Wk of May 21--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Krista and Kevin - yep, I'm going Goofy again. Got my confirmation postcard in the mail yesterday. :)

Minnie and Sunny - :wizard: :wizard: Hope you two are feeling better.

Judy - Happy belated birthday and hope you're feeling better, too!

Howard - looking good in those photos! :thumbsup2

CAm - Thanks! I really wanted to quit several times during the marathon. But I wanted those medals more :teeth: Since my time was 8 minutes over the marathon limit, I didn't get the Mickey or Goofy certificates (only got the Donald). So I gotta do Goofy this year to get the certificates. The things we'll do for paper or metal

Dana - Before this year's Goofy, my longest training run was 13 miles. I probably wasn't really prepared for a full marathon, but I really wanted those medals. I talked my way through the last part of the race.
As far as walk/run ratios, I always have a problem with them on my training runs. I find that I'm constantly looking at my watch to see when I should switch from the walk to the run and vice versa. It became very distracting. So now I run until I feel really winded, then I walk. When my breathing returns to normal, I run again. So far it seems to work for me.

Lynne - Congrats on the 1/2 IM. Bummer about the 8 seconds :sad2:
Your report brought back memories. I did that race in 2004. It was my 1st EVER triathlon (nothing like starting out big  ). Unfortunately, I DNF'd. Those rolling hills did me in (who knew there were hills in Florida
:confused3 ). I dropped out on those hills. I had major cramps in my calves.
They said I probably over-hydrated and didn't have enough salt in my system.
I loved that race, though, and want to try it again. Hope to be better prepared the next time.

Are you taking Levaquin or any of it's relatives (Cipro, Tequin, anything thats generic name ends in floxacin?) for the pneumonia? There's a fairly rare side effect in that class of drugs that leads to tendon rupture. If you're on or have taken one of those to treat your pneumonia, you'll need to rest (NO workouts!) until you get that elbow looked at.

Darn! I just reread your reply and you said I should have it looked at. The problem is I can't get to my dr. I like my dr quite well, but she's hidden behind this massive machinery called Lahey Clinic.

RANT MODE ON.
When I called a week ago Friday to say I hade a really high fever, passed out and couldn't walk across the room... NO ONE CALLED ME BACK. I had to go to the ER. Then, 5 days later when I called (calling means going through a 3 layer menu and leaving voice mail and then sitting by your phone for 1-3 hours waiting for a return call). After I left three voice mails, 4 hours later I finally got a response and they told me they called in my cough syrup. Guess what? They didn't.

I'm still so mad I can't bring myself to call that stupid office again. I don't fault the people, its the system.

So why do I stay? For one, almost every dr I've had since I was 20 yo has been sucked up by Lahey Clinic. 2) I'm not sure there's any better practice ccovered by my HMO :furious: :furious: :furious:

And I'm really mad at myself for just taking it. If this had happened to one of my kids when they were sick I would be in someone's face (or a whole lot of someones) but when it happens to me I just sulk and be bitter. :confused3

So I really hope I don't have to call that office and leave my DOB, PCP, reason for callling, phone to be reached at and then feel like I don't dare go to the bathroom for the next 4 hours.

OK, RANT MODE OFF.

Sorry, you're the only one's that had to endure that. So to whom do I pay my copay to for this session ;)

Terri

Terri, I didn't realize you were robbed of your medals for 8 lousy minutes. I'm so sorry to hear that. But its really amazing you were able to complete Goofy with a max. LR of 13 miles. Imagine what you'll do this year!!!!!

Well you "greatly trumped" my first tri, I DNS for mine. Hey, everyone needs at least one DNS, one DNF and one DLF attached to their name, right?

Sunny

It's midnight and I'm still up. I swear I need a mother to discipline me. In fact, one day when my DD was complaining of the lack of food in the house and the lack of real dinners while I've been working mega hours, I responded, "ya, we need a mother" :rotfl2:

Sunny,

I got the medals at the finish line :) . But when they sent out the finisher certificates, I only got the Donald Duck one for finishing the half. No Mickey or Goofy :guilty:

I want the certificates, too! So I'll be back at it again in 07!

Terri

Colleen - I think I am going to have the same hammer toe problems. My 2nd toe on each foot "curls" a bit. They hurt for days after the Minnie 15k. I didn't loose ay toenails though!

MelR - love your pics! :lmao:

Rhonda - have you seen an ENT doc? Or just your primary? I had (and am still having) problems with my ears. Every now & then I get what I call a dizzy spell. I almost pass out, as this happens, my left ear blocks. Then when I get to the point where I am think this is it, I am passing out - my ear opens and I get better. Weird. Anyway, for a whole year, my primary just kept telling me to take my Allegra D. I finally convinced them to do tests & let me see an EMT. First thing the awesome EMT doc said was that the Allegra was not going to help this problem!

Also, I did hear about those shoes - we did the story here at work yesterday. I was wondering how long it would be before yuo guys were talking about them, and buying them!

Sunny - feel better & take it easy!
I agree with your rant about doctors. And don't even get me started on the world-renowned Lahey Clinic! :furious:

Terri - You will do it this year!

Cam - I would have seen you in CA anyway. Chad was already registered for the 1/2. I didn't register earlier since I wanted to see how I did at the Minnie. Once we got back, DL was already closed for some time. I just figured since I was going to be there, I should see if I could get in through a charity or something. And I was already signed up for the 5k - so I guess I am doing both!

I am having a slight panic attack. Now that I signed up for the DL under a charity, I have to raise money! I hate asking for donations for anything. Ugh!

I did do my 3 mile DVD yesterday. I am going to try to fit in something today before Chad heads to work and I am on solo toddler-duty.

Sunny - I hate the Dr system too! It is Carolina Medical System here! :furious: Hope you feel better...If you don't slow down I will need to get my Evil Queenness over to you and It won't be pretty! Hey you are going Goofy aren't you?

Melissa - Quick question! Are you going Goofy this year? Love the pics! :rotfl:

I have thought about the girls weekend. That is a great idea. I need to see if my sis wants to run too. She is always up to getting away from her kids. :lmao: Now I just have to get DH to buy into it...no pun intended! If it works, I will need to figure out if I will do Goofy or not. I like walking around with the Goofy around my neck! :teeth:

Michael - Welcome and congrats on such a great job on WW. Wishing you continued success and stick around - we can always use a new member of our group.

Thanks for the welcome and the encouragement! I needed it today. I'm actually taking a day off from the track, but I'm not happy about it. :sad1: The extra distance combined with pushing myself a little too hard has brought back some knee problems. Nothing too major, really just some pain right where my patella connects with the inner part of my kneecap. It's more like a high shin splint. Anyway, a little rest, some ice, and some quad exercises today, and I'll be back tomorrow to try and improve my 4 mile time (I have a 4 mile race in a couple of weeks).

And thanks for all the encouragement for my WW success. It's been really great and I feel so much better minus 33 pounds. To reach my goal, I need to lose about 20 more, WHICH I KNOW I CAN DO!!! The walking/jogging has really helped to take it off!

Anyway, thanks to everyone for your encouragement and support. I love this place! And to all of you with recent "issues" to deal with, remember, if it don't kill you, it makes you stronger! :thumbsup2

Michael

Kristi - Way to go on gettign in the game again!!

MelR - You crack me up!!!!

Sunny - Please take care of that elbow! Your doc's system stinks, but it sounds like you could do big damage. I believe Mel said NO workouts. Time to walk the walk. ;) :goodvibes Just afraid something might happen to you and Lynne would be the only one left here in MelR's league. ;) (Although, I must say I'm very roud of you fro actually walking some of your 5k)

Mel - You may not spend quite as much time here, but you get us going every week! I can't believe it's been a year since your first race! I remember that well! You are right up ther ewith Cam for hero-ness!

Rhonda - There have been such nasty, head-plugging things going around. Mine was not that bad, but still driving me loopy!!! :wizard: That you feel better soon! I'm considering that Illuminations Dessert evet, but it depends on if I get an Illuminations Cruise.

Terri - 07 is your year to get it all!!!

Girls weekend sounds so fun, but no way would dh let me go to WDW without him. (Maybe for Minnie wekend, but htat's even pushing it)

Feeling myself fo rthe first time in a long time. Have 30 minutes tonight and then nothing until race time. On the birght side, after the first 2.5 miles, it's all down hill from there! :teeth:

Michael.....hope your knee feels better!!! Definitely wise to rest it today. I'm sure you'll be back in no time. And a belated congrats on signing up for the Half!!! :cheer2:

Rhonda....Pixie Dust for the ear problem :(. :wizard:

Sunny!!!! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! As for the pain in the butt....TMI ALERT have you tried massaging your butt by rolling on a tennis ball or something like that? They even make a special "rolling ball" that is designed just for that purpose. When my lower back, butt or sciatica acts up, which it does at times, I usually try this b/c my glutes get VERY tight and cause pressure from lower back on down. You basically just put all your weight on the ball and roll on it. LOL...sounds funny, but it does work. And it DOES hurt...but you should feel the muscle begin to release. Here's a link to one company that sells them Massage Ball

So I've been invited by some friends to run an 8 miler around a lake tomorrow. I am really not ready to run 8, my LR this weekend was supposed to be 7 miles. So my thoughts are that I can switch my LR to tomorrow....run 7....then cool-down with a final 1 mile walk! They are all fast...although they told me that they were going to "take it slow and run 10 minute miles". LOL! :rotfl2: :rotfl: . Sure guys....yeah...that's slow for me NOT!!!!! So while I may start with them....I'm sure by mile 4 they'll move ahead! If I do my LR on Friday, then I can do a gentle run on Sunday instead which works out better b/c we will be doing the big family wedding weekend...which means I'll probably have some wine LOL! Long Runs and Wine aren't generally the best combo!!!

Hello everybody!! :wave2: Guess what, I ran 2 miles last night and NO pain!! :yay: :yay: I did 2r/2w again--running at 11:32 and walking at 13:38, pretty slow, but I'm not taking any chances this time. I walked a half mile before I ran the 2, I was planning on walking a half mile after I ran, to make it 3 miles, but American Idol came on. A girl has to have her priorities! :teeth:

Melissa--You are so funny!!! I love the new look. So pretty! :p

Kristi--YAY!! You are doing DL 1/2!! That's awesome. I really wish we could run that, but I ran out of vacation days. How did your dr. appt go?

Sunny--Good job slowing down for the 5k! :woohoo: And :wizard: on the whole HMO frustrations, what a headache.

Christa, Colleen, and Melissa--You girls definitely need to do a princess: weekend for the marathon! We need you there!!!

Christa--How is Bree doing? When is she due?

Carrie and Jodi-- :wizard: for your races this weekend!! I need to start looking for some 5k's and 10k's to run--it's that time of year!

Mel--Awesome post!

Kristi – congrats on singing up with the charity for the DL ½. I did the WDW full in January with the Leukemia and Lymphoma society and was absolutely petrified of the fund raising but with a lot of perseverance I actually blew by my goal and ended up raising over $5,300. Good luck!

Howard – Congrats on the marathon! Now rest and start getting ready for WDW. See you there.

Sunny – you need to stop, smell the flowers and take care of your health – NOW – before you think of anything else. I know how hard this is to do but if you don’t you are only going to delay healing. Sending PD your way.

Akasleepingbeauty – thanks for the well wishes. I have actually continued running throughout the entire ordeal and this has helped. The pain is always there but is much worse when I have to lift my arms – the docs response to that (a rim shot here) “Don’t do that then.” Have you tried Gingko for the ear? I have a slight hearing loss – too many loud concerts in the 70’s – and now have tinnitus all the time but the Gingko (recommended by my ENT) has really helped reduce it. Just a thought.

Dana – God luck on the house it looks fabulous!

Minnie – is the chest tube out yet? I have had to remove hundreds of those and every patient has stated how much more comfortable they were after the tube was out. Sending PD that you feel better soon.

Lynne – awesome job on the tri!

Terri – congratulations on going for the Goofy. I am nervous but the more I train and the more I talk about the more excited I am getting. I actually do not question my ability to finish it justquestion how long it is going to take me.

Michael – having taken off 50 pounds 17 years ago (wow, it has been that long) and kept it off with exercise and a reasonable diet I can relate and support your efforts. Stay active and ask for support at every turn, we are all here for you. Congratulations and great effort. Take care of that knee.

Now for my training: somebody has to hit me on the head. I keep going out for a nice relaxed run and ending up running a race. Last night I went out with the running club hoping to get in 5 or 6 miles at an easy pace and ended up doing 6.2 – a full 10K – in 46:50. Now that is a bit off my last 10k race – 44:10 – but still way too fast for a nice easy training run. The good thing is that I felt really strong throughout the entire run. Today is a weights only day so the legs can rest. Have an awesome day everyone.

Christa - I'm not going Goofy this year if I sign up. I know we are going to CA in november so I'm hoping to go to dis. in Jan, but I want to use more days to play and less to race.

Christa, you are thinking about doing Goofy again?? And Sunny and Terri are already signed up...oohhh, the peer pressure is killing me! I really want to do both too :teeth: gotta work on DH...MelR, OK, we will let you do the Full, as long as you are coming! :thumbsup2

I better decide soon because the Goofy is over 70% full. Check this out from the Disney site.

As of now, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge registration has reached 70% of capacity. Once the 3,000 spots have been filled, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge will be closed. We will communicate that registration has reached capacity through updates on www.disneyworldmarathon.com . After the "registration has reached capacity" message has been posted on the website, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge will no longer be accepting registrations. Even if you register for both races after the spots are filled, you will not be considered a part of Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge and will not receive a Goofy Medal.

Carrie, you are so lucky your DH loves Disney too! I was trying to convince DH to run Disney too, but he is just not interested.

Terri, you did receive your goofy and mickey medals, but not certificates, correct?

Sunny, I have piriformis pain too. I really have to stretch and stretch (easier said than done). That with my ITB are still giving me problems.

Mel, Love your motivational post. Your hardware looks great! :cheer2:

Amy, listen you you. 7-8 miles. That is so awesome! In a few months that will be a stroll in the park...you will be saying "I only have a 7 mile run today".

Minnie, I hope you are feeling better. I am thinking about you.

Krista, that is so great you don't have any pain. :bounce: I am hoping with my orthotics I will get to that stage.

Off for some speed work.

How did your dr. appt go?

Thanks for asking! As well as I expected, I suppose.

I got a 10 min. lecture about how exercise does not help you lose weight, only maintain. That you must take in less calories, blah, blah, blah.  He knows I have been doing WW for 1-2 years now. I am at the lowest pts. per day they allow. He then mentioned that meal replacements/liquid diets work really well. Huh??? At the end he kind of said in passing that if he suspected something, like a thyroid issue, he would test me for it. HELLO?! You have been my primary for over 10 years and I am hypothyroid!!! So, I said something to the effect of, "I actually am hypo..." So, he is re-checking that, along with sugar and cholesterol (because I asked for those again - they were off last spring).

Another thing: as I was leaving I asked him if I should be fasting for these tests (he didn't mention it, and I knew I had to for a blood sugar). He said no first, then said it wouldn't hurt and I might as well.

Long story short - we'll see what happens when the results come in.

Kristi - I have always nbeen told at least 10, but preferabley 12-hour fast for those tests. Not overly impressed with your doc. Do you have a friend with one that actually pays attention that you could try?

If you're on ww's lowest points and exercising, there is somethign wrong. I cannot believe anyone would recommend a liquid diet that does not seem healthy to me! :wizard:

Carrie - I know, I totally agree. I had been lazy about changing doctors. it's just such a huge ordeal since I have a few chronic conditions, specialists, etc. But, I did finally make an appt. for a physical with a new doctor - but that appt. is not until July. Hopefully, he will be better. The new doc's wife is our son's pediatrician and I cannot explain how good she is & how much we love her! I wish we could just go to her. So, I am hoping her hubby is half as good.

Thanks MelR for the photos! That really brightened my day! I can always count on my WISH friends to bring me out of a funk. I am so overwhelmed with work right now, and it keeps piling on. Today I have the tough  job of playing in the firm's golf tournament with clients. This will be a great way to spend the day, but it just means more work that is not getting done. I am continuing to do well on WW and am cheat free. I have lost 3 pounds since Monday. I am going to pack some snacks to eat at the golf course so that I won't be tempted by the chips and candy bars that the snack cart has to offer. I finally feel like I have some control again. It is a great feeling. :goodvibes

Hi WISH team!

I have my computer back and have started physical therapy for my hip pain. Only walking for me at this point. I am training for Chicago Distance classic currently. I am keeping things really slow so that I don't irritate the hip. Aiming for 17-19 min miles until physical therapy says that I can speed it up a bit. CDC only requires an 18 min/pace so I am not to worried.

Too many posts to go back and read this week, but now that I have a computer again, hopefully I will be able to keep up again.

Oh! I bought a stroller conversion kit for my bike trailer so that I can take my kids when I am walking! So no more excuses. He He! Now I will be held accountable by all of you!

Maggie :surfweb:
