Wk Of Sept 29 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Monte -- Congratulations!!! You FINISHED!!!!! How awesome!! You will really be rocking by January, so don't worry yourself at all! The pride of crossing the finish line is worth more than any piece of medal or plastic. Don't worry -- in January you'll get some bling seriously worth having!!! Oh, and I have heard that moleskin is very effective, though I have not yet used it. After January's race, I had terrible blisters that covered the balls of my feet and went up between the toes, spreading them apart. I had never experienced that before, but am certainly going to be glad to hear the advice here on preventative measures for this year's race.

Judy - No trip to the ER...Either a PR or the ER...One might think one reason you do these races is just to meet cute paramedics. :lmao: Out of all the reasons to do races, I have to admit that this one did not cross my mind. ;)

Bill, this had me :lmao: and believe me, right now that is NOT good! But, I was also thinking last week when Judy said "PR or the ER" that if she didn't PR I'd tell her I was sure it was because she jsut wanted to check out whether the medical guys there were as cute as at WDW!!!

Thank you, everyone, for your good WISHes on my back situation. Well, I really thought it was muscular, but the doctor said it is actually the upper ribs on the right side of my spine, and the muscular stuff is secondary. The ribs somehow got out of whack and are un-aligned causing this severe pain. The stress of that caused inflammation of the muscles on both sides of my spine. He did a chiropractic adjustment and is going to see if it "held" on Friday and if not, we'll figure out what steps to take to determine why this has happened all the sudden. I woke up in pain Friday and it has gotten progressively worse. He was not happy to hear about the miles Saturday, because even though I told him I mostly walked, rather than jogged, he said that fast walking and swinging the arms would have exacerbated the rib issue. Oh, okay. Hadn't thought of that. No "walking" or running right now. I am allowed to use the recumbent stationary bike, though. I am using voltaren, an anti-inflammatory, and did not use the valium I was supposed to take at bedtime last night. Just couldn't risk being groggy this morning. Maybe tonight, if I can get to sleep early enough.

Thanks for all of the compliments on the pictures (and me in the pictures)! :goodvibes

Yesterday was fit ball - and it focused on arms and core. My abs and lower back are feeling it today! My lower back definitely needs some strengthening so obviously I hit those muscles yesterday. Afterwards we got in a quick jog of 1.45 miles. Tonight I'm meeting up with the Calgary Roadrunners for the first time ever. I'm really loving this group running stuff, and I'm looking forward to meeting more runners in this town. Plus one of the girls that I met through my other run group - she and I are talking about meeting up on Thursdays over lunch to get a run in together. I really thought I was more of a loner runner out there, but now I really like the company.

Cam - It sounds like you could use some Injinji toe socks. I love these things!

Laurie - Congrats on the pace for the 3 miler!!

Monte - You're kidding?! You guys have snow already?! It's still in the 80's here. I guess I can't complain too much though, later this winter I'll be outside running and then you guys will be snowed in!!

Leana - those are some awesome looking socks. I'm gonna have to check them out myself.

Thanks everyone so much for the well wishes and pixie dust. I really tried to talk myself out of running today, but just couldn't find a good enough reason to skip the run. I still have this cold, but it's still above my shoulders, and I bailed on one of my runs last week, so I can't afford it this week. So I sucked it up and ran my 8 miles anyway, took me about an hour 15, about an 9:20 mpm. As long as I keep a throat lozenge with me I am not too bad. I have a 4 miler tomorrow and then a rest day before my 16 miler on Friday. Here's hoping I get rid of this cold before then!!

Thanks for all the support guys...you're the best! I spoke w/ a co-worker who hikes alot and she recommended "Mole Skin?" to wear while walking. Has anyone tried that and how did it work for you. Someone else suggested putting Vaseline on my feet prior to walking. I'm going to email the TNT trainer and see what they say. Thanks again guys I can't wait to meet everyone in Jan.:goodvibes ....guess what I woke up to???I hate to use a four letter word.....SNOW:headache: lol We have close to two inches so far...and so it begins.

Mole Skin is good to put on blisters. I have done it a couple of times in the long past and it helped tremendously.

We will trade you our rain for your snow if you want. ;) The past week has made me wonder if I should buy a boat just in case.

Bill

:headache: Bad news:sad2: Dr Wasan did not concur with Drs Craig and Kristi. In fact, he nearly fell off his chair when I told him I walked 24 miles last week. He told me no more than one mile per day and explained the precarious position the wire is in right now. He said too much agitation could cause the scar tissue to never secure.:scared1: :scared1: :scared1: At this I was both scared and angry. I said "you both told me I could walk as much as was comfortable" (meaning him and the Medtronic's rep who does my programming). I actually did not have to have this apt. Imagine if I didn't push to see him with more questions. I could have screwed up my wire totally innocently. Now I'm afraid to move.

Speaking of poundage... imagine still having a marathoner's appetite and NOT MOVING.:headache: :headache: I am becoming more Pooh like everyday; and it's not nearly as cute on me!

I'm still working out the kinks of trying to be there for Marathon weekend. Looks like I better buy a Scream Team shirt:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

No worries. I'm good with this. I just wish they would have taken me seriously when I told them REPEATEDLY, "I'm an endurance athlete". A mile a day... sheesh!

Sunny

Sunny! Here is some more :grouphug: for you! Does that mean you can walk after you heal? DUDE! It makes me angry...Sorry, I choose to be angry...when Drs do not really "hear" you!

Oh, Sunny, I'm so sorry to hear that! :sad1:

Any chance that it's just a temporary restriction until things get all healed up?

To help cheer up Sunny and Monte and Cam and everyone else feeling a little puny today, here is your "YARC" joke from your resident Goofy.pirate:

Creation
>
>On the first day, God created the dog and said: "Sit all day by the door
>of
>your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will
>give you a life span of twenty years."
>
>The dog said: "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years
>and I'll give you back the other ten?"
>
>So God agreed.
>
>
>On the second day, God created the monkey and said: "Entertain people, do
>tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life
>span."
>
>The monkey said: "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long
>time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?"
>
>And God agreed.
>
>
>On the third day, God created the cow and said: "You must go into the
>field
>with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give
>milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life
>span
>of sixty years."
>
>The cow said: "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty
>years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"
>
>And God agreed again.
>
>
>On the fourth day, God created man and said: "Eat, sleep, play, marry and
>enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years."
>
>But man said: "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty,
>the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the
>dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"
>
>"Okay," said God, "You asked for it."
>
>
>
>So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy
>ourselves.
>For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family.
>For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.
>And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
>
>Life has now been explained to you.... Now go forth.

I hope everyone feels better, don't make me come back here and be Goofy again!:rolleyes1

Dave -- very funny!!

Sunny -- I am sorry the doctor scared you, but I am soooo glad that you are the kind of patient that asks questions, so that you did not go forward unaware of the risks of mega-miles. I hope you will take it easy now, and personally, I am just thrilled to know that you will be at WDW as part of the scream team! I'll be out there with you on Saturday for sure!

Sunny

So happy you are good with this. I know it must be a huge disappointment for you and I totally understand your frustration with your doctor.

I have been having some knee issues the last month and I have seem a orthopaedist (I knew more than he did, he was pretty useless, gave me the generic ITBand diagnosis and sent me home). Then I saw my GP hoping for a referral to a physio to get some strengthening advice, perhaps find some muscle imbalance issues, but his response was, "How old are you? He glanced at my chart and said "oooh, 42, you know you are wearing out your body...blah, blah, blah":sad2: . Again, got the "rest, ice, etc....talk", but I want to know what caused this. I told him I was not willing to accept the fact that I needed to slow down on my activity level, he responded, "you should be sticking with 5K's".

I have since made an appointment with a great chiropractor. She found I had a fixed sacroiliac joint. I have been going for adjustments on my hip for my SI joint and acpuncture on my tight quads and ITBand. I will decide on Friday if I will run MCM, but at least I have a plan of action looking forward....and you do too!

Oh, Colleen, I am sorry you have been having pain and problems too, sweetie! Geez, what is with these doctors thinking that just because we are a certain age chronologically it should dictate how effectively we treat real problems that prevent us from being as active and fit as want to be? I am so glad you found a great chiropractor. I hope you are feeling strong by Friday. Sending you a  and some pixiedust: !

only time for a quick drive-by today:

Did 6 miles this afternoon at a 9:48 pace. I felt great, and I am so happy to be getting back to the pace I was running at before my half in April.

To all those battling injuries and not feeling so well.....:wizard: Hope you are all feeling better soon!

Oh Sunny! You really are handling this all amazingly well. Does this mean when the scar tissue heals and keeps the wire(s) in place, you can do more activity? In any case, you do that 1 mile every day, ok?

And if you are really crazy - you can sign up to work the #2 water stop during the Full with me & a bunch of other WISHers at 3am! :rotfl:

Sunny I am so sorry that you were told "only 1 mile per day" pixiedust:

Monte you will get your bling come Jan. You done great girl. Don't fret the time of your marathon. You finished while in pain from a blister! You are one tough cookie!

Cam and everybody else who is ailing I hope you all get better quickly!

Did a really good 12 miler earlier today, and I didn't lose anything either:lmao:

Erica:)

Some days you just have to go WHEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

http://partipoodle.homestead.com/files/doghumor/humorphotos/wolffun.jpg

Yes Erica did very well today. We had a super walk with perfect temperture and great company.

We both got so zoned in the walk that we tripped over cracks in the sidewalks at different times.:upsidedow

Great walking music on the iPod: Radar Love, Tainted Love, Addicted to love, Lots of Queen, lots of Shiawa Twain.:goodvibes

Does anyone else like 'Dancing with the Stars' besides Erica and I?

Have an awesome evening team.:grouphug:

Dave:hippie:

Colleen - Hope the injury gets better quick. I really can't stand when Dr.'s think just because they don't exercise like we do, we're the crazy ones. My foot doc thinks I should give up distance events because they're too far and overtax the body as I get older. Puh-leaze!

Cam - glad they figured out the problem. Now I hope they can determine what caused it. Feel better.

Leana
- I like the look of those socks. May have to get a pair and try them out.

Sunny - I admire your positive attitude, even after all you've been through. I really hope everything works out for you. :wizard:

I know my head's been kinda foggy with my cold and all, but did I really see someone post that Queen Judy was trying for a PR in the ER? :confused3 :scared1:
Or am I being badly influenced by WWDave, our resident YARC Goofy?:rolleyes1

Terri -- you were close. Judy had a 5k this weekend and went into it with the very positive attitude of "PR or the ER"!!! Fortunately, she PR'ed it in a really big way!! :woohoo: I was beginning to wonder whether it was Judy's quest to check out the hotness factor of rescue workers at the end of races in various states! :rotfl2:
