Just got off the phone with DVC guide, who has been unfailingly gracious as we inch closer to purchase. Does the $75 or so fee apply when using any other DVC property other than your home resort? Is there anything -- no matter how obscure -- that you folks wish you'd asked before purchasing that came as a surprise later? Is there anything in the DVC official website that would be helpful in our final decision making process that I can legitimately access? I don't want to do anything sneaky, but it is a significant purchase, and any help y'all can pass along to us to make the final decision any smoother would be MOST welcome!!

The $75 does not apply to disney properties. Only exception is the cruise. The only question I would ask is why didn't I do this sooner?

There is nothing on the members only site that you haven't seen or heard here. The DVC discounts of 10-20% at selected resturuants is about the only thing I could think of that may even possibly be of interest.

That site is less then useful....its only saving grace is the .pdf files of the VACATION MAGIC quarterly news leter. It often appears there before it shows up in my mailbox.

I couldn't really as "why didn't we do this sooner", we bought in '92 and have had many friends and family members buy in since. Never had eny regrets at all.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs", Karl Marx,This has failed every time it has been tried, why do we still have liberals?

The DVC "Members Only" website contains copies of publications which are publically available. There are currently no secrets there. The intent is to have a site where private information may be viewed, like account status and hopefully the ability to make reservations online from our accounts.
The mystique created by a "private" site right now serves only to pique interest in some and earn outright disdain by others- since there is nothing there now which can't be obtained from DVC directly, if you ask.
You can call your guide and request a copy of the Public Offering Statement- which details the entire program- this information is available on the site. You can also request a copy of the Member Guidelines.
Enjoy!

You folks have been oh-so-gracious. This helps! BTW, have I "arrived" since I got a reply from Rich? ;)

I, too, wish I had joined sooner, especially when I think of all the money I spent for nights in the hotels. Yikes! (I could have purchased and paid off many points by now.) I love not having to chase down a discounted room! What a relief that is! :)

Can't think of a single thing that "came as a surprise" later. Unless you want to count pleasant surprises like getting a discount at a store or restaurant that you didn't know about. If you stay within the 5 DVC resorts, your only "payment" will be whatever the per night point charge is. As you're probably aware, the only difference in a home resort is the 11 month booking window vs 7 month. Maintenance fees are also different by resort. You will pay these fees based on your home resort, regardless of what resort you use your points at.

Once you go outside the 5 DVC resorts, additional fees may apply.

Yes, it's a significant purchase. I purchased in 1993, and am currently going through my 2nd add-on purchase. Many others have done the same. That alone tells a lot.....We keep coming back for more.
