed most men will remove their hats for the Anthem but the women do not. This irritates me. I feel people should stand up, shut up and remove hats during our national anthem.

If it is proper etiquette for women to keep their baseball caps on, I appologize to those of you do so and will change my tune but it just doesn't feel right to me.

I believe women are OK to wear hats during the anthem, but men should remove theirs.

Women are also "allowed" to wear hats in church. Men are not. I don't know the origin of this social practice. I will say that I find a huge difference between wearing a proper ladies hat as used to be custom and wearing a baseball cap.

As far as I have ever understood it, women are not required to remove their hats. I think it goes back to when women's hats were held on with pins etc and it would have been impractical for them to remove them.

Another theory is that it is a throwback to women being required to wear headcovering in church.

But I agree that men should take their hats off for anthems, at funerals, and inside. But also don't see why women shouldn't follow the same rules now, afterall we are wearing the same hats.

Oh it's entirely appropriate for a lady to keep her hat on. Can anybody say "hat head???"

I have a choice between a hat day or a hair day....I can't have both.

There is no written rule as to womans hats during the National Anthem.
BUT, here is the rule nonetheless,

If the woman is wearing a formal hat ( a fancy ladies hat, part of her matched outfit, church type, formal occasion type ) she need not remove it.

If she is wearing a casual cap, baseball, knit, ect, she cannot claim the ladies exception and she should remove it.

It is a far cry from a proper ladies hat held on with pins to a baseball cap. If a lady were wearing a cloche or a dressy hat such as women wear to church or to derby they can remain on. If you are wearing a baseball hat then remove it. Deal with the hat head for the few minutes, no one should be looking at you as all eyes should be on the flag anyway. ;)

LOL - the OP was looking at the heads instead of the flag. That being said, when wearing a casual hat (i.e. baseball cap) I follow the rules and remove it. (That includes in restaurants etc...) If I wore a proper hat - which I don't - I would leave it on.

What are the rules if a woman has a ponytail through the back of the ball cap??

Emily Post agrees:

Women are not required to remove thier hats. This comes from the time when women wore fancy hats that required many hat pins to keep them in place. Too much work to remove.

I always remove my hat.

Totally agree.

However, when DBF and I have gone to hockey games, when the announcement is made to stand for the anthem, the announcer clearly says, "Gentlemen, remove your hats." There are plenty of ladies there wearing casual hats and they don't remove them! Honestly, if it were me, I would also remove my hat (having an 80s bouffant, though, I don't wear hats :teeth: ).

I think most women are just so used to the old way that they don't think about it.

IMHO, it isn't a big deal and I don't even notice if women do or not - just not a big deal to me.

I agree.
