Wk of Jul 30--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Today should have been a rest day but I played water buffalo for Lynne during her 12 mile run. I only ended up doing 10.24 miles as she cut the run short. My average speed was only 7.2 mph but I topped out at 20 mph.

Tomorrow is supposed to be 32 min of r1/w3. We are going over to Green Lakes so Lynne can swim while I walk/run. Hopefully, it will be somewhat less humid.

Carrie - great job on he Coast Guard Race. The hills are always a challenge.

Colleen - welcome back.

Happy training.

Hey all...could not keep up with the thread last week due to well...life! :confused3 So real quick!

Supposed to do 16 friday...87+% humidity, around 85 deg. @ 0600! Got to 8 and thought I was going to DIE! Got home and still felt really bad so I called the DR. They got me in really quick..to make a short story even shorter..I HAD STREP THROAT! :scared1: :faint: :scared:
No wonder I felt so bad! 16 would have KILLED ME! I got on the couch and stayed there for 48 hours...I still feel aweful and it is b/c of running sub 10 MPM with strep. Who knew! :confused3

Hi WISH Team!

Kathy, thanks for posting the info about pace music. I'm going to check on that.

Carrie, whew! Thanks for the pics of your race. We can definitely work out something with sticky info. We'll pm if you can clean out your pm place as I understand it is filled.

No, not doing DL and really slim after analyzing today that the other will occur. (Way to sad about that part just now...still hoping against the odds.)

I went out this weekend and did 8.5 miles in Saturday's humid morning. I feel pretty good about it. My first 4 went at 15 min pace. Then I made myself take it slow. Hot hot hot. I feel good with what I did.

Kristi, welcome to the "club" I managed to lose one nail on each foot after Goofy. (Different nails as the "longest" is different on each foot for me.) Podiatrists mentioned something about tongue straps that "might" help. I have not looked into them. They did not mention resizing since I took my shoes and they thought the fit was fine. It was basically said that it is a by-product of the event. If you are wanting to have pretty feet, I've also been told you can paint what you have or also have a fake one put on. Since my "loss" was in winter and we weren't in sandal mode, I made it until something grew a bit.

Looking forward to the new pictures after Tuesday. Have fun!

Dave, your ressies for family breakfast as you are finishing may still have them rushing to get to you. You could slow it down, and also check via cell as to where they are with the meal and where you are on the course.

I can't comment on your dinner question I have not eaten at both. Ohanas is good though.

Matt, that schedule is quite a short one. I guess if you are trainied up though it will work. I'm a Penguin for sure so John bingham MfM is my program.

Monte, I am impressed with your pace! You are way ahead of me now!

Mel, hope that your foot problems can be cleared soon.

Jodi, great idea about the PT job. I was thinking of looking into that, but figured it wouldn't help with the need to get off time when I must make that trip in Jan.)

That pace will leave you Plenty of pic time!

Colleen, fab pics you shared.

Pat, had a stonker huh? Don't worry too much, you can do it!

Jen, good luck at the fair. Mmmm fair food!

Past my bed time so off I go...

Noooooooooooo, I hit the wrong button and lost my huuuuuuuge reply. I had been working on it since 5:00am.

Shoot, I'll have to find some time to reply from work today.

Carrie! Wow, great job with the race. So proud of you for getting out there!!!! :grouphug:

Lily...good job with that LR this weekend! :thumbsup2

Christa....((hugs)) sure hope you are feeling better soon! Good thing you went to the dr though! Strep throat can be brutal!!

Jodi...a 12 mpm should be a very reasonable pace...i think it will allow you time to enjoy the scenery!!!! Sounds like a good plan to me!

Colleen! Congrats on the 1/2 marathon. I am super impressed :). WTG!!! :cheer2:

As for me.....since the 5K on Wednesday I took a rest day on thurs and did kbx on friday. Unfortunately, it was a KILLER class and my hamstrings have been sore ever since. I scheduled a 6 miler for myself for sunday...but unfortunately due to the heat of the afternoon with humidity and temps in the low 90s...I could only do 5 miles. My pace was around 11 mpm and I was hurtin'! I really haven't had a "good" run....one that has actually felt good...in sooo long. I definitely feel like I've been a bit of a running funk. I think it may be due to the weather....I know the heat and humidity really affects most people (myself included). I'd just love to get out there and have a great run again :confused3 . Anyway....that's it for me. I have another 5K this week....thursday evening. Of course the temps that day are supposed to around 100 degrees :rotfl: . Not sure I'll post a personal best on THAT one. But heck....I'll go do it and grab me another T-shirt :teeth: .

Good morning. It's gonna be a hot week here in Maryland. Heat indexes around 110 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. :faint: I'm glad I do my walks at 5:00 am.

Sunday was my long walk. 7.5 mi in 1:44 (13:50). Nothing remarkable. Just made it through.

OT, I'm sure worried about my kids. They're away at camp this week. This is their third and last week. (They come home on the weekends.) The weather is just plain dangerous. It's a good camp; the counselors will look out for them. But, I can't help wishing I could magically know that they're drinking, resting, and cooling. :worried:

I'm baaaack!!

We had a fabulous time!! Guess what I got for my b-day, my step-sis had to work Sat. a.m. so she couldnt get to Atlanta for lunch & had to just meet us at the Aquarium which was so crowded her being there didnt matter :cool1: I got to eat my birthday lunch where I wanted with my family & my neice & her fiance. The aquarium was great, crowded but great! We also went to the zoo yesterday & it was perfect zoo weather (a cool front came in Sat night  ) & the boys really enjoyed it there too. The gorrillas & orangutans had babies with them & they were so cute to watch.

Obviously no training this weekend so its back at it hard this week.

Colleen- Welcome home! Good to "see" you again. Great job on your race.

Christa- hope you feel better soon, that strep is rough.

Carrie-that's so cool you had a mini WISH meet. Great pic!

Craig-that sound like a great trip!

Sara-ohh, I love cruises. You will have a blast!

Got to get settled in & get into "back to school" mode. They start back Thursday. :sad2: The summer went by way to fast.

Good morning team!! Can you believe it's almost August?? This year is flying by. I had a pretty good run last night, I did 4 miles on the treadmill (I have to be honest and say I'm feeling pretty salty after hearing about you guys running 17 miles, 8 miles, etc), I finished in 43:58--I was pleased with that. It wasn't the best run, for some reason, my legs kept cramping and I had to stop a couple of times and stretch, don't know what that was about, but the important thing is I got my steps in. This week I think I'm doing 4-5-4 and then my 5K on Saturday, I'm really trying to get my mileage up before training starts in 22 days ( :scared1: ).

Dave--Sorry about the post, I HATE when that happens! :furious: I wanted to remind you, or maybe point out to you that you need to be sort of liberal with guesstimating your marathon pace and finish time. The marathon starts at 6:00, but you might not cross the start line until 10 minutes later, depending on what corral you are in. For the half, it took me 12 minutes to get up to the start line, I was in corral F, now the marathon should be a little better because there are 2 start lines, but it may still take you 5-10 minutes to even cross the start line. Also, for the first couple of miles, the course is a little congested and you could be running a slower pace while you try to weave in and out of people.

Christa-- :grouphug: :grouphug: I am SO sorry that you are sick, I hope that you are feeling better soon. Thank goodness you stopped when you did during your run. :wizard: for feeling better.

Lily--I am REALLY going to miss you if you can't make it to Disney. I hope that everything gets worked out and you are there.

Carrie--Awesome job on your 10K! I can't believe the finish line was on a hill! What's up with that??

Heather--Great to "see" you again. Good luck trying to get in all your runs, I still don't know how you do it.

Colleen--I'm glad your back! We missed you! Great job on your half, I would kill to finish a half in 2:15--you are speedy!!

Mel--Rest that foot!!!

Sara--Have a great time on your cruise, I am jealous!!! I know it's a couple of months out, but you'll have to let me know about the Marine Corp marathon after you run it, that's on my list of marathons to run. Although I don't know how I would handle running past the monuments and through Arlington without crying--I am such a basket case!

Pat--Sorry about the stonker, I hate runs like that.

Kathy--Good to "see" you again, I wish you would check with us more often. I've been thinking about Lynne lately, Stephen and I are starting to look for a new car, probably won't get one until next summer, but I've been reading consumer reports and doing comparisons on the different SUV's. What does that have to do with Lynne? One of my favorite SUV's is the Nissan Xterra, whenever I read about it or see, I think of Xterratri. :teeth:

I better start working, I have to leave early for a dentist appointment, not looking forward to that!!

Yet another quickie post from me, but i just wanted to pop in and tell you guys I am going to definately be MIA this week.

Chad's 16 year old nephew was killed last night in a car crash. They were doing about 90 mph in a 30 mph.

So, training might go out the window this week - or be better since I will need to blow off some stress & grief.

Please give your kids a big hug & all of you drive safe, ok?
My Zack is only 3. How do any parents make it through the teenage years?

Sara - The cruise sounds awesome!!! I hope you have a great time! Cool about your man going on the long training run!!!

Krista - You'll be doing those 17 milers soon enough!! Do you think you can get Hines in shape for that by then? Maybe they have a doggie marathon for mortals!

Colleen - We missed you!! Glad you are back.

Amy - I think the heat seriously messes w/ me too. I don't expect a good run until the fall!

Crista - Sorry you have strep! Get some rest!! You'll have to make the princesses wait on you hand and foot!

We went to a big kayakying rally this weekend w/ the local outdoor shop. There were tons of people there. The camping was SUPER HOT, but it was easy b/c they had meals available for purchase so we didn't have to do all the camping work. They did a 20 mile road ride from the campground and I had to PUSS w/ me, so I rode it. I was pretty much able to keep up w/ the others on the road bikes. I think it was b/c the puss has a rigid fork and it is light.

Kristi, prayers said for your nephew, Chad and the whole family. News like this always brings me to tears and yours was no exception.

God bless,

Kristi - So terribly, terribly sorry for your family. :grouphug: You have my deepest sympathies. I'll keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers.

Krista - We'll definitely chat about MCM. I've looked at it for a couple of years too and the fact that it was voted the best marathon for families hooked me. That and the hoards of Marines that will be there. Yummy!! I hope the leg cramps work themselves out before hard core training begins in a few weeks.

TiffJ - You just crack me up!! So glad your SIL didn't rain on your birthday parade. The aquarium and the zoo sound like a great time. Happy Belated Birthday!!

Amy - :wizard: :wizard: For getting the running funk monkey off your back!! Best of luck with the 5k.

Lily - Praying that your circumstances will allow you to be there. :grouphug:

Christa - :wizard: Feel better real soon. Nothing worse than suffering in the summer weather.

Jodi - That's a great goal pace for Goofy. You'll be able to enjoy both races and still have plenty of time for the infamous photo ops.

Terri - :woohoo: WTG on getting training in while on vacation. Be careful in the heat!!

Carrie - Loved the pics and the race report. Congrats on hanging in there through a tough one!!

Colleen - So nice to 'see' you're back safe & sound!! Thanks for sharing the pics and the race report. Sorry it wasn't optimal for you, but definitely a respectable time considering the circumstances.

Craig - Love the quote. Definitely true in our sport.

6 wonderful miles on the treadmill this morning. I truly feel persistence with my pilates and yoga has improved my running mechanics greatly. I used to be so tight through my hip/buttock region and suffered constant pain due to that. Today I felt like my mobility through that region is much improved.

Poor DH didn't do so well on the 10 miles yesterday. I think he allowed himself to get dehydrated. He went out too late in the morning and it was hot here. He was suffering last night. Definitely a rest day for him today.

Happy training to all this week. Please be careful with the heat!!

Good morning all. I hope that everyone has been either doing well or getting better. I have and think will continue only had time to read posts and not reply due to being so busy with work and life. We leave for the world in 10 days :cool1:   :bounce: and cannot wait - boy do we all need this vacation!!!!!!!! Well, I did my modified mini Goofy (or Max as i referred to it before) this weekend - Saturday was a 5 mile race and Sunday was a 5 or 10 mile trail race that you could choose how far you wanted to go on the first of 2 5 mile loops. Saturdays run was unreal with the humidity - I ran the first 3 miles in around 7 minute per mile pace but then was having trouble with the heat and humidity and ended up finishing in 39:09 (194th out of 659). Not bad but way off what I was looking for. Sunday was another of those nutso trail races with a lot of mud, down trees to climb over, downhill slides and some very steep uphill (some you needed to pull yourself up by grabbing trees) portions; all this fun and 90 degree temps with very high humidity again. I opted to do the 5 miles when I got to 3 miles and did not wish to be wipped the rest of the day - have to consider the family with niece and nephew staying over for the weekend and lots of activities planned. I finished in 46:02 but felt a lot more satisfied than on Saturday because the course was so much more difficult and I felt a lot better during and after. I am sorry that I don't have time to reply to everyone - maybe tonight - but hope all have a great pain-free day.

Kristi-- :grouphug: :grouphug: I am so sorry about your nephew. :grouphug:

Melissa--You know, I was thinking, I wonder how many miles Hines will really be able to do with me. His limit right now is about 2 miles, but I think that's because it's so hot. My uncle (he's a breeder, that's where we got Hines from) was telling me that he sold a lab to a co-worker who ran marathons, apparently this dog ran all the runs with the lady. I don't know if the dog did the long runs too, but could you imagine a dog running 20 miles? It's possible, I guess, I've read 2 articles in Runners World about dogs running marathon, they have their own race number and get a medal too--how cute is that??

Good morning all. I'm really struggling in this heat. But worse than me, my mare is really suffering. I am taking tomorrow and Wednesday afternoon off so I can go home and be with her. I am very worried. :(

Saturday was a rest day but yesterday I did 4.3 miles in 65 minutes. I ran for five of that. I was pretty happy with it. :woohoo:

I have started to study the MFM plan for W/R the Half. OK, I'm absolutely not bragging here but the times and distances he has you doing for 14 weeks before the marathon are less then I am doing now. I suppose that plan assumes the participant is not 40 pounds overweight and already athletic. I want to follow his plan but I do not want to backtrack. I think I'll just modify it by continuing to do my distances but following his schedule, if that makes any sense. If this a good idea? :confused3

I have been looking for local 5Ks but there doesn't seem to be anything around here. Hmm..maybe I have to start one.

Mel - Thanks for explaining things. I was thinking of doing 5R/10W intervals. That's what I'm training for. :teeth:

Sara - Cool! What ship are you going on? We went on the Carnival Liberty in April and loved it. It was my fifth Carnival cruise. :boat:

Carrie - WOW, what a race! I agree with you the uphill finish line thing just ain't right. And thanks for the pics! ;)

Tiff - Oh I'm glad you had a good time! YAY!

Krista - Thanks for the advice you gave Dave about the starting line. I'm sort of building in a buffer for that lag at the beginning. :thumbsup2

Christa - Oh no! I hope you feel better today. Geez, Strep must really be going around.

Kristi - That is so sad....I'm so sorry. :sad1:

Mike - Ohhh have a GREAT time! I am not too far behind you. Where are you staying? Wow! You did a lot this weekend! :worship:

OK I REALLY have to get over to my other thread and update it. Just let me do one "real" thing for work.

Krista,
I have a German Shorthaired Pointer that I trained for field work, and to get him in condition, I would build up his mileage to where he would pull me (200lbs) on a bicycle for 6 miles. He pulled the whole six miles with his tail wagging. It was a pleasure to watch a dog work at that level and enjoy every minute of it, (although it did absolutely nothing for my fitness.)

Kristi

Sorry about the terrible loss of the young man. Sadly his immediate family will never be the same.

As Zach gets older, talk with him about all the risky behaviors which can consume teenagers. Talk about drugs, why kids choose to do them or alternatively get sucked down into them, and then talk about the inevitable result of taking that path. Talk about alcohol in the same way. Don't be judgemental, but let Zach know you are aware it is all around, and that you support his choice to be healthy and smart.

Definately talk about cars. The loss of so many kids in cars is always due to poor choices, which a 16 or 17 year old simply doesn't see. Inexperienced drivers, traveling way too fast, throw in alcohol, plus seat belts often not used = certain disaster.

And even more sadly these days, you probably need to talk with him, at the appropriate time, when he's aware of a youngster taking his or her own life.

In my profession I spend way too much of my time trying to help college kids who have lost dear friends to these dangers of youth. The stories leading to dead teens or early 20's are always the same. It's hard to walk that thin line between talking with Zach and preaching to Zach, but you'll find it.

Lastly, not only do kids see themselves as immortal, they absolutely do not see how much they mean to others or the hole that is left when they are gone. Every year in the last class before spring break I remind my kids that it's okay to be a little dumb on break, but please don't be stupid. I tell them they are the joy of their families and the pride of their communities, and they can never, ever be replaced. Then I tell them I look forward to seeing them in the first class after break, when they can tell me (some of) the things they did over break.

Sorry if I've gone off on a tangent, but I see too much of this in my job, and I try so hard with my own daughter and the sons and daughters who have been trusted into my care to keep this from happening.

And most important of all, let Zach know every day how much you love him and what he means to you. That seems to be the greatest vaccine of all.

Craig

Denny--That is so neat about your dog! Hines is a black lab, he's 15 months old and about 70lbs. It is so funny to watch him run, the entire time he looks up at me with a huge smile on his face and his tongue hanging out (usually licking me in the process :rolleyes2 ), he absolutely loves it. I ran with him on Thursday, but he only made it 1.44 miles, before he started lagging behind me and I dropped him off at home. I can't wait until this heat breaks and we can both start running outside again.

Craig -

I am always so impressed by what you have to say. You are a very wise man. :goodvibes
