Wk of July 8--WISH Walking/Running Club

Well, I'm poking my head in the door here again.

Summers never seem to work out too well for me. Two years ago, I severely injured my back and was out of training for about 6 weeks; this year, it's been "women's issues" that sent me through nearly 12 weeks of anemia, bed rest, tests, and now finally I'm back to training again. I'm on an iron supplement, but they have (at least for the time being) stopped threatening me with impending surgery. I'll spend the next few weeks just trying to regain the fitness I've lost. The biggest casualty may be my training with the Raleigh Galloway Group. My pace group has been adding miles, getting fitter and faster, while I've been sidelined. I had struggled to keep up with them before all this happened -- this may be the nail in the coffin. I'll see how it goes on this Saturday's 10 miler, then make my decision.

The good news is, I can always report my training to you guys, right?

Happy birthday, Mel!

Well, it's been a little while since I've made it to the boards. A mix of being out of town, busy at work, family get togethers, being at work, out of town again, and a trojan on my computer that I've finally been able to wipe out (it was affecting my connection status for a long time

Andrew, Dude, you won't catch anything from those racy sites. Worry not your secret is safe with us.:rolleyes1

Tiger Lily, "bad kids", I resemble that remark.pirate:

Judy feel better dear lady, you made the right decision. You will be a lot faster now with both feet facing the same direction.:)

Bill, they are already mentioning your name in the same sentence as Vic, Judy and I. They haven't even met you and already you are infamous and known to run with the "bad kids".:cool1: You said you are going to WDW soon, are you going to make the ToT event in Oct?

When you get my age you can plead senility. Instead of them saying what a dummy, they say poor thing he can't help it. Or they just say "YARC".:guilty:

Has this ever happened to you? You get up off the couch and go into the kitchen and forgot why you went in there? So you get a bottle of water and sit back down and then remember why you got up, in the first place. So you head back into the kitchen and forget again.

On to the business of the day. I'm heading out to do another 4 miler on the hills. It's a bit cooler and less huimid today, I hope I can walk in those conditions. My Pretty Princess is sleeping in so I'm on my own today.

Happy training today y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Mel, so sorry I missed your birthday post!!
party: :bday: party:
Helen, Whoo Hoooo, Helen's comin' to Orlando!! :woohoo: Congratulations!! I'll be there rootin' ya on!!:dance3:
Sunny, :wave2: Is today stimulator day? (SHUT UP, Optimator!!)
Optimator, Even I dropped my jaw at Andrew's trojan comment! However, I am not as witty as you guys are..but surely, SOMEONE is going to come up with something!! :lmao:

For our newcomers, keep putting those steps in. Yes, there are speedy folks here who bemoan the fact that they have ONLY done an 11 minute mile ;), but they really are very nice people. :rolleyes1 They let me hang around, and my top speed is a 14:30 pace. When I did my first mile at 19 minutes in 2006, I never thought I would see a 16 minute mile. I never was an athletic person, never a jogger, but I followed John Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals walk the half program and completed the Disneyland inaugural feeling fantastic!! I did push myself to do a 15 minute pace for Minnie that year and ended up with a hurt foot for a month. But I was able to come back and do the DL in September followed by RftT in October. Slow and steady may be frustrating at times, but you are really making great strides in getting into a routine and training your muscles!! Keep at it!! :goodvibes Anne

I got in a quick mile between storms last night, so glad I didnt stay out after reading that article about the lightening/ipod (yikes!!)

Best part, it felt like nothing! Not long ago, the idea of doing a mile was intimidating to me, but now, WOW, it was nothing!!!

Wendy don't even think about giving up. You have an amazing amount of strength and endurance and it won't take long to get back your fitness. I've walked races with you and I know how strong and determined you are. You went up that aweful hill at the Pig like it wasn't even there.

Greetings -

MUCH better day today. I've actually been walking around. Ok maybe its more like hobbling. Gimping. But hey, I'm mobile! :thumbsup2

Mel – Thanks for the med advice. As soon as I can find my glasses and read the very tiny print, I can figure out how many mg I am taking. Oh Happy Birthday!!! :cake:

OMG that is a lot of ice cream!!!! And an entire can of whipped cream?

Leana – I fail to see the problem.

Dana – Maybe I can stand outside the Beach Club with a spoon for you! :lmao:

Andrew – YAY glad to se you. I missed your posts. I’m glad you were able to keep up with the training thru all that.:thumbsup2

Mike
– I wasn’t going to go there. Honest. It didn’t even cross my mind. :rolleyes1 Bwaaaaa haaaaa haaaaaa! (How can you know me so well already???)

Wendy – I’m happy to see you here, but sorry about the “women’s issues”. Ugh. I hope you are on the fast track to recovery now. Yes yes check in with us. No matter what!

Howard and Cam – Another 5K? I can not keep up with you guys! Howard, in your honor I was thinking of getting a Kitchen Sink after the Half and rolling around in it.

WWDave – HA HA HA:lmao: Yes both feet in the same direction should help my pace considerably! Hey, I feel honored to be included in the “Bad Kids” group.

Anne – :hyper: There’s nothing wrong with our “slow and steady” pace. I figure it gives the spectators a chance to get a good look at the bootyliciousness. ;)

good morning :teeth:

i too am going to join in here if you all don't mind? :teeth: I'm trying to reclaim my enthusiasm for my powerwalking shoes.

today i'm going to get in a 5-6 miler. I too am enjoying the same cool front that Dave is taking advantage of

i think i need a new toy? yea....that will get me excited. i have been pining for a Garmin for almost 2 years now....maybe it's time to take the plunge. I read the thread about everyone loving their 205 (?) i just want basic, small, easy to use but will track my progress. used is fine for me, i'll go ebay probably.

Happy birthday Mel!!

Well... I am seriously depressed and angry. I have been doing so good with my trianing so far this year. I have been using a mileage build up plan to get my mileage up before I seriously start training for Disney this year. I wanted to be better prepared than last year, and I definately wanted to improve my pace. Now I have gone and done something to my shins. My right one is just sore, but my left one really hurts quite a lot. I did the whole stand on one leg and bounce thing. It doesn't hurt with my right leg, but it does with my left. So, it looks as if I am going to be taking the rest of the week off. I haven't increased my mileage significantly, at least I don't think so.

week 1: 14 miles total: LR of 6
Week 2: 16.3 miles total: LR of 6
Week 3: 15 miles total: LR of 6
Week 4: 17.8 miles total: LR of 7
Week 5: 21 miles total: LR of 8

Well.... I guess I did increase by more than 10% didn't I? I just didn't realize it. I also have about 260 miles on these shoes. The last pair only made it about that before I started getting aches and pains in my knees. I guess I'll take the rest of the week off, then look at how to revamp my schedule to lower my mileage a bit and take it slower. If anyone has any advice or suggestions I am definately open to them. Anything to get rid of the pain and back out on the road.

Dana

Hi everyone,

Trying to get over my nervousness of posting. I am looking forward to joining the WISH team here in Chicago in a few weeks! I did my 8 miles walking yesterday. It was great. My feet are a tad achy today. My legs feel fine.

Maggie

p.s. My dh agreed to at least me doing ToT this October! I am going to see if I can round up my dd16 to join me.

Hi Everyone!

Sorry I haven't been posting. This single mom stuff is very difficult! Lucky for me though, Dh is home for the rest of the summer. Just in time for us to move into our new house. Our new house will have a router so that all the computers can be on the internet at the same time - no more fighting about who gets the computer! (Webkins are evil.)

I had to choose between getting up early for a run or getting up early to use the internet. Sorry guys, running won. Running has kept me sane so far. Goofy might destroy that though.

I have spent the summer working on my speed only. No runs longer than 10k since May. Its worked too! I am consistalntly running a sub 9 minute mile. Plus all those minor aches and pains have faded away. I think I am ready to start some serious distance training! I know I am looking forward to slowing way down!

Cecilia - who really is Cruella de mom this summer

Good morning TEAM!!! We've almost made it the weekend!!

Melissa--Thank you!! :thumbsup2

Dana--:wizard: for your shins!!!!! I'm sorry that you are hurt and have to take a few rest days. I'm wondering if you slow your pace down a bit, that will help your shins. I know whenever I hurt something I can always pinpoint it back to either too many miles too soon or increasing my pace too rapidly.

Maggie--No nerves!!! :) I'm glad you are coming to ToT, we are going to have so much fun!!!

Wendy--:wizard:  I hope your 10 miler goes smoothly!

WW Dave--Isn't the cooler weather and lower humidity great?? I'm hoping it holds out until I get my 3 miler in after work tonight.

SW Dave--Where are you?????

My wo went pretty good last night, I went to the gym to xt. I did the stationary bike on the random hill program for 30 minutes, "rode" about 12 miles. After that I lifted--rowing machine, leg press, leg curl, and leg extension. I tell ya, I think I need to invest in some cycling shorts, even though I only ride on the stationary bike at the gym. I have a very sore booty!!!!! I guess I can also count my drive to the gym as xt because my heart rate was definitely up. Some type of large winged bug (maybe a type of locust?) flew in my car window and proceeded to "attack" me as I was driving 70 mph on the highway, of course I was in the construction zone where there is no shoulder to pull off on. I don't know if it was biting at me or if it had prickly stuff on it's feet, but it got my shin, both thighs, came back around and got my neck and back before I finally got it out of the car. That was loads of fun!!!!!

I love Anne and she can always hang around me!!!! Even if I have had 2 nirvana runs where I broke 40 minutes for 4 miles. :p

Happy belated b-day Mel !!!!!!! Glad you had happy spending! Have fun this weekend!!!

OptiMike - Thanks tons for quoting! I did miss it! ROTFL!!!!! I lol'd too. Gonna' get me in trouble. (thansk for the warnign about teh blonde, too. HAte that crap, might have turned back adn missed it.) BTW, I would have scored much higher than her for finess points, or lack thereof, though. ;)

NEBill - Really, I didn't mean to go off on you! :goodvibes: (FOr any others who may be reading, I though Bill was putting himself down. I don't tend to just go off on people.)

Christa - You are absolutely right. However, most of us still feel we need that acceptabnce. We shouldn't, but we do. My fear is for the many that feel they need this that don't have the support we do and think that the "runners" of the world want them to get off their bike path. Oh wait, runners don't use bike paths. :p

Public Service Announcement:: I feel I should clarify my TM injured knees. That accident was in February. Yes, it hurt at the time, but hurt my ego most. They are completely heeled, but I have ugly scars. That's why the doc commmented on my poor knees. No need for additional sympathy. I can laugh at it now. :goodvibes

Good Morning TEAM!

Mel - Happy be-lated birthday!:bday: Let us know if you like the book.

Christa - You are fast girl!:worship:

Lynnda - Sorry to hear that you have PF. I have it too and was wondering what you're doing for it?

Leana - I'm w/you about the Kitchen Sink, it's insane, but it sure looks good. I was @BC when someone ordered it and the staff announced it as they presented it to the customer.

Andrew - Welcome Back!

Dana - Hope your shins get better.:flower3:

Yesterday I rode my bike for 30 mins. and that's the first exercise, (besides stretching), that I've done since the Heavy Half. I plan on walking on my tm today before work.

Have a great day!:grouphug:

OMG....Just stopping in quickly......looking at something on my calender and realized that 6 MONTHS today Us 1/2 marathoners and Goofy people will have completed our event!!!!:woohoo:

Ok back to work.

Kim

If Lily is going to call out the lurkers, I guess I'll have to step up and post:laughing: .
I have been trying to lurk and honestly my lack of posting is just due to my crazy, crazy life these days. I keep telling DH it's only a matter of time before the breakdown:confused3 . This thread goes so fast and it is just overwhelming at this point in time.

Marathon training for MCM is going well - I have a 10 miler planned for Saturday.

Mel - Happy birthday:cheer2: !!

Judy - Glad you're doing better post-surgery:wizard:.

Helen - Great to hear we'll be seeing you and Tim again in January!!

WW Dave - Loved your pics.

Dana - :wizard: for your shins.

Anne - Great advice.

Wendy - You are such an inspiration. Please don't get discouraged:hug: . Best of luck on your 10 miler this weekend.

I'll sign off for now. We also just got a wireless router last night so hopefully I can get the chance to hold myself more accountable to my WISH family.

Happy training and racing to everyone this weekend:cheer2: :woohoo:

Oh I'm loving this lower humidity today. I did the same 4 mile hill route as yesterday but a full 2 min and 13 seconds faster with the same effort. Time today was 50:42, very comnfortable walk. I might push the pace a bit tomorrow and see if I can get around 12 min per mile on those hills.

A note of observation on shoe wear. If you wear light weight trainers or racing flats to train in, the old rule of thumb that shoes last 400 miles may not apply. I'm finding that the flats are good for about 200 miles before I start getting an increase in minor aches and pains. Any time you have an increase in soreness after training it's a good idea to suspect the shoes.

A question now, how come I get pegged as a bad kid, when DianeL and Robert (ultraMickeyMouse) don't?

I wish Dave (Mouse Skywalker) would come back, last I heard he was spotted at the airport in an orange robe beating a tamborine. I wanted him to see the avatar I found for him. I ain't even going to do a search for "Big Vic" avatars again:eek: When you search HonneyBee, you get the running Mickey she uses.

Have a great day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Happy belated birthday to Mel and Carrie! :wizard:

Mel, that is some story about the ipod. Wow... Tuesday we had a house in the neighborhood across the street from us get struck by lightening in a pop up thunderstorm and it burned completely down. I heard the lightening and it made me jump a foot in the air. Shortly after I heard tons of sirens and then not so long later we had about six different news helicopters out. The kids were all in the street watching them. A few years back we had a house in our neighborhood burn down after being struck, too. So odd to be so close by?

Finished my first week of my maintenance program this morning. I thought it looked easy since I have backtracked back to having walk breaks in my runs, but today about killed me. I have no idea why! So I did 11.81 miles with an average pace of 12:00 this week.

I'm off to Vegas this weekend so if I don't get back on I hope everyone has happy training! :goodvibes

Morning folks! Wow, terrible story about the iPod. First the train accident, now the thunderstorm....!

I have to tell you guys, if I don't see another pancake for a good 6 months or so, I may be OK. Stampede week here is a blast, and I love going to all the Stampede breakfasts....but with my week of rest and all the pancakes I've been consuming this week, I feel blech:crazy2:. Oh well, I have my first boot camp class tonight to help with that! Boot camp again on Saturday, yoga Sunday, then my first run Monday night.

I keep tweaking my Goofy training plan, but I think I've got it figured out.
For July and August I will:
- Mondays: run from 3 - 4 miles
- Tuesdays: BBC
- Wednesday: run from 3 - 4 miles
- Thursdays: BBC
- Friday: Rest
- Saturday: LR
- Sunday: Yoga

From September onwards:
- Mondays: Yoga
- Tuesdays: run from 3 - 5 miles (3 miles for weeks where my back to back LRs are really long, 5 miles for the shorter LRs)
- Wednesdays: cross training
- Thursdays: run from 2 - 5 miles (2 miles for weeks where my back to back LRs are really long, 5 miles for the shorter LRs)
- Fridays: Rest
- Saturday - half LR to a max of 10 mi.
- Sunday - LR to a max of 20 mi.

I've tweaked it so I'm increasing about 10%, so hopefully this will be a doable schedule!

Hi all! Just a quick post. I have not done my XT yet today; I'll do it tonight while DS is at soccer. They've opened a Y branch in the same facility as the indoor soccer field -- no excuses now! Tomorrow I'll be taking DS and a friend to baseball camp and will not get a chance to work out, so it will be a forced rest day. I'm hoping I can drag myself out of bed early Saturday morning to get in a LR. Anyone ever tried sleeping in their running clothes? ;)

Happy training, all! :)
Renee

ps - :welcome: to all the new posters/ex-lurkers!
