We've never asked since we usually do AM EMH...just wondering; what time does the flag family take place?

Would be nice to be able to participate...assume it's a hot ticket.;)

I've read that you need to inquire when checking in?

Can anyone explain the process, including approx. how long to allot?

When you check in ask the CM if there are any flag family openings during your stay. If so, you will be signed up for the chosen day, if not, you can be placed on stand-by. On the morning you are chosen, you will meet Ranger Stan at the desk around 8:00am if I recall correctly. Stan will give your family the flags and you will ride the elevator to the top floor and then climb some stairs to the roof. Once you raise all the flags, Ranger Stan will be glad to take some family photos of you. You will be free to enjoy a few minutes on the roof with Stan or return down to the lobby for your certificate. At the least, I would plan 45 minutes. We did it a few years ago and it is worth every second to listen to Ranger Stan. He is an Icon.

It is defiantly a hot ticket. When we did it back in 2001 (has it been that long?) we asked about it when we checked in and the first day available was the second last of our 7-day vacation, this was in Jan when it was dead. I don't remember the exact time but I seem to think it was around 7:30 give or take.

You meet in the lobby where you take the elevator up to concierge and then take a series of stairs up to the first level of the roof and then finally up to the higher roof that has the flagpoles. Our guide gave us as much time as we wanted to look around and take pics before we raised the American followed by the pledge of allegiance. Next I believe was the Florida state flag followed by a Disney flag and the two Wilderness Lodge flags. The whole process took about a half hour and gave us plenty of time to get back down to the bus stop and get to the park we were going to at or close to opening. If you can do it I highly recommend it. Enjoy.

I document the flag raising in my Jan 2002 trip report that is linked in my signature.

I heard the flag family was cancelled.

NOT true! We were there this past week, inquired at check-in on June 5, and were told every day was booked through today. We could have hung around in the lobby to see if the flag family was a no-show at 8 AM each day, but decided to get the jump on EMH each morning instead. We did see Ranger Stan but he was busy and I didn't want to interrupt.

:cool1: will give it a try, sounds so cool...almost surprised they don't label it a tour & charge for it lol.

Do you want to learn a true meaning of Flag Family? Here is an excerpt from an article I had published in our local newspaper a few years ago:

"....Our adventure included a stay at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. The facility is remarkable in every aspect and the staff went beyond expectations to meet our needs. One particular staff member is well-known as Ranger Stan. Ranger Stan is an icon around the Lodge and I had read about him as I searched the internet for details on the Lodge. He stands proud in his ranger attire and beams with the kind of joy that would make Walt Disney himself proud. While I don’t know his age, I would presume that Ranger Stan is a retired gentlemen who is living his second childhood through his work at the Lodge. He is undoubtedly the most knowledgeable source of any information regarding the Lodge. Through my vacation planning I discovered that families staying at the Wilderness Lodge could request to be the “flag family” for the day. Although not advertised, this privilege is still sought by many. If selected, your family will receive a notice to meet Ranger Stan at the front desk early on your selected morning to begin your adventure. I had a basic idea what may occur but didn’t yet have the appreciation.

My wife, daughter, and I met Ranger Stan early Thursday morning. He immediately connected with my daughter and asked her if she would accept the privilege of carrying the American Flag on our journey. She beamed with delight at the honor and he placed her small hands around the Flag and she held it tight. He then handed the other flags to my wife and I and we began the journey to the top of the Lodge. After an elevator ride and a climb of 66 steps, (Ranger Stan provided the detail), we were on top of the Lodge, beholding the lands of Disney. The view was awesome but it wasn’t our mission. Ranger Stan guided my daughter to the center flagpole and kindly instructed her on how they would work together to raise the colors. He told her the American Flag was in the center because it deserved respect from the other flags and all those who viewed it. My daughter joyfully assisted him in preparing the colors and pulling the rope to raise them for the day. It was then that it occurred to me this was more than simply a gimmick. As we watched the wind unfurl the Flag over the kingdom, I’ll admit, I swelled with pride at what I had just observed. Ranger Stan then asked us to line up and face the Flag. I was expecting a photo-op but he asked my daughter to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. She proudly started and he snapped to a salute as we pledged our allegiance. My six year old had just received a valuable lesson in flag respect that too many children and adults have not. In the simple minutes of our adventure with Ranger Stan, she had learned how to carry, honor, and care for the colors. I’m sure she has heard some of this taught in school or hopefully even from me. However, the memories and pictures with Ranger Stan will undoubtedly be the lasting lesson for her.

How many others need the privilege of a few minutes with Ranger Stan? Simply attend a local ballgame and you will find your answer. As we visited for the next few minutes and completed our tasks of raising the other flags, I was able to appreciate the additional knowledge and kind demeanor of Ranger Stan. Later in the day, while swimming in the pool my daughter pointed to the Lodge roof and said, “ Look Daddy, my Flag is still flying!” Yes sweetheart, your Flag flies proudly! While there may be some things about the Disney Corporation that Mr. Disney may not be proud of today, I’m sure old Walt would be thankful for the work of a ranger named Stan.....I sure am."

Now I hope you have a greater understanding of Flag Family!

i'd assume your local ballgames are popular then, for Ranger Stan's sake anyway

Ok then. If I didn't know any better I would say I'm pregnant and my harmones are going crazy. I got all choked up and emotional after reading
Goofy-Blades post. Mayby I shouldn't even ask in December to be Flag family. I can see it now me like a bloberring idiot and my husband looking at me like I was crazy.:lmao: .

ahhhhhhhhhh shucks.........thanks! :) You'll be able to do it and realize nothing was exaggerated in the story! It is very special and Ranger Stan's days of doing it are numbered due to his knee problems....so go for it!

That was a great tribute. Wish it had been posted yesterday, being Flag Day June 14th. Maybe next year!

I'm crying now, thanks!:rotfl:

That was wonderful. I'm a teacher and every year I discuss with my 4th graders the importance of the flag, its significance, and why we say the pledge. They come in sick of it, over used and not understood! I will be trying to do this with DDs if I have to carry them up the 66 stairs (that many, really???) I will photo document and share it with my class for years to come. Maybe then it will impact my DDs, My DH, and me, but also, all the students I am able to teach over the next 20 years!:goodvibes
Thank you for sharing this!

Thank you...........we need more teachers who put emphasis on the pledge and respect.

Then again, as I tell my teacher friends, "your failures are my successes...." - I work in federal law enforcement! :rotfl2:

:rotfl: :rotfl: I'm sorry. I can't stop. . . Great line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I try as hard as I can to instill respect across the board. I see a downfall of respect in our adults now, and I feel if it is allowed to continue it will only worsen. We teach American History in 4th grade, so it is a great time to discuss why we treat people, and certain icons as we do. . . :goodvibes

OP: sorry I temporarily hijacked your thread!
