Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we're a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. Some of us are training for the 2006 Disneyland Half and for the 2007 WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news/training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

I did 2 miles yesterday in 27:28. I did my 5 minute warmup walk then ran until I heard Garmin beep the mile 1 split (8 min running). Then did W5/R5, then W4 and whoa, I was home. Unfortunately, it's been a bad week for my foot. Not sure what exactly happened, but I've had worsening pain this week in the right and the left has started acting up. I've been trying to baby it this weekend and it does seem to be better, but now I'm worried that it's going to be a problem with training.

Tracey... :welcome: Great pace!

Heather...welcome back! How was your 4 miler?

Carrie...congrats on your race! Can't wait to hear more about it!

Sunny...glad things seem to be improving for you! Don't give into the workout temptation! Have you seen the anti-tobacco commercial where the guy keeps going to different rehab clinics to treat his running addiction? :lmao: They do it tongue in cheek (comparing running and M&Ms to tobacco addiction) but I keep thinking whoever came up with that one doesn't understand running ;)

Anne...wow! Congrats on your 7-miler! I keep thinking I need to give the GU a try, but I'm too wimpy :guilty:

Jen...we've been thinking about Ohana for the after-half dining celebration. Last year, I missed an Ohana dinner after the half because I was too wiped out. I'm hoping it will be better this year...DD13 isn't doing the 5K so we won't have to wait around after the half in the cold wind. What kind of work do you do?

Kristi... :wizard: for your toe!

Monica...congrats on your walk! Sorry to hear you may not be able to make it to WDW :sad1: I guess we'll have to take a WISH field trip to CO to meet you...anyone up for Bolder Boulder? party:

Kelley...wow...great walking pace! :moped: Looks like it's just hot and sticky everywhere.

Craig...are you planning to do Race for the Taste again this year? What's your next race? We've been watching the US women's team in World Cup qualifying matches...game today at 1pm on the Deuce!

Dave...that 10 mpm pace looks pretty good! You're ahead of me with that...I can usually maintain a 10:30 pace with short running intervals, but haven't even seen that in awhile.

Lily...oh no...not you too?!? Are you doing DL? I have a mod question for you. If I do a separate post with all our websites, could it be stickied? Then I wouldn't be wasting so much bandwidth every week and it might be more noticeable/available to other WISHers who don't hang out on our threads.

Minnie...how's your back?

Judy...I watch the time when I do my intervals. Garmin can be set for intervals with time or distance, but then it doesn't keep track of mile splits, so I do it on my own. I try to stick to 5 or now, 10 minute interval blocks (W3/R2, R3/W2, W5/R5, etc) because they're easier to keep track of. Doing 5 minute interval blocks means I always run when I see Garmin hit a 5 or a 10. I do find on long distances that I will lose track of the intervals when I start wearing out, so I try to make sure I take the Clif Bloks on a reasonable distance schedule to prevent that.

Howard...congrats on your great news!

Matt...welcome back!

Just a reminder...if you're interested in a WISH team bracelet, please post to the thread.

I'd like to order by mid August so that we'll have them in time for DL!

:lmao: Great timing on your run Mel...you are fast girl! I would love if you guys did a Colorado trip, that would be awesome! The Bolder Boulder is a fun, upbeat 10k that's kinda goofy with all the neighbors joining in....hey, where else do you see an Elvis impersonator singing at a corner gas station?

Before I spend another week being a wanna be lurker, I will at least get a post in today.

Howard - Congrats!!!!

Sunny - Glad you're hanging in there. :grouphug:

Mel - I hope your foot feels better soon. :wizard:

Jen - We're doing 'Ohana w/ DD5 & DD9 post-marathon. Thanks for the great review.

Sorry to anyone else I may have missed. Life is a little crazy these days. The surprise trip I planned for the girls next week morphed into a surprise CRUISE!! OMG, what am I thinking? :confused3 It'll be an awesome time but the preparations have taken a little time away from my WISH friends.

17 miles for me yesterday on the treadmill due to unfavorable heat and humidity outside. I swear it pulls my gait off because my hip is killing me today. Yoga, pilates and swimming today for cross-training to work it out. I'll confess that we have an inground pool and I HATE swimming. At least it's been so hot that the water is more like a bath than a pool. On a better note, DH is doing a 10-miler outside as I type. I am SOOOOO proud of him.

Happy training to all this week. 7 weeks until DL 1/2. :cheer2:

I have been keeping up with the thread but not posting as I have not been doing anything consistent except going to PT for the last 4 months. I started last Mon doing the MfM walk to half schedule to get ready to do the Army Ten Miler with Lynne on Oct 8. I haven't decided if I am going to do either of the races in Jan but need to decide soon.

My training for last week was sporadic. Mon 2 mi 35 min, Tues 1.2 miles slow with my mom, Wed nothing, Thurs massage, Fri PT (released myself), Sat LW supposed to be 2 miles, actuall did 3. To losen up my muscles, I went for a 6 mile bike ride after the walk.

For those of you who have Itunes, I download some paced training music. The MP3 files last for 64 min and are at paces from 130 BPM to 180 BPM. They can also be downloaded from fitpod.com. I used the 130 bpm and averaged a 15.51 pace. I'm not sure what the pace should have been or it I was close to matching the 130 pace. It was titled Walk in the Park.

Mel - take care of you foot. I spent the first 4 months rehabbing a severe case of tendonitis in my foot after the half.

Sunny - hope you get feeling better soon.

Dave - love the socks. Have been wearing them for my walks and bike rides.

Syracuse has broken a record. We have had over 10" of rain for July and we still have 2 days to go. I'm not sure we have had a weekend yet that it didn't rain at some point. The humidity levels are killers also.

Have a good training day.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry I've been away for the past couple of days - - there was nothing really new to report. I was resting my ankle, but I want to get back into running today.

Yesterday, I ended up just doing a lot of housework (did we ever determine if that could be considered crosstraining/).

I also stopped off to the mall and applied for a part-time job (in addition to my full-time) I got one at Macy's....I'm hoping this will help me with Christmas Shopping and extra spending money at Disney in January. I will train on my off days from the part-time job -- right now, I'm on an on call basis but they will need me more as the high school/college kids go back.

I also decided that I will give my DH his basket at the end of August (we went on our first date ever on August 31st). I figure by the time that October comes around it will get a little busier with the whole retail thing (with Christmas coming, etc.)....so I want to be as available as I can and I would already have to take off the last weekend of October (our true anniversary).

God, I am so sorry for the babbling and if this doesn't make any sense :guilty:

Mel

That is a mighty quick pace there. Good work. Also be sure to listen to your foot and when it asks for some down time from running, do something else to work your CV system withoug stressing the foot. You might also consider running in 2 pairs of shoes by different manufacturers, switching off day by day, as this will slightly change your mechanics and may improve your foot problems. Most serious runners do this and swear by it.

Thanks for asking, but Martha and I won't be at the RFTT this October. We did enjoy the course last year, but the heat and humidity were too much for me. The first 5K was great, but the last 5K wasn't so great as I melted in mile 5. I'm super sensitive to hot and humid weather (must be those darn ancestors from the Netherlands, Scotland, and Norway), so I've probably run my last ever "summer weather" race. In my youth I could do it, but I'm no longer young and I need to face that reality.

So instead of traveling to Orlando, I am giving myself a birthday gift. Martha and I are going to Amsterdam for a long weekend at the end of September. This is a major milestone birthday number (how did that happen so quickly :confused3 ), so my gift to myself is walking around Amsterdam with my bride, including a soccer match on Sunday with the great Ajax of Amsterdam playing a Dutch first division rival, as well as the museums. With our only daughter 10 months from graduation, and getting a job and off our payroll, we plan to do a lot of this in the future, lots of fun and completely irresponsible.

Sara

Great work on the 17! Geez I'm only in the 7's right now. You're making me feel like a slacker. And what about that cruise? Details! Like you I never imagined I'd do the cruise thing, but it was really great.

Best to all

Craig

Ugh!! And double ugh!! Last weeks 10 mile walk went so well....yesterday I set my alarm early (6:30AM which is early for me on a day off!) all psyched for an 8 miler and then I stuck my head out the door. Ouch, it was stifling outside! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

I decided to use the TM instead. But first I threw a load of laundry in the wash so I would be using energy early in the day, and then my DD21 was leaving for a few days with her father so I spent some time talking her, and then I got a phone call....I finally got on the TM and managed a measly 1.4 miles before wimping out. I just could not get into it. I have no idea what the problem was, but I am going to try again today on the TM. I guess the good news is that the long term forecast calls for sunny and 80 on next Saturday!! I am just hoping this heat goes away before the Chicago Distance Classic on Aug 13th. It will be DH's first half and I want him to have fun, not melt into a puddle!

Anyway, thanks for listening to me whine.

Mel – If you go to Ohana’s after the half, maybe we will see each other. I would have to be pretty wiped out to miss Ohana’s. I would rent a wheelchair if I had to!!!! As for work, I work for a small computer software company that my mom started (family business). We have over 1000 user sites and this time of the year is our busiest, so we have weekend office hours. The person on the weekend shift also have the on-call beeper for the week. My position is Director of Sales, however in the many years I have been working here I have also done software support and training. I still fill in on these areas. Since we only have 10 employees, everyone gets on weekend rotation. How is that for a long summary!

I haven’t gotten in much running lately. I skipped my group on Thursday because of rain, but did 35 minutes on the treadmill. Friday I did 20 minutes of cross training and jogged ¾ mile before I had to run back to work. This weekend the heat and humidity is through the roof, plus I have been working. So that all equals to me being slacky. Our county fair starts this week and I always enter stuff. I have been frantically trying to finish a quilt and a couple outfits. The fair starts Tuesday, so that means my eating will be outrageously bad for you fair food!!! Yum!

I also had the same experience with the RFTT last year. NEVER again!!

That sounds like a perfect milestone birthday present.

Personally, I think 17 miles is a bit much 3 months out from my marathon, but I am closely following Jeff Galloway's interactive training program on active.com that was made available to all Marine Corps Marathon participants. As for the cruise, we've been on a few, with the last one being a 7-day in April. I have trips scheduled monthly from now until January, so the last thing I need to do is take another one out of the blue. However, the girls will love it and you only live once. We'll leave out of Miami for a 3 day Bahamas cruise with a side trip to Orlando post-cruise.

Pat - Sorry your run didn't turn out quite the way you had hoped. I hope the heat wave passes quickly and you get some quality time on the roads.

Colleen - I hope you're doing well and safe travels back to the States. I'm anxiously waiting for your race report.

Hi WISHers! :wave2:

I am back from my 3 week trip north of the border. We had a great time in Canada. It was pretty hot the whole time we were there. I don't think we had one day of rain the entire trip. It was really fun for my DD7 and DS9 to hang out with their cousins.

We flew into Calgary, Alberta on July 5th and I ran the Calgary Stampede half marathon. It started at 7:00 a.m., but it was already pretty hot. I really had a hard time during the race, I am not sure if it was because Calgary is at such a high elevation or I was still a little tired and stressed from my travels, but my time was the slowest of all 4 half marathons that I have done. I finished in 2:15:53. The first 6 miles were grueling, I almost thought about quitting because I just couldn't get into a groove and I has having trouble with my breathing. The second half of the race was much better, so I was happy I kept it together.

Some interesting observations about my run:

1. I was in the best shape of 4 half marathons, but this was my slowest.
(I think Bingham said there are so many other factors that come into play on race day, you just need to roll with them.)

2. I was a little stressed for a few days around the marathon weekend. I had no idea how those mental stresses can really affect my physical performance.

3. Although I thought this was my 'toughest' race, I felt the best the day after. I had no muscle stiffness or fatigue.

Here are a few pictures from the run. I had to laugh because although I am tall (6 feet) it looks like I am 6 ft 8 compared to all the shorter women running beside me. DH says it I look SO much taller because of the camber of the street. LOL

Sara, wow, 17 miles on the treadmill. That is awesome. This was a step-back week for me and I got in 9 miles, but next week I am up to 14. Oh and by the way, have a great time on your cruise! It sounds wonderful.

Sunny, I hope things are looking up for you. I need to read back and see how you are doing.

MelR, So have you signed up for your tri yet? Hope you are enjoying your PUSS.

Carrie, can't wait to hear about your race? I read you got together with solo and Heather. I bet you all had a great time. Would love to see pictures.

Rhonda, the dessert thing sounds great! I am not sure if I will still be around Sunday night, but if I am I am in!

I hope everyone has a good week!

Colleen

Colleen

You're absolutely correct, a million variables factor into your time in any race. You were likely fatigued from the travel and for those of us who regularly train at sea level, going up in altitude is really, really difficult. Throw in a hot day which significantly impacts your body, and your 2:15 is a nice result. In spite of all the work, you never really know what will happen between the start and the finish.

Or phrased differently, from a popular toast at The Adventurer's Club. "Some days you eat the bear, and some days the bear eats you. But always dress for the hunt."

Craig

I did my 6 mile wog this morning!
13:21
12:45
13:29
13:04
13:24
12:51
1:18:57

I thought that was decent for many reasons: lack of sleep from concert-going, drinking before, during & after said concert, and sleeping with a very "kicky" 3 year old!

Sorry for the quick post - I have to go list things on eBay to pay my way to the DL 1/2...

OK, I'll start with this. Hope solo does not mind, but he's outvoted.;) (I think it's a good pic of you anyway)

Coast Guard Race -

We arrived, just as the first of the 5k'ers were finishing. I think the winner had a 5:19 pace. :O

Oh, by the way. WHen dh picked up our packets, htey asked if teh bibs had teh right race. Dh says, "No, this says 5K AND 10K." Oh, that's right. You can do one, the other or both.

No, thanks. NOt with teh weather report.

So, anyway, we mulled around a bit. They had a dj by the start. He informed us that we needed to take our tags of teh bottom of our bibs and getting them into the drawing for door prizes by 10 am. OK, little math. We start at 9. Nope, our tags will NOT make it. Bummer.

Just before the start, he announces "Please make sure you kep hydrated. Make sure you stop and get water after teh race." ???? Please tell me there will be water stops!!! We did not bring our belt this time. Yikes.

We see teh "Goofy Guy". who ran teh Goofy last year adn runs on our bike path, but he did not see us.

Here's a pick of teh start, river leading to Lake MI to the right.

IMG_1965.jpg

Then, we headed to the Lake. Here's the light house. We started a bit fast (sub 10), so my pic is worse than usual. It was hazy too. Wayyy humid.

IMG_1968.jpg

IMG_1969.jpg

Then, up a VERY steep hill. Down hill, through woods up hill. At least it was shady n the woods, but htese hills are killer! DOwn teh big hill in the woods and woo hoo! There's water. Took a drink, got my neck and thigns were looking up. Still along way to go and I was sweating gettign ready, so I'm not feeilng overly confident.

Here's where it gets cool. We hit the CIty streets, there's little shade adn what's that? OMG! People have their sprinklers ont eh street or are standign out with their hoses! Bless them! I could have kissed evry one!

Into the downtown section. Getting really hot, no more homes, so no more sprinklers. We turn a corner for an out and back (yeah, love those) and I hear the girl behind me shouting really? with a worker. About a half mile later, there's a water stop (yeay!) adn then over a bridge. Thegirl who was shouting was right behind me talking to 2 guys. She says, I can't believe she told me we were at 4 miles. I reply, "you've got to be kidding!" We're just under 3.5 now." Poor girl was crushed.

OK, we turn the corner and there's Goofy Guy (on his way back of course). His firend was right in front of dh, so he did nto recognize him. I gave him the thumbs up and say Way to Go. he looks at me. ??? Then it clicks. Tee hee. I love confusing people.

Anyway, the out and back was sunny and killer. Dh took off a bit, so I talked to anothe rwoman who was complainng about the ehat and lack of weater stops. Now, for a small race, 3 for a 10K is not too bad, but it was killer out there. Really hard to set up exrtas at the last minute, though.

Hit the water station on the way back and there was a little kid with acup on the left. Not an easy task for me, but I took it from him. He was so cute! Ran back to mommy and said, "I did it!" She congratulated him That gave me a smile.

At one point, teh girl and guys right behind menoted that teh course had changed, likely becaus erunners were cut off last year. Must be why the results looked like everyone was pretty fast.

OK, about 1.5 miles to go and we turn onto the boardwalk along the river. SOrry, no pics. I was too tired. (Plus, I see this view all the time) The breeze was nice, though, and I had enough energy to look ar the Garmin screens. If I did the lst mile sub 13, then I could finish sub 12. Now, I really wanted to finish sub-11, but with the weather, I just wanted to finished more than worrying about pace so much.

OK, getting back to the road was a super steep hill. We crossed the street, and it was up again. I knew we had at least one more hill before the end. OK, make that 2 or 3. Hills with less than a mile stink! The last big one I took about a half a walk step without even realizing it. I was dying!
FInally, I crested the last hill and saw thwe finish line. Started to spped up a bit. What???? They put the finish on an uphill! That's just wrong!!!

IMG_1970.jpg

Had to slow a bit again, but I finished. I did my marathon pace too (11:44). OK, less than a quarter of the distance, but it was way hotter and way more humid!

After teh race, I taked to a few of teh racers around me. That was really cool. I found a friend from work, who is over 60 and finished in 56 min. :O He works outside, though, so I'm gonna' chalk it off to being a little better in teh heat. ;)

Found the Goofy Guy. He finished in 56 too, of course, he thougth the 5K was worse. SHould have know he'd do both.

I guzzled the water and atorade, thus keeping myself from over heating. I was dead when I go thome, though. So, it was to the shower and to bed. Unfortunately, we don't have central a/c, so my energy level was lacking yesterday.

However, I was not sick, I finished the race, and I may even do it mext year. Ifthe wether was better it really is a beautiful course! Heather- - Maybe you guys should come up for it next year. :D

Hey Carrie,

I tried to respond to your PM about the dessert party but your PM box is full. Empty it out and I'll try again :)

Hi everyone! I was away for a few days last week so I didn't get to keep up with last week's thread. Gonna try to keep up this week.

I had a decent weekend of workouts. I was away at the Jersey Shore, but still managed to get some training time in. Decided to switch things up a bit.

Besides a LOT of walking on the Wildwood Boardwalk (it's two miles long and I walked the whole thing each of the three days I was there), I did a 5K barefoot on the beach. I actually enjoyed it. Running on the sand and through the water made it not feel so hot. I did the first 2.75 miles in 38:06 (roughly 13.5 mpm). The last .35 miles took over 8 minutes. But I ran/walked that through the loose, deep sand. Definitely worked out my calf muscles!

Today, after I got home from the mini vacation, I went to the track and ran/walked 5 miles in the near 90 degree heat. Wanted to get used to running in the heat so I'll be ready for the DL half. Did it in 66 minutes (roughly a 13:20 pace). Not bad since it was so hot.

Mel - Great time! Hope your foot feels better. Mine is giving me a little trouble, but so far I've been able to work through it.

Sara - 17 miles on the treadmill?! You go girl! :woohoo: I think I would go crazy!

Kathy - Sorry the foot is still giving you trouble. I heard the ATM is a blast!

Colleen - Congrats on your race! Sorry, the time wasn't what you were hoping for. If I can ever finish a 1/2 in 2:15, I'll be jumping for joy! :Pinkbounc

Carrie - Congrats on your race. I'll agree with you- I HATE hills!

Terri

Hi Everyone,

Just a quickie from me -- I did do some running tonight on the threadmill.....5 miles all together, 1 mile walking and the other 4 running at a steady pace of 12.00 min/mil.

Can't remember if I wrote in any of my previous posts but my friend (the one that is doing Goofy with me) have determined that we will be running at a 12.00 or 13.00 min/mil pace.....Is that a good pace? Will I still have plenty of time to take pictures with my favorite characters? :confused3 .....I really hope so.

Well gotta go -- have to get up early tomorrow. Hope to check in throughout the week.....Have a great training week everyone! :goodvibes
