Wk of Mar 25--WISH Walking/Running Club

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and PD for my knee. :goodvibes Nothing like a good nights sleep, a gorgeous sunny spring day and some bad news to put everything in perspective. I got a call from a friend of mine last night to tell me someone we both knew from school had a stroke this past weekend and he is paralyzed on his right side. So sad and scary. :guilty: There but for the Grace of God.... Suddenly my knee problem doesn't look like such a big deal anymore. So, I know what I have to do, and I'll do it and that will be that. (Be secretly I'm still praying it's just pulled and not torn off, please please please!)

This morning I did an hour on the TM @ 3.8 @ 1%. I backed down on the speed just a bit. I wish I had time to do it outside today, it's sooo nice out!

BTW today was the first time I wore my new compression shorts. Ohh I love them! :cloud9:

Krista - I like the way you think! ;) Although, to tell you the truth, if I never had to see Dr HHBL again, it would be OK with me. Sorry about the inserts being a pain but I guess it makes sense if they are realigning everything.

jeanneg - Oh I knew I liked you! :upsidedow There is actually a picture of him on the internet but NO WAY does it do him justice.

Kristi- Oh thank you. I need both my knees to jump around like a lunatic at the Kenny concert Cam and I are going to in June! :yay:

Stephanie - Thank you. :goodvibes I know there are other races, but, well I ran the Half with a torn meniscus when Dr HHBL told me not to. It didn't hurt, and still doesn't when I train. Yeah, I know, I'm a stubborn old fool, but I NEED to do this!

Martha - I'm with you on that calling thing. :thumbsup2 that's why they make repairmen! We've tried several DIY projects since we bought our house two years ago, and I've come to the conclusion....it's just not our thing. We'll write the checks. That we are good at!

Craig - I love that story! I think it's wonderful. :goodvibes Hard to swallow for you, I'm sure, but it is a wonderful and tender moment. Thanks for sharing. And hey, congratulations on the post card!

Carrie - Oh no! Oh I hope it's just a temporary twinge. :wizard: YAY! Shirts! I wish I could help you. This part must be very time consuming for you.

Jackie - OMG! That's a scary story! Whew. Did any good looking firemen show up? ;)

Minnie - Thank you. :goodvibes Oh I'm glad you went and had a great time. Say, are you riding again? I was thinking of taking lessons before we started working with Mist.

Paul - Thank you for your concern. I hear what you're saying and I know you are right. But, this is my first Minnie. (Insert whining stomping feet smilie here!)

Susie - Good to see you! Stop that with the not worthy stuff! You ARE worthy! And we miss you!

Melissa - Gosh the things you do! How exciting!

MikeOptimator - "Don't stink too much!" :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Steve and Dave - Thanks but I don't think I could stand it going to the Minnie and not participating. :guilty: I'll have this discussion with the surgeon but I'm pretty sure if the ACL is off, then I can't do much more damage to it. And if I promise to have the surgery as soon as I get back, I should be done with PT and braces in time to start training seriously for the Half. :thumbsup2

Monica - YAY for the TM only costing $45.00! TM repairs must be much cheaper than plumbers! :rotfl2:

Vic - You know, delicate would be just about one of the last words I would use for you. :rotfl: I got the impression you were the strong, manly type.

Sunny - Thinking of you today and hoping its a better day for you.:flower3:

Alright, let me pretend like I care about my job.... :surfweb:

Krista said:
You can't be delicate! You're the SHERIFF !!!!

Carrie said:
Vic - rotfl!! FOrgive me, but delicate is not a word I think of when I think of Big Vic.

I don't do any of that sheriff'in stuff. Twenty-five years on active duty was enough fun and games for me. Nowdays I sit in an office and manage my herd of 911 operators/dispatchers. I don't know if I'm delicate, or nuts! ;) :rotfl:

Carrie - Oh no! Oh I hope it's just a temporary twinge. :wizard: YAY! Shirts! I wish I could help you. This part must be very time consuming for you.
That's ok Judy. Scott is a wonderful helper! I'll keep praying that it's torn too.

Vic - you hang with us. I'm afraid you may be crazy! :rotfl:

He all.... DD is still sick. I am at work, hustling to get some things done. We are also short staffed. DD is here with me, DH brought her in for a couple of hours. She is quietly watching her movie and resting.

I managed a 30 minute bike ride before it got too dark. Tonight I will attempt a short run before dinner. Speaking of dinner... last night was a crock of chili that cooked all day and tasted very fine for dinner!! Tonight DH is in charge. I think he is firing up the grill for brats!!!

OK, have tons to do. I will try to catch up later.

Here I sit waiting for the repairman. He arrived at 11:30 and we chatted. I thought Great! I'll be at work after lunch (oh wait, that's not great) and I'll get my speed work in outside. 20 minutes later I look out and he's gone and my phone still isn't working. Huh. Well, I've eaten some lunch and I'm back to waiting.

Carrie: oo, oo, shirts are in! Woo hoo can't wait to get mine! Thanks so much for doing this!!

Judy: take care of that knee!

Disnutt: sorry you had to use the TM but I hope you accomplished your goal for today!

Bahamamomma1: yes, you can do this. And Welcome!

Monica: yippee on the TM being fixed! No more excuses now....

Cecilia: I hope you get the iPod charging. I was helping my Dad set up his. He said he had installed all the software. Turns out he hadn't so I had to do that. Then not all his USB ports worked so we had to hunt around to find one that did. What should have taken 15 minutes took an hour and a half!

Leana: snow? Yuck!! I know you are happy you got your run in yesterday!

Calcio: she may be able to outrun you, but you are still my studmuffin!

Oh, it looks like the repairman is back. Hmmmm, let's see what he says. Probably went to lunch.

Have a great day everyone!

  Hooray, my treadmill is fixed and the repairman only charged $45. to repair it :cool1: :cool1: I'm back in the walking w/out obstacles (like snow).lol

I'm really glad for you! I know I couldn't train w/o my treadmill! Today I was going to go out to walk, as it looks really nice, but it's pretty windy (what's that expression kickin' chickin?) so I did my 4 miles on the treadmill.

I feel that my training has really been hard lately, I'm wondering if I'm fighting something off. I really had to push today to do 4 miles, but I was bound & determined to do it, as I haven't went past 4 miles in a week & a half. I keep making excuses (I really feel bad, I need to stop @ 3) or something keeps coming up (LTO). I'm happy I broke through the 4 mile wall, for today!

Mel, your race report was neat! What a race! Thanks for sharing.

For everybody with injuries/health problems, I hope you feel better! :)

Mmmm brats, how Wisconsin-esque of you. I love 'em though.

OMG! You guys are eating small spoiled children???

Hello Everyone,

Ran 6.2 mi for my LR yesterday and felt pretty good. I'm not feeling very sore today so that makes me encouraged.

Lily/Steve/Carrie Thanks for the advice about cold soaks. I'm thinking that I'll wait a while to start since I haven't been too sore yet. Also, I think they'll be a lot easier to deal with when I'm running in 80 degree weather and not the 40's like I was yesterday.

Carrie: I hope your rough run was just due to the raking and weeding. I'm envious that you found the time to get out in the yard. I used to garden a lot BC (before children).

Krista: Great going with all the meal planning. Good luck with the new inserts.

Leana: Glad you had a great run. Sorry for the snow.

Judy: So sorry for the knee problems. Hope it's not as bad as you think.

Sunny: I hope you are feeling better soon.

GoofyGuy: Great mile times. It's so good of you to coach. 88 kids in the program, that's terrific.

MelR: I'm amazed at your fortitude. You are just CRAZY and I say that with all respect.

Optimator: Good luck with your 18 miler. I am impressed with you managing to get your runs in during the kids' activities.

Monte: I'm glad the TM repairs were such a bargain.

Dave: Sorry to hear about your bum pain. Do you do chiropractic? It helps me a lot. Are you at the UofR? I went there once upon a time and used to cut through Mt. Hope Cemetary to get to a really good wing place. I had to transfer after my Freshman year because it was WAY too expensive for me.

Hoosmi: Great pace on your 10K especially with such little training the past month. Snakes and alligators would have encouraged my pace as well.

Red Dragon: Such tragic news about your former neighbor. It's a small world, a woman in my book club was friends with that family.

Laurie: Great pace on your LR. When you are chosing your next piece of essential equipment you could get the Garmin 305 which has both GPS and HRM. The $50 Garmin rebate is good until May.

Kristi: I saw the GGD on Sesame Street yesterday singing to Elmo, have you seen that episode (the letter Y and # 14)?

Steve: Nice job on your race. Just think of how great your training will be with Krista cooking all those healthy meals.

Cecilia: Nice job on your race.

Angie: Sorry about your tough run, as long as you can learn from it, it's not a wasted effort. Good luck with your work trip.

Matt: I've never paid much attention to my breathing before, but when I was on my LR yesterday I tried and it just really messed me up. I hope you find what works for you.

Jen117: Hope DD is better soon. Good for you on trying to improve your nutrition. My HS coach used to say "Garbage in equals garbage out."

Time to get back to work.

Best wishes to all that I've missed.

Cindy

Dave - Oh yes, when you live in Wisconsin there are some things you just have to eat. The local meat market make some pretty awesome ones!!! Oh that and Cheese. I won't give up my cheese!!!!

Judy - Too Funny! :lmao: No they aren't my children!!!

HRM are a great tool for training, I really want to get one, but I think my first investment may be a Garmin, then maybe a HRM! Gotta pick and choose what I buy for this so called "free sport"

Laurie - I'm with Cindy, if you want a Garmin and a HRM then look into the 305. The difference is less than $60 depending on who you buy it from. I purchased my 205 through Amazon and got free shipping, plus at the time they had the best price. The price dropped a couple bucks a few days later and I even got the price reduction. You have to purchase your Garmin before May 15 to get the rebate.

I've not used or read MfM, but many of the group swear by and have had great success with Bingham's book and plan. If he ramps it up a bit quicker I suspect he qualifies it with a talk about how much stress the training program puts on your body, and that building slowly allows your body to adjust to the stress and not break down. In contrast, too-fast on the build up is sure to put a runner on the injured reserve.

This is especially true in those early days of a program. When you make the commitment and start from nearly zero, be especially careful and listen to your body. I do think Bingham ramps up his program assuming some base level of activity, with this base making sure your body is ready for the additional stress it will face.

You are right, 10% is the rule of thumb, but if Bingham prescribes a bit more once your ready I suspect he's had enough feedback from others to feel comfortable with that.

Vic

Toe better, still quite beautiful, but better. Today after work I'll do the outdoor run with only a little protection on it. Sadly I do this pretty much all the time, perhaps once a year I crack a toe on something. This even goes way back to my childhood, when after many stitches and one surgery my father decreed I was to wear shoes every moment of my waking life.

60+ degrees outside right now. I can't wait to get out there in an hour.

Best to all

Craig

Toe better, still quite beautiful, but better.
FInally! Craig joined the ugly toe club!!! :p Glad it's feeling better, though, Craig! HAve fun out there!

First a training update: It was absolutely gorgeous out today!!!! I couldn't wait to get done with work so I could head to the park for my 4.5 mile run. Isn't that such a great feeling. I finished in 43:28 with an average pace of 9:37 per mile. I realized today that I need to bring all four bottles on my amphipod even on a 4.5 mile run when the weather is warm. Today it was almost 80 degrees and I went through 2 bottles really quick. So, now I will bring all 4 bottles when the weather is warm.

Ok, now on to catch up with everyone!

Mel--If I saw a gator or snake on one of my runs, I may have a heart attack and pass out!!! :rotfl2:

Angie--Hope you have fun on your trip!! Sounds like fun!

Martha--uggggh...telephone repair men!!! I think it is ridiculous that they can't give you a smaller window of time, do they think nobody has anything better to do then sit home for 12 hours and wait for them to come!!!!!!!

goofyguy1958---woah!! great pace on those mile repeats! I am sure you are having a blast coaching the kids!!!

Stephanie--that's awesome that you found a group to train with, sounds like fun!

Craig--Love the story about you and Lesley!!

Carrie--sorry about the stonker workout. Can't wait to get the shirts, I am so excited!!!

Leana--great to hear you were able to get a run in before the snow. Please, Please, Please don't send that snow our way! I am enjoying our warmer temps! :rolleyes1

Minnie---so jealous you got to spend a day in WDW...hope you enjoy the rest of your trip! Say HI!! to Mickey for me!

Paul--yikes..seems like a lot of people are having plumbing problems lately....I think I should change careers!!

Bahamamama--you can definetely do it, just find an appropriate plan for yourself and go for it!! And welcome to the boards!!!

Melissa--sounds like an awesome race!! Although, I don't think I could ever do something like that, but it sounds really cool!!

Mike--sounds like a full week of workouts ahead for you! Good luck with all of those!

Dave--Hockey game went great, my team won 4-0, so we finish in third place in our league!!! Since I am the goalie, I love getting a shutout!!
Glad to hear you are resting a bit this week.

Cindy and Leana--thanks for the info on the Garmin.....hmmm that's tempting, I really want one of those gadgets!!

I know i missed some people..SORRY!! Time to go eat dinner!!

Disnut - I LOVE YOUR "AVATAR"!!!! That is one of my favorite shows. I was a little dissappointed w/ the season ender though. I thought Zuko would make a better decision!! That is so nerdy that a 37yo would like a cartoon so much, but I admit it, i do. I'm also quite the spongebob fan.

Melissa, I bet I'm a bigger cartoon nerd than you are. :upsidedow I'm soooo disappointed in Zuko! Uncle Irho rocks and Zuko should heed his wisdom! :teacher: I'm a SpongeBob fan, too. He's from the Water Tribe!:boat:

Hey everyone...wow this board is busy these days! I don't have time to catch up with everyone right now because I'm at work and yes, it's Wednesday here for me! Anyway, quick training report. Monday was my rest day and then Tues I did 3 miles on the treadmill thanks to a torrential downpour. I always seem to start off slow but the last mile and a half or so I was going strong. I think I averaged around a 9:00 pace. Today I have a 5 miler...hoping the weather holds out so I can run at the park after work. I'll catch up with you all later tonight!

Carrie, Thank you!

Susie – Dad is doing great – actually a lot better than any of us thought he would do. Thank you for asking and remembering. DW is still recovering from the accident and will probably just do the 5K with DD, but we are definitely going to be there. The coaching is absolutely a win – win.

Mike thanks for the nice words –“I'm sure the kids are lucky to have you.” Really, I am luckily they like having me coach.

Bill, it is good speed work but 3 times a week is always too much speed work.

Dave, if you get a chance to coach a kid’s team, do it. It really is a lot of fun for me and I wish I had done it a long time ago.

Vic, yep, it really is cool.

Cindy, 88 kids ranging in age from 9 to 14 – both boys and girls – and all kinds of range in speed and endurance. Three best runners – distance, that is - are a 10-year-old who is trying to go sub 6 in the mile this year, a 12-year-old girl with the same goal and a 14-year-old who just wants to get faster (I think he can go sub 5 for the mile by the end of the year).

Laurie, those fast times will not be every practice but will be at most of them. Yes, I am having a blast. It really helps me get rid of the crap from work everyday.

Sorry if I missed anyone. PD:wizard: and hugs :grouphug: to all in need.

Well, I got out at lunch today and was able to get in a nice 5.3 miles but, thanks to those darn kids, I was moving a bit too fast with a 42:20 (7:59 pace). Tomorrow we will be doing an Indian run – like a pace line in bike races but running - for 12 minutes strait with all 3 groups so I will be moving slower then.

Great training all!

Mike “GG” B

Mel - That's sop cool! We're W.I.S.H Racing team! :D Thanks so much for doing that!
