Wk of May 21--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Good morning all! :sunny: Today is a much better day! :thumbsup2 I could tell I was feeling better because on the way to work I thought "Hey! I'm singing!", which I have not been able to do since I got bronchitis. Nothing like belting out a couple of good Blake Shelton tunes on the way to work! I'm so happy to be feeling human again!

I have a question for all my professional walker WISH buddies......Monday I am doing a 4.3K "Fitness Walk". Well, they can call it what they want but for me it's a practice run for January. Anyway, 4.3K is only 2.67 miles, and I have been doing 3 miles @ 1% five days a week on the TM. I trained this morning, I plan on training tomorrow and Saturday morning but taking Sunday as a rest day. I really didn't think I needed to taper for this minuscule event. Right? Plus I am drinking drinking drinking so I am fully hydrated. What else should I do? Or not do? I know this might be ridiculous for such a tiny event but remember I am practicing for the "big time". :rolleyes1

Sunny, Carrie, Amy - Thank you for all your kind words and good advice. :goodvibes I am feeling much better thanks to better living thru pharmaceuticals. The antibiotics are really doing their thing!

Cam - You are so incredibly inspiring. :dumbo: I can honestly say with all my heart that I would not be training and doing local events and planning on "the Big One" in January if it wasn't for you. Thank you so much. Really.

Christa - You will always be The Evil Queen to me. :teeth: I wouldn't even dream of taking your title! I am soooo sad you aren't coming to WDW. DH and I are staying at POR and you can stay with us if that will help. I mean it!

Colleen - I too have hammer toes on each feet. And lovely bunions. My feet do NOT see sunshine. :sad2: No, no, waaaay too ugly. I had surgery on my left foot twice. Once for the bunion and once for the hammer toe. It's only a matter of time before the right one is ready. The surgery wasn't bad, it was the walking around in the surgical shoe for weeks afterwards that was a pain. But I'm so glad I did it! But hopefully the orthodics will work for you. I had them made but I can not stand them. So I don't use them. BTW these funky feet of mine were self-inflicted. Too many years of 3" stiletto heels eight hours a day.

Kristi - Whoo hoo! :cheer2: DL! Way to go! I too am not overly impressed with your doctor.

Howard - OMG those stats! Wow! :faint: Now even I'm impressed with what I'm doing! And no blushing about the comment...it's true! :teeth:

Sunny - Oh I'm glad you're feeling better. And I REALLY REALLY appreciate your "pep talk". You are so inspiring and I admire you so much. Plus I learn so much from you. Thank you very much for being there when I really needed it. :goodvibes Wait. I just read Mel's posts - You've only been doing this one year!?!?! That's AMAZING!!! :worship: You are my Poster Child for inspiration! Oh Sunny, that really stinks about your doctor. There's got to be a better way.

Monte
- Uhhh, they have chat rooms here? Guess I should look around the Dis more...

Mel - OMG! :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao:

Amy - I'd like to see a demo of that butt ball rolling please. :rolleyes1 :lmao:

Maggie - Yay! :wave2: There you are!

Judy, I've only been racing for one year, but I've been a gym rat for years. :)

Kristi-- I can totally relate to the switchig drs ordeal. If I go to my HMO website and look for new doctors, dozens and dozens come up, but they really are all part of just a few practices. Once you sign on with a practice you pretty much have to see who ever is available. The last four times I've seen my doctor she muses over my chart a minute and say, "wow, you've lost a lot of weight recently!". She clearly doesn't remember anything from one visit ot the next.

Personally, I find it very scarey. In my line of work, you obsess over a problem, walk away from it and let it germinate and then the answers come. They have no time to obsess, walk away and return. Its a 2 minute look at the chart and on the fly answers.

Speaking of which, I made the dreaded call. I'm sitting here with an over-filled bladder waiting for the darn phone to ring...

Christa, you are thinking about doing Goofy again?? And Sunny and Terri are already signed up...oohhh, the peer pressure is killing me! I really want to do both too :teeth: gotta work on DH...MelR, OK, we will let you do the Full, as long as you are coming! :thumbsup2

I better decide soon because the Goofy is over 70% full. Check this out from the Disney site.

As of now, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge registration has reached 70% of capacity. Once the 3,000 spots have been filled, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge will be closed. We will communicate that registration has reached capacity through updates on www.disneyworldmarathon.com . After the "registration has reached capacity" message has been posted on the website, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge will no longer be accepting registrations. Even if you register for both races after the spots are filled, you will not be considered a part of Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge and will not receive a Goofy Medal.
Colleen

Thanks for the info! Last year we didnot sign up until July. :scared1: But that may not work this year! I don't know if I want to go Goofy or try to beat my 4:25 Charlotte Marathon PR. I want to get 4:15! I don't know! WDW is an easier course than Charlotte so I think I could do it. Maybe!
My sis wants to do the Marathon to! AHHHHHH! What should I do?
Heck, I don't even know if I am going! :sad2:

Thanks for asking! As well as I expected, I suppose.

I got a 10 min. lecture about how exercise does not help you lose weight, only maintain. That you must take in less calories, blah, blah, blah.  He knows I have been doing WW for 1-2 years now. I am at the lowest pts. per day they allow. He then mentioned that meal replacements/liquid diets work really well. Huh??? At the end he kind of said in passing that if he suspected something, like a thyroid issue, he would test me for it. HELLO?! You have been my primary for over 10 years and I am hypothyroid!!! So, I said something to the effect of, "I actually am hypo..." So, he is re-checking that, along with sugar and cholesterol (because I asked for those again - they were off last spring).

Another thing: as I was leaving I asked him if I should be fasting for these tests (he didn't mention it, and I knew I had to for a blood sugar). He said no first, then said it wouldn't hurt and I might as well.

Long story short - we'll see what happens when the results come in.
Beware: RANTING AND MISSPELLED WORDS INVOLVED!
Kristi - I am not trying to sound mean, but your Dr. sounds like an idiot! OUT OF CONTROL! You are so AWESOME! He needs to respect what you have been doing and give you some credit! YOu have worked so hard..liquid diet! :furious: WW is not easy and takes hard work! Girl! Evil Queen has your back! :cheer2:
OK OFF RANT!

Hey Carrie thanks for setting this up, and to Sunny and everyone else involved for finishing the shirts. I was out of town for a couple of days, so I couldn't get back to you. However, no worries from me about setting this up at all. I basically said I would do the shirts just to get the ball rolling. Once that ball was rolling though it just took off, which is great. I'm glad people will get their shirts in time for the DL Half.

Sunny!!!! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! As for the pain in the butt....TMI ALERT have you tried massaging your butt by rolling on a tennis ball or something like that? They even make a special "rolling ball" that is designed just for that purpose. When my lower back, butt or sciatica acts up, which it does at times, I usually try this b/c my glutes get VERY tight and cause pressure from lower back on down. You basically just put all your weight on the ball and roll on it. LOL...sounds funny, but it does work. And it DOES hurt...but you should feel the muscle begin to release. Here's a link to one company that sells them Massage Ball

!

Thanks, Amy! I've heard of the tennis ball rolling thing and forgot about it. I'll give it a try.

My copy just arrived and I was wondering if anyone knew what the medals were the 2 guys were wearing? The photo is from 2005, I know this because I checked their site and confirmed it was those 2 but I didn't think they gave out medals but then again THEY do win the races so perhaps is the medal to the winners?

No great news here. My racing partner, Susan, has been given 6 more weeks of P.T. for her foot. We both had DNF for a 8K this past Sunday. Her because of her foot (can't for a ride back LOL) and me because there was no way I was going to freeze by myself especially as I was deadlast! Nasty wind. No rain ths week so we did...

Saturday 4 miles
Sunday was the DNF
Monday 3.5 miles with the dog
Tuesday about 1.5 because the dog looked ready to sit down and not budge!
Wednesday 3..5 miles
Thursday 3 miles and just completed 35 minutes on the ellipitcal.

I'm getting there, i need my long days again but with my partner out of comission it's not been happening. DH has said he'll do them with me so we'll see if I can get him out this weekend. Our long days are just about distances but I've wanted to start running more on them so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that weather, DH and legs permitting I'll get them in this weekend :)

Happy training too all!!!! *toasting you all with my gatoraide* :teeth:

OH!!!! Susan and I have signed up to volunteer at the start of the 5K so I'm not sure what we'll be doing, set up or getting people where they need to be but we're extremely excited! I'm so glad that we'll be able to be able to cheer and be there for those doing the 5K like those that are there when we do the 1/2. We've talked with the lady dealing with the volunteer sign up because we have a friend doing the 5K and we need to be at the finish for her and you'll probably hear us as we scream HAPPY BIRTHDAY to her as she finishs. It's a milestone b-day ;) She'd probably kill me if I said what but let's put it this way her and DL are celebrating something together ;) We CAN'T wait for September!!!!! Nervous about the course, OF COURSE! But oh what a weekend awaits us all!!!!!! :goodvibes

:cheer2: Go WISH Go!!!

HI everyone. I was out of commission for the last week being deathly ill... or you can call it the flu. I wasn't sick all winter and then now that the weather turns nice.... BLAM! My chest has been so congested this week that even walking up the steps is hard. I am hoping that by the weekend I can go for a little run.

I made contact with my local running group and they yanked me in. I was going to start this week, but now am waiting until next Thursday to do my first run with them. I am soooooo nervous!!!! LAst night on my way home from work there was a guy running on the side of the road. I noticed he was wearing one of the running groups shirts and it got me all excited! I wanted to hollor out the window at him, but then I remember how much I HATE those idiots that yell at me.

OH, and I made it official by signing up for WDW 1/2... it's official, you will all see me there now. HOOOO YAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! If any lime green shirts pass me, I'll be a holloring at ya to slow down and say "HI!!"

I have to take some time and back read all the posts. Happy Running everyone!!!!

Judy – Happy Belated Birthday! :bday: Glad you are feeling better. Good Luck on your first event this weekend! You’ll do GREAT!

Amy & Carrie - :thanks: for the prayers & pixie dust for my friends DD. All things considered she is doing really well. She came home from the hospital a couple of days ago and is on the road to recovery.

Amy – So far, the only race that I know for sure that I am doing is the local (Jackson) 5k on Sept. 2. I am considering looking into doing some others, 5k’s, maybe a 10k. Not sure if I will be ready for a half marathon before doing WDW’s Half. I am still pretty slow. :snail: :teeth: Congratulations on signing up for the WDW’s Full!

Cam – I will not be doing the Spring Lake 5, but depending on how busy the weekend is looking, I will try & get there to cheer you on. I have been wanting to watch a race before participating in one. It would great going to one where there are Wisher’s in it to cheer for. I wish you and Howard lots of luck for a fun race. :cheer2:

Michael – :welcome:

Scott – Congratulations on your PB 5k!

Jodi – Good Luck on your 10k this weekend! :cheer2:

GoofyGuy – So sorry you had to go through such a health scare, but very glad everything turned out ok

Dave – Congratulations on your 10k. Great job! Congratulations on taking the plunge & signing up for the WDW Marathon. :cool1:

Monte – Good Luck on your 10k this weekend! :cheer2:

Heather – Congratulations on your Beach to Bay Relay. I can’t imagine running 4 miles in the sand. Way to go!!!! :cool1:

Howard – Congratulations on your first marathon! Great job! I loved seeing the photos. Thanks to Cam for posting them. :woohoo:

MelR – I’m sending you positive thoughts….you can do it! And I agree with Dave, just remember DNF greatly trumps DNS. Your pictures were too funny. :lmao:

Sara – Hey, whatever works to keep you motivated, and I think you can’t get much more help in motivation then Marines. :rotfl2:

Carrie – Good Luck on your 6-miler on Saturday! Sounds like an interesting race. :cheer2:

Krista – Glad to hear you were able to run without knee pain. :thumbsup2

Kevin – It’s great that you won’t have to do any traveling for a while so that you have more time for training.

Dana – Hope everyone in your family is feeling better. Loved the pictures of your new house. It looks great!

Minnie – So very sorry about your accident & collapsed lung. Sending you pixie dust that you are feeling better soon. pixiedust:

Lynne – Congratulations on your race! I loved reading your report. :cool1:

Kristi – Sorry your dr. wasn’t much help. Good decision on switching docs. Congratulations on signing up for the DL Half! :thumbsup2

Sunny – Congratulations on your 5k. Pixie dust that your tendonitis is feeling better. Sorry you aren’t feeling well again. Pixie dust that you recover quickly. pixiedust: Please take it easy.

Rhonda – Pixie dust that hearing is getting better. pixiedust:

Maggie – Pixie dust for the hip pain. pixiedust:

Jen – Congratulations on signing up for the WDW Half

Thank you to everyone that has been so encouraging. Reading how you started out and how far you have come, really has been such a huge inspiration to me. You are all my hero’s!!!!

As for me…..Last Saturday DH (John) & I walked the 5 miles around the reservoir & then I did an additional walk of 2 more miles at a faster pace. It felt good to walk 7 miles, even if it was really slow. On Sunday DH & I with a couple of friends again walked the 5 miles around the reservoir. The rest of the week we were back at the High School track. Tonight I borrowed DS’s Ipod. My walking pace seemed faster without really trying, so I guess the music helped. Ended up walking 3 miles in just under 43min. Mile 1 was 14:41, mile 2 was 14:25, & mile 3 was 13:48. I need to work on doing more running. It takes me longer then I would like to recover after I do any running.

Hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day Weekend!

Hi there - Sunny you read my mind. I was sitting in the bath the other day looking at my feet, as you do, and I thought 'hey, all my toenails are here and pink and flat' and then I realised it's because I'm a big fat wussy wimp who's only running once a week at the moment. Still, it all changes June 4th when DL training begins. I'm quite looking forward to being a runner again - although I was supposed to have lost about 6kg by now via lots of intervals at the gym, I started well but only managed 200g last fortnight. Oops!! Still by that rate I'll be another kilo lighter by DL (that's 8 seconds quicker right).

Now I did have other things to say, but completely lost the plot after page 8. But Christa and everyone else who can't make it for 2007 -I'm already heading up the 2008 team, you can join that one! Ah, well time to start my night shift now, thankfully it's only one phone call long. Helen

AAAAARGH
We've had cold and rainy weather for 10 days in a row now and it doesn't look like it will be any better for the JPMCCC next Thursday :furious:
I don't mind running in the rain, but with 62,390 runners we'll have to stand in the starting grid for at least an hour and that sucks :scared1:
We'll probably have to use huge trashbags as a protection against the rain: 3 holes cut in the bottom and you can pull it over your running gear. Before crossing the start line you can then simply tear it off and stuff it into the next trash can :p

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

OK, I was playing catchup at work after being away for my meeting in Portland, ME. I wasn't able to exercise at all when I was in Maine. So I had 3 rest days after my 10K on Sunday. I figure that's OK anyway for my legs. I did 50 min on the elliptical yesterday, and it said 5.38 miles. IK don't really believe that, but the exercise felt good and it was great to have no impact on the shins and legs.

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend everyone. This weekend happens to be my and DW's wedding anniversary. We got married on the Sunday before Memorial Day 11 years ago. My SIL, aka the Cool Aunt, is coming out from Cleveland to watch the princesses princess: princess:, and DW and I are going to take an overnight trip to Niagara Falls. I have a room in a nice hotel and 2 tickets to the new Cirque Niagara show that just opened there. We're both really looking forward to some couple time for just us. It's been a while.

OK, to catch up on some posts:

Jodi- How are you feeling for your 10K? Are you tapering? Good luck this weekend, I can't wait to hear about it.

Minnie- I have to agree with everyone else. Your doctor leaves alot to be desired. :sad2: Isn't it unfortunate though that this is not all that unusual for our medical system?

Christa- You just gotta be there for the marathon. Sure, bring your sister, bring your princesses princess: princess: and just have a girls weekend. I know you can run the Charlotte marathon, but there are very few chances for our TEAM to all be in the same place. I hope your at WDW!

Judy- :wizard: :wizard: for you getting over your bronchitis. Good luck with your race this weekend.

Sunny- you take care of yourself too. Here's some :wizard: :wizard: for getting over your illness as well. Your doctor also sounded like he was full of it...

Diane- sounds like you had a great week of training. :thumbsup2 No worries about the DNF, it greatly trumps the DNS! Hey, so did you ever think of running with your Pal Mickey for the WDW Marathon? It might be fun to have him jiggleing while you're running the race.

Jen- WHOO HOOOO!!!! :cool1: WTG on signing up for the WDW half! :thumbsup2 Have fun with the group run next Thursday. I was nervous about running with the group too, but they have been soooo supportive to my running. :wizard: :wizard: on you getting over your flu bug.

Karen- 7 miles, great!!! Your pace on the track sounds really good too. I hear you about taking a while to recover from the running. I think this is when I really start to realize I'm not 20something anymore.

Eric- Uuugh, yes, I don't envy you having to stand in the rain with 60,000+ other runners. Good luck. I'll be thinking of you as I'm running my JPMCCC here in Rochester.

First things first:

Dave - Happy Anniversary this weekend!

Judy - Good Luck in your race!

Jen - Glad you got signed up for the 1/2! I took the plunge earlier this week, so I guess we're committed! Or at least, we should be committed!

Howard - I'm a little late, but WTG on your marathon! That is very impressive. I think maybe after we do this for a while we forget that a very small percentage of people could run/walk/crawl some of the distances we do, so be proud!!!

Well, I'm back at it today after resting my knees yesterday. They feel much better this morning, with just a little pain. I'm about to walk out the door and do at least 4 miles at the track. My goal is 52:30 today so I can try to get under 52:00 for my 4 miler in 2 weeks. When I get back I'll give you a report (good, bad, or ugly :teeth: )

Everyone have a great day, and a safe weekend!

Hi Dave :wave2: ,

This morning - I'm feeling pretty good, this week I only averaged 3 miles as far as training goes....mostly because I had done something to my foot at my PT session on Saturday but I feel like I can run a good one.

After the 10k, I like you, might just stick to crosstraining for a little bit and then dig back in. I want to try and get my feet/ankles checked out....one seems a little bit weaker than the other and I really don't want to get injured :goodvibes .

Getting a little nervous about the 10k though....this time around I'm bringing my MP3 - last time I didn't and when the faster runners started to pass me up, well, I guess you could say I focused on it a little bit more.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes on the race - you guys are the best!

Everyone have a great Memorial Day weekend! Hey, is anyone else like me and stuck at work today? Seems like a lot people have off in my area  .

jodi - Good luck this weekend!

Dave - Happy anniversary!

solo - Thought you were gonna' be here more often? ;) Hope you not sick or suffering from an eternal migraine! :wizard:

Karen - Glad to hear your friend's dd is home and recovering well! Keep us posted!

Helen - Good to see you!! DId you have a faling out with your running friends? WHat's up with teh 1 run a week? ;)

Michael - Hope your knees handled it ok today!!!

Viking - :wizard: that the weather improves!

Jen - That sounds awful! There's been a lot of crud going around like that. Glad you're doing better now!

Diane - Tell Susan I hope she's doing better soon! :wizard: I hope so, so that you get your partner back soon! Sure you don't want to meet us on teh bridge Saturday? ;) ;) ;)

monte - I can't guarantee I can make it, but I'd try to make a chat if we scheduled one! That would be fun!!

DH and I did 30 min last night. Trying to hydrate today. Been better the last week, but horrible for about the last 6 weeks! Won't be back for updates until Sunday or Monday, though.

I think dh is more worried than I am about the race. I have to pick up Olive Garden on the way home so that we can scarf it down before we head out of town. He missed teh 6 and 7-milers, though and has not done more than 4 in probably 2 months. I'm sure he'll be fine, though. Thanks for sending us luck!

For all you nice toenail people, mine were fine all through training. Got a blister under my second toe after teh marathon. About 2 months later the nail fell off, didn't turn black or anything first. It's still pretty lumpy an dbumpy, though. :( I guess taht just makes me a real athelete, huh? :D

Hi, everyone! I really, really wanted to respond to everyone, but it is going to be a crazy day at work and I need to get to it.

I did want to thank everyone who said so many nice things about me. I keep thinking "boy, are they easily impressed!" :teeth: I really do love you guys. You keep me going for sure.

Dave -- Happy anniversary! Am soo glad your kids have a "cool aunt" so you can get away!

karen -- awesome job on doing those distances!

Good luck to everyone who has events this weekend -- Judy, Jodi, Carrie, Monte . . . I will be thinking of all of you and can't wait to get back to read your race reports.

I am hoping I will actually have something good to report after the Spring Lake 5 tomorrow. I have done nothing in more than a week just due to schedule and exhaustion, and quite frankly, I had hoped my sheer laziness would at least result in improvement in my hamstring/hip. Of course, if I'd been doing all the things I should have been doing -- anti-inflammatories every day 2x, cool baths, stretching multiple times per day -- I am sure I would have seen improvement. But I didn't even make time to do that. I'll certainly suffer for it tomorrow, but I'll be thrilled to finish.

Karen -- If you make it to the race, I hope to be coming over the finish line around 1:15:00 - 1:20:00 at the latest -- the mob scene will probably delay my start 2-3 minutes. UGH! I'll be wearing long black pants and an aqua shirt with white trim. I'd LOVE to see you if you can make it.

Have a great weekend, everyone! We'll be back late tomorrow night and will "talk" with all of you soon.
