A woman in NC told that she was not allowed to eat at this restaurant unless she paid an 18% tip. They are saying that she did not tip adequately in the past and that they have to do this.

I know that a restaurant has the right to refuse service to whomever they choose and that you often see the notation on the menu that parties of 6 or more are assessed an automatic 18% tip, but I was always under the impression that tipping was optional?

Do they do this with every customer that they feel doesn't tip to their standards? If they are really so worried about the money that their waitresses are making then maybe they need to pay them more. Maybe the service she received wasn't worth an 18% tip and was a direct reflection on the service she received?

Oh, they just did themselves a HUGE favor, now they won't have to worry that they will get bad tips any more, good thinking. Now you are going to go OUT OF BUSINESS--smart .

We have a family member who we will not dine out with because they are cheap tippers. For a $100 bill she might leave $5 - and that would be for great service. I don't know what she was tipping, but for a restaurant to refuse her service, I have to believe that she is cheap. You just don't turn away clients in this economy unless serving them would be worse for your business than the refusal...

I have never waitressed (honestly, I don't think I could handle it) but I have a couple good friends who have, and they have often told stories of horrible tippers. I have NEVER not tipped well, even with iffy service. I usually tip 20%, but I have tipped less for poor service (and it has to be POOR for me to tip less) and I have tipped much more for great service (like when DSS threw up at the Outback and the waitress boxed our uneaten meals for us and helped our quick exit- she got a HUGE tip). IMHO tipping is a part of the cost of dining out. If you don't want to tip, don't go out. Waitresses bust their butts and make very little hourly, those tips are their pay.

Goodness...Winston-Salem is getting the business on the Dis lately. First, they don't want teens in the Mall.....now this.;) What's next WS????

I hate restaurants that require a min. tip, so I won't eat at those establishment. Having been a waitress I know how hard that job can be, but that's no excuse for an expectation of an 18% tip. I always over tip, but I won't be told before I even order how much. That is based solely on the service.

She must have been a huge pain for them to resort to this. I know a person who complains about anything and everything when she goes out to eat. I hate going out to eat with her because it is embarrassing. Maybe this customer is more trouble than she is worth.

I'm amazed at the posters that tip for POOR service. I tip zero, zilch for poor service.

I never leave NOTHING because I don't want them to think I forgot- if I didn't get good service I leave a crappy tip. BUT it has to be pretty bad... everyone can have an off night and I try to think of that.

I live in the Winston-Salem area and I love Kanpai:lovestruc

If she received poor service I could understand her not tipping. Apparently she enjoyed eating there or she would not have returned so I support the restaurant on this one:thumbsup2

I am really understanding at restaurants. I almost always leave a decent tip unless its just awful. If they are turning away business she must be a real piece of work. If it was just a case of poor tipping for bad service why would she continue to come back. If I get really bad service - I still leave a tip but I might give them one more chance and then I would stop going back. I wouldn't keep going back and leave really bad tips.

Ahahahahaa!! Kanpai is the dregs of "Japanese" food. I refuse to eat there ever again because the food is disgusting. Now another reason!

Agreed!

It was mentioned in the clip that the chef doesn't want to deal with her again so there's more to this story than bad tipping.

Yeah, I'm wondering what the repercussions are going to be for the restaurant. I'm sure that there are going to be people who will refuse to go there just out of spite or out of principle.

I would love to know how much she did tip. What did she think was an adequate tip? 5%, 10%?

If the service was poor then the tip will reflect that, but having been a waitress myself I am very forgiving knowing that it may be busy or that they may just be having an off night. There is only one time we didn't tip and the waitress was horrible and shockingly rude. She even ran to her manager to complain about us because we told her the fries where cold and requested fresh ones. How dare us!!!:rotfl:

If I get horrible service, I tip 1 cent. Next time, leave the penny. It sends a better message than leaving nothing. The server knows that you were disgusted. If you leave nothing, they wonder if you are cheap or just forgot...

There are seriously people out there who think a buck or two is a tip. Period. Their bill is $10? here is a dollar or two tip. Their bill is $100- same thing. People are outrageous. I know I wasn't the perfect waitress all the time, I made mistakes, or got behind, and I understand a tip variable according to my service. But some people are just plain CHEAP, and when you combine that with being rude/demanding/bossy/controlling/picky or whathaveyou, I can see why the restaurant would just ban her.

I generally am not a fan. Although right now in Vancouver they have auto gratuities at a lot of the restaurants and I'm okay with it. They are dealing with a lot of foreigners who simply don't tip and they didn't want their staff making less money during a really busy time. The waitress we had was awesome, they blocked out the tipping portion on the bill and let us know it was already included.

Another restaurant didn't add the auto gratuities and were in the news because they had some people come take up hours of the waitresses time, order hundreds of dollars in drings, tipped nothing, then complained the next day about the sales tax lol.

I've done that too. The last time I did it was when I didn't get some of my food, toast with my breakfast. And I asked for it around five times. I couldn't eat some of the food, I'm allergic to egg whites and dip the yolk so a huge portion of my breakfast was useless without the toast, basically I paid like $8 for three slices of bacon.

Agreed!

That's what I'm betting. Some customers will run you off your feet while buying or ordering very little. Then if they don't tip either they are just wasting everyone's time. Sounds like she not only complained to the wait staff but the cooks too. Very few businesses kick before they've tried to resolve it, some customers can't be pleased and some are just looking for freebies and complain until they get them.

My grandfather used to just tip a couple of bucks, regardless of how much the tab was. He was never rude, or demanding or bossy. It was just the era he was from. He seriously thought it was a good tip. I would always slip some onto the table or directly to the waitress when he was out of sight. I didn't want to insult him and I always felt bad for the waitresses getting such a small tip.

I'm sure thought that this is not the case with this woman.

I saw a clip of that too. It really made me wonder. Maybe the woman was a pain. I don't know. But she was articulate, stuck to the facts, and had 2 dining companions. I don't know if it was the same two companions on both occasions where she was told the 18% tip was mandatory. There was no real mention of the dining companions which was weird. It would be interesting to hear their thoughts. If she was so bad, why wouldn't they just refuse to serve her, period? It's weird that she is the only customer that has this restriction.

I understand she wanted the establishment to have fair practices. But I wouldn't want to go to a restaurant where I wasn't wanted. I'd wonder about repercussions and the food.
