Wk of July 8--WISH Walking/Running Club

Happy but tardy birthday to my preferred pharmacist and engineer, Mel and Carrie. :wizard:

Dana, be sure to look at the calendar. The full is 6 months from tomorrow. Taking it easy now isn't a crime, you have so much time to build. It's easy to get all excited and push your training in anticipation of a good result, but remember to balance you training and health.

Plus you're exactly where I am now on your long runs, and if you get too fit you'll blow my doors off on January 13, and I don't think my fragile male ego could cope with that. pirate:

And hello Sara.

Best to all

Craig

Craig- I'm west of Pueblo in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains/Wet Mountains, so I'm southwest of where you are by quite a bit. Although we did drive through Boulder last weekend on our way to Rocky Mountain National Park!

Renee- Facing traffic is what I thought, thanks!

Maggie- it's great to hear from you again!

I did 6 miles today in 81 minutes. Splits:
Mile 1: 13:51
Mile 2: 13:01
Mile 3: 13:00
Mile 4: 12:42 (I think that mile was short!)
Mile 5: 13:41
Mile 6: 14:39 (the uphill got the best of me!)

For the first time, I have a sore spot on the pad of my left foot (for lack of a better term?). I don't know if it's the Brooks 7's, as I think this was the first time I've used them on a long walk. I hope it feels better soon!

I think I need another Public Service Announcement: As much as I do sometimes enjoy making myself the center of attenion, it's not my b-day. Still trying to figure out how my spelling wobbled to make people think that. Thanks fro teh good wishes, though. I'm keeping them anyway! ;)

OK, glad it wasn't just me Carrie, I felt horrible I missed your post about your birthday....I knew it was Mel's.

Have a great day anyways:hug:

Oh, no! Not another birthday mishap! I did that last year. :upsidedow

:dance3: :dance3:
Happy UNbirthday, Carrie!!!! :dance3: :dance3:

OK, I am sitting here feeling sorry for myself and I need a kick in the pants.

I have picked up alot of old bad eatting habits again....:confused3 I was diagnosed with high cholesteral and tryglycerides about a year ago, ate really well lost 40 pds and got my numbers where they should be, DR don't even think I needed a f/u but I asked for one in a year anyways.

Well, since May, I have gainned 5 pds back eating lots of crap, drinking pop and although I am getting in some workouts not all of them. I don't know what is wrong with me, I have such a huge history of heart disease and stroke in my family you think that would smarten me up but it isn't.

Sorry to whine to you all but I just wanted to vent it out and maybe actually "saying" it out loud might make me realize what a huge mistake I will be making if I gain back all my weight and turn back into a couch potatoe.

I still have alot of weight to lose, about 15 - 25 pds so I can't procrastinate on this.....I have to get moving.....and my first 1/2 is in just over 2 months:scared1:

Help!!!!!!

Shoot, Carrie. I had that chocolate layer cake in your honor for nothing. :rotfl:

Hi everone!

I'm going to take WWDave's job today and supply you all with the joke of the day. A lady I work with sent this to me.

Dear Friends,
I wanted to share this personal story with you.
I rear ended a car yesterday.......I was very embarrassed.

The driver got out of the other car, and he was a DWARF and he was
pissed!

He looked up at me and said "I am NOT happy!"

I said, "Then which one are you?"

Maybe not as good as Dave's, but I chuckled at it!

Terri

Hey all. Just thought I would post, in case Angie (angietuck) doesn't get on here today, but I got a message from her this am. Apparently, things went from bad to worse with her DH's back probs, and he ended up having to have surgery. She said she was going to try to post today to update us and to say HI!

Did my speedwork out this am (4X800s) and then some light weights. Then off to Home Depot I went. I got this crazy hair to repaint our kitchen. We bought this house new last july and all the walls are painted "builder's beige". So now here I sit, covered in "espresso" and "briquette" color paint. Definitely counting this as xt!

Craig--so, if Mel is your preferred pharmacist, what does that make me???;)

Happy Belated Birthday to Mel! And I guess, a Happy UN-Birthday to Carrie!

Have a great rest of the afternoon all!

:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for ANgie and dh!!!

Stephanie - :rotfl:

Terri - That was bad! Thank you! :lmao:

Helen - Can't wait to meet you!

Cam & Howard - You two run more races than the rest of us combined. Good luck!

Wendy - Good luck this weekend. You HAVE to be able to keep up - I like having another WISHer in the group! But I have to admit - last Saturday almost did me in. I'm hoping for a great rebound this weekend.

Has this ever happened to you? You get up off the couch and go into the kitchen and forgot why you went in there? So you get a bottle of water and sit back down and then remember why you got up, in the first place. So you head back into the kitchen and forget again.

Unfortunately, all the time!

Dana - I dealt with the shin issue last year and earlier in the spring. I finally overcame it with lots of stretching, I think, but I was sidelined for a month before the Minnie last year.

Krista - I think fighting off the bug definitely counts as XT!

Monica & Lynnda
- When you solve the PF problem, let me know. I thought I had it under control, but my foot has hurt ALL WEEK, no matter what I'm doing.

Kim - Thank you for the panic attack! And we're always here for support - just get out there and put in the steps. I'm pretty sure the pounds and the cholesterol numbers will fall into place.

Renee - If you can get up early enough, our group is always open to guest runners. Just be at Shelley Lake by 6:30 (so yes, you may need to sleep in your running clothes!) There are groups doing 10, 12, 14, and 16 mile runs on Saturday.

Terri - :lmao:

Stephanie - Thanks for the update on Angie. I've been worried about her.

Had planned to come home tonight and go out for a run, but the TM looks like it's gathering dust. Since my foot is hurting so bad, I think I'll give it a rest and run inside instead - that way if the pain gets unbearable, I can always bail out. I'm really bummed about the PF - the orthotics seemed to be helping, but for the last 3-4 weeks it's been getting worse, and this week the heel has hurt all day every day since I ran on Saturday. I've been icing and stretching, but it's not helping.

Think I'll run and watch the TDF!

Jackie

Got in 3.16 tonight, pretty hot out, but no humidity, so that was good...still some pulling behind my knee, so I didnt push too hard, just enough!

Just a quick drive by as superbusy today.

PF sufferers, I said this a couple of months ago but I swear that the thing that finally cured mine was this stretch... You place your foot on your opposite knee and basically pull the toes toward your other knee so you stretch out your PF. you're supposed to hold it for 10 seconds, repeat it 10 times and do it three times a day. It's a total faff but within days of doing it mine was under control - and that was after 4 months of weekly physiotherapy costing over $1000 that did nothing. Mine still niggles ever so often, but if I spend one day doing that stretch it clears up again (lets hope it stays that way for the next 6 months -after that I'm going into retirement!!) helen

:cool1: HELLO HELLO HELLO :cool1:

I have really missed you guys:hug: And ya'll are so sweet to be concerned about us. I will try really hard to keep this as short as possible but I can't make any promises, SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED!!:confused3

So Bobby had a disc in his back that was leaking on to a nerve :scared1: YES very painful!! He was trying epidural shots, physical therapy and stopped running all together. None of it worked. He called from work at the fire department one night and told me I had to come get him. He was flat on his back in the Bay and could not sit, stand or walk.

The surgeon said he needed surgery right away and was AMAZED :confused3 that this man had run 2 half marathons with his back the way it was.
The WONDERFUL news is, Bobby is completely pain free for the first time in a year :woohoo: . The bad news is the surgeon says he should not run at all anymore because his spine is extremely lose compared to other people and there is too much rubbing and grinding going on there. (I think we should get a second opinion because I miss running with him so much!!)
I almost forgot to mention that this surgery came a week before we were supposed to move :scared: I freaked out a little, cause I did not know how I was going to move an entire house by myself, but thank God for firefighters, they are one of the best groups of people I have ever met -- BESIDES YOU GUYS OF COURSE :cheer2: . They showed up at our house the day we were supposed to move with trucks and trailers and took care of all of it.

To top it all off, Bobby has a lawn business on his days off from the fire dept and they have been cutting all his yards and will not take any money or anything for it. THEY ARE WONDERFUL

OK sorry, but there is more

My back pain has gotten worse since the MINNIE and I have not run further than 3 miles at a time and I am lucky if I average that 2 or 3 times a week.:headache: For those of you who know the distances and speeds that were running you can imagine how frustrating this is.

The thing that would really help me after talking to people and doing a lot of research is to strengthen my core, which I have been trying to do but was not really consistent. So I started this week commited back to strengthening my core and running.

Well starting back to running in July in Florida has been little more than a challenge :cool2: But so far this week I have run 3 miles 3 times and worked my core 3 days and I can honestly say I already feel a difference in my back. So for now my goal is to just maintain some kind of consistent runnning (NO PR's anytime soon for me) and REALLY concentrate on my core. I don't think I see a 4 hr FULL in January for me, but you never know I guess. I am REALLY sorry :rolleyes1 for the extremely long post and for dropping off the face of the planet. But thank you for the warm welcome back even before I came back!!

angie

Nothing to report still :rolleyes1

I am hoping Sunny is doing well with her spinal thing-a-ma-bob test drive! :wizard:

I wanted to start gung-ho with the training again tomorrow. But yet again, LTO! :rotfl: Last night, we decided to go camping up north this weekend & take Zack to Santa's Village. So, I really doubt I will get in any serious training. I do plan on swimming, lots of park walking, and maybe taking a walk around the campground each night. It's not alot, but will have to do until next week.

Oh, and I saw the neurologist today about that weird warm sensation that I get in my right thigh. Well, apparently I have a pinched nerve in the groin area which affects that part of my leg. It's really not painful, just warm then goes away. He said I could get stabbing pain from this though. If that happens, I can have daily meds (I have enough of those already, thanks), injections, or even surgery. I just sat there shaking my head no. :rotfl: He wants to see me back in 2-3 months. So, we'll see what happens. He did ask if I'd gained any weight. :rolleyes1 I have gained a bout 5-10 lbs. this spring from being a bad girl. He said added weight might be what is bothering this nerve. So, I really do need to get back on the training bandwagon asap. I do not want more meds!

I will start exercising again on Monday. I want to get going next week because the week after that I am on vacation and not going anywhere. (never done that before) So I can really concentrate on cranking out the workouts!

Angie - so glad to hear from you - but not to hear what's been going on! Those firefighters are wonderful! Thank goodness Bobby got the surgery & is doing well. Maybe he can walk with us Penguins if he is no longer able to run. I do agree with a second opinion though! Take care of your back too - don't push it, you speed demon! :-)

Hey all. When I got home I just didn't feel like running. So I rode the bike to the store for buns and brought DD in the trailer. So 30 minutes of biking with a 50 thing dragging behind me. Then after dinner I decided to speed walk the dog. I am trying to speed my pace up. I managed 2.13 miles at a 15:30ish pace. WOW, that is the fastest yet for me.

Helen - I agree, I do that stretch and it helps. Now if I would just stick to doing it regularly!!

Jackie - Another stretch my pod suggested is http://www.aafp.org/afp/20010201/467.html The first one I do regularly and the second one sometimes.

Angie - thanks for the update. :wizard: for DH. I hope he is able to maintain some sort of physical activity. Maybe biking will appeal to him. Glad to hear you are feeling better also. I was worried!

OK, I guess I should get off the puter and so something around the house... or go to bed!!!

Mel - Happy Belated Birthday! I hope you had some wonderful yummy goodies!
Shan - Good luck in Las Vegas and say hi to the King for me if you see him!
Angie - Major Pixie dust to your DH, I hope his surgery goes well and continues to be pain free. I hope that he will be able to start running again with you without any reccurances of his painful leaky disc (that makes my back spasm in pain just reading it).
Kristi - I hope your pinched nerve gets better!
Hockeychic - By posting it, you've confronted it and now you can start getting busy. I am a food addict. I can't have small relapses and just start back to eating healthy with a snap of the fingers. It's a very mental thing for me, when I start eating healthy, I can stay that way, but if I'm eating pizza, ice cream, etc....watch out. I just take it one day at a time, if I can conquer today, tommorow will take care of itself, and can't change yesterday. Then tommorow becomes today and a new challenge presents itself. You can do it. Just by being part of this team shows your committment to healthy choices in your life.

Today was another milestone in my journey to being a marathoner. Every year for the past 32 years, the Bix 7 has been THE road race in the Quad Cities. For awhile now, on Thursday nights starting at 6pm they close off lanes of traffic and have the Bix at 6. You can get in training runs/wogs/walks on the actual course for the whole 7 miles. I have walked the Bix 7 before, but tonight is the very first time I've ran it - from start to finish - the whole 7 miles. In boot camp we ran, but not having a Garmin and not having a drill instructor that would shout out pace times and distances really left me in the dark as to how far we actually ran. So I would have to say that tonight I ran for 7 miles for the very first time in my life. My legs are a little sore (no kick boxing for me right now), but my spirit is soaring. If anyone out there is having trouble getting out there to walk, wog, or run, and have doubts as to if they could do it or not, whether its a 1 mile walk, or a full marathon, listen to this....I once weighed in at 312 pounds. I now weigh 220. I am training for my very first marathon. I have walked two half marathons and run 2 5K races. I WILL finish that marathon in September. I've always felt that if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will. I now know that is only half right. I will have those, who out of love (spouse, family, close friends), will believe in me no matter what, but it only makes a difference if I believe in myself as well, and act on it, live the belief. So many others here do that and then some. I find motivation and inspiration on these boards on a daily basis. The whole "If I can do it, you can too" has been used so much that it may have lost some of its impact sometimes, but it still remains pertinant and very potent to what I am trying to say. :thumbsup2

Happy Training!:yay:

Stacey

I envy you living in the Sangre de Christo's. I must be amazing to wake up every day and look out of the window. When I was a freshman in high school we lived in Breckenridge, but my mother decided that even though it was my father's one great opportunity in life, and I loved the place, that "we" didn't like it and "we" needed to leave. If it sounds like I'm carrying around a lot of resentment, I am. Just think about the ability of your CV system to process oxygen and move it around your body!

Carrie

Sorry about this but . . . "Hey, it's my unbirthday too!" "A very merry unbirthday to yoooooooooooouuuuuuu."

Stephanie

Sorry a thousand times over. I did not know you were also a noble apothecary. Our DD's godmother/guardian if necessary is also an pharmacist. Apparently you guys are all trustworthy, loyal, and all the other parts of the scouts'motto.

Andrew

The Bix is certainly well known as a big time race. I also assume it's pretty hilly given the Quad Cities terrain (I drove though the area 14 days ago!). Congratulations to you on hititng that milestone. You should look back at all you've accomplished and feel good. That is an excellent RESULT (my favorite soccer term), and you have earned much respect for earning it.

Angie

Best to you and Bobby for a quick and total recovery.

Altitude Update: It appears that my body is adjusting. This evening I ran 8 miles, all over the campus and town, up and down hills. The only time I felt it was when I climbed out of the creek up to the ridge where the stadium sits. When I got up there my legs were on fire, in complete oxygen debt, and full of lactic acid. I thought I'd need to walk a few steps to recover, but I slowed down a touch, and in 100 meters I was off at my usual pace. I averaged 9:40 for the 8 miles, and even though pride is a deadly sin, I feel pretty darn good about that one.

Plus I showed some sense (shocking isn't it? :scared1: ) tongiht. After seeing all the articles about Ipods and lightening, when I stepped out it was sprinkling here but there was a tremendous thunderstorm about 5 miles south of here. I actually left the Ipod and ran with only my own thoughts and music. I suppose it's good practice for Disney. Luckily, and I'm holding them to this, Dana and Colleen will run with me and provide the musical and comedic interludes as needed for 256 miles.

The full is 6 months from today. The countdown begins  .

Craig
