Kristi- Were you the one saying how much you love the bed? I think I'm seeing that now. Good thing you tested out the new jammies before race weekend though. Now you know they work, and can take them with you for the marathon weekend knowing you won't get any bed sores or anything from them. Great job training!!!

Oh my gosh, Dave! I never thought of that as cross training! :rotfl:
I woke up this morning, no bed sores or anything! :teeth:

Seriously, if I didn't have Chad to force me out of bed on race morning, I would probably shut off the alarm & go back to bed. I am the worst person in the world to wake up. I guess it's the 8 years of working at 4am - it gets to you. (that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it!)

Zack has his Sportsmania gym class at the Y this afternoon. I think I am going to put him in the day care room afterwards & get my 50 mins. w3/r2 in before weight watchers tonight. No PJ-trying-on for me this afternoon! :rotfl:

Hey! Where's everybody at!?

I'm keeping an eye out for you. Ha!

Hi Everyone-

This is a complete drive by as I just discovered that my browser has been skipping posts. I wonder how long I have been clueless?

Anyway, I am off to my group run. 8 miles tonight but I think I am gonna have to skip the beer and pizza after - I want to take it easy with this cold.
I am trying to flush the cold away by guzzling gallons of water. I decided to slow down around 4pm so that I don't have to take too many pit stops on the run. :)

Mark - Someone here calls the treadmill the "dreadmill" - I think its a fitting name! Welcome.

Take care everyone!

Cecilia

I am about to burst! I just got back from 4 miles on the Y track....

I know this doesn't mean much to all you runners - but for the first 2 miles I was doing w3/r2.
Then the asthma was kicking in a bit (forgot preventive hit of the albuterol beforehand, yet again  ), so I went scaled back to w3/r1.
And that didn't make a difference time-wise! :yay:

Hello fellow runners.

Today I ran 1/4 of the marathon, 10,550 meters, and hoped to carry my anticipated race pace of 10:30 per mile. It was cold and sunny today, and except for the wind it would have been ideal running weather.

I went through the first 5 miles at 10:13 per mile, with the first mile at 10 flat and each mile following at consistent pace. I felt great, running easy, and accelerated the last mile and a half, finishing in 66:43, 10:11 per mile, equivalent to a 4:27 marathon.

As I neared the finish I began to daydream. Finishing easily under 4:30 on January 7, comfortable every step and every mile. Finishing in glory. Getting the kiss and the roses from "Miss Disney Marathon." Visions of success and wonder filled my mind. Wonderful stuff.

Then I began to rationalize. Today I did that in the middle of training and I wasn't tired or straining at all. Certainly I could carry the same pace for 4 times the distance on race day, since having fresh legs and being surrounded by other runners makes it so much easier.

Then reality struck. If I go out that fast on race day I'm afraid 'll feel wonderful for about 15 miles, clicking along, and then BAM, the legs go, everything falls apart, and the last 11 miles are horrible. I'd so much love to go sub-4:30, but the downside is too big a chance to take.

So. . . back to the real world. I think I'll be able to average 10:30 per mile for the marathon, and I hope I have the good sense to start and end at the same pace, as opposed to last year when I started too fast and finished too slow. But then again, you get excited, the gun goes off, and ZOOOOOOM. So much for rational strategy  .

I know many of you are struggling right now with your training. I can't say I'm surprised given the many, many demands on your physical and emotional energy this time of year. It's easy to say, and hard to do, but in the last week before the race you need to think about yourselves. Training all year gets you almost ready, but in the last week you need to make yourself totally ready. Make sure you are physically and mentally fresh when the races start at 6 a.m. When your legs begin to blow during the race you'll need that mental freshness to keep moving.

When it gets bad your body will tell your mind to step off the course and stop. Don't listen. Keep going, keep your focus on the finish, and keep moving.

And don't get too discouraged. The hard work is behind you. The fun is coming very soon. Enjoy it all.

Craig

I'm afraid it's not just bad allergies anymore  I'm skipping my SR tonight because I've been taking Allegra D all day and the D tends to jack up my HR :sad1:

Craig...congrats on your run!

Kristi...do you have any idea what your pace is during your walking and running intervals? If I do w3/r2, I'm at about 13:30. Even with r4/W1, I can get to around 12:00mpm, but not always consistently. I just can't figure out why I'm so much slower than everyone else. :guilty:

Stephanie...congrats on your Garmin! What model did you get?

Someone mentioned the Garmin indoor signal strength. I have the 301 and it gets very lost and lonely inside...keeps looking for a signal. I did hear that the 205 and 305 are better about that though.

Vic...My...what big eye you have!

Cam...we have a Sienna...a green '04. We were at the Honda dealer yesterday getting new shoes for my Element. The Pilots are pretty cool! Glad that you're feeling better! You're not nearly a whiner...ABGs are a painful stick for anyone!

Lynne...great to see you around! I got some of my best stories from my psych rotation...nothing like bipolar karoake on Fridays at the VA.

Mark...brrr! What kind of music do you run to?

Lynnda...glad to see you're better too!

Bill...great pace!

We have a new running store...fit2run! It's pretty cool, but a bit pricey. They have a video TM to assess gait that's neat. And they carry LOTS of different brands of shoes! It's like utopia for those of us with a running shoe fetish! They even had several varieties of purple shoes

I'll pretty much listen to anything, but I really like 80's rock when I'm running. The harder the rock, the better, but only when I run. Normally, I'm a talk radio kind of guy.

Mark

mel--I got the 205 garmin--It actually got a satellite signal inside our house--So I played around a bit--but I decided to use the owner's manual as my reading material on our drive tomorrow--and then get to try it out on my run on Friday!

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

Well, I missed my x-training SWOG yesterday. I was busy at work during the pool's open swim times. So I ended up taking a rest day. I'll try to make it up tomorrow and SWOG instead of having a rest day Friday.

Cecilia- How was your run? And how's your cold. The cold has finally settled into our house, and everyone (including me) is fighting it now.

Kristi- Great 4 mile run! That is fantastic. I'm amazed at the consistency of your miles. Great job!

Craig- Fantastic run! You were cruising right along there. Thanks for the post and encouragement. I, for one, am fully embracing the taper to get my legs and my mind ready. It feels great to be able to rest up a bit - both physically and mentally. At this point I really need it.

Mel/Chimera- Sorry you are feeling sick. I think I was in the same boat as you and kept saying "oh, my sinuses are bothering me because my office is dry." Well, I don't think it's dry air that's bothering me anymore either. Get yourself better soon.

Kristi - That is a GREAT pace!! Way to go!! Be happy for you and don't worry if it's not as good as some others, unless you win, which I don't think any of ushere will, there will always be someone better. You know what is good fro you, though. Way to go!!!

Craig - great words as always. I'm still trying to figure out my starting pace (and convince dh it's a good one). It's so much more fun when you have a little left to blow it out at the end. Way to go on a great run!

Mel - :grouphug: Hope you're feeling better soon. If you need a pick-me-up, just think of all those purple shoes! :teeth:

DAve - Hope you're feeing better soon!!

Cam - Hope you're continuing to get better!

Dh picked up a 3-pack of airborne this week in preparation for the ohliday travels. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Did 40 minutes at Curves last night. It's tough to do that much using only the upper body equipment. Feeling it a bit today, but that's a good thing. My upper body needs it.

I am not sure what my pace is during the walking or running intervals. I just think I walk pretty fast. My mom who ran the entire WDW half last year, cannot keep up with my walking pace when we go out together. I sort of get ahead of her, then she runs a bit to catch up. And we repeat that much of the time we are out there.

Just as a guess, I think I walk in the 13-14 min. range. I'll have to try to pay attention to what the garmin says my walking pace is next time I am outside.

I wouldn't worry about being 'slow!' You are anything but slow! And I am certainly no speed demon. My hubby comes home from sub 9 min/mile runs and reminds me of that all the time! :teeth:

Good Morning Everyone-

Wow we sure have a lot of sick people around here. Maybe the virus is spreading through the computers. :lmao:

I had a great run last night. Well, that is said in hindsight actually. We had alot of new people running with us since training for the Georgia ING is really starting to go into high gear. It was fun to be one of the stronger runners that runs back to check on the slower runners.

I ran 8 miles. Well, I ran farther than that since I ran back to check on people a few times. I was tired the entire time and kept hoping that someone would decide that 8 miles was too far in all the wind. No such luck. It was also the fact that we ran the 8 miles in 1:20. No wonder we kept dropping the newer runners!

My cold is actually a little better today. Perhaps it is only going to be one of those mildly annoying colds instead of a full blown major misery of a cold.

Ok. Last night I ran with a veteran marathoner and he was full of advice. He said the number one mistake people make in marathons is starting out too fast. I tend to be all bouncy at the beginning of a run and I have to make myself slow down. He said that will be twice as hard at the start of the marathon but it is very very important. He told my mentor to buy me a leash!

This guy has run Disney several times and last year he helped several people get their Goofy medals. He said the runners that did the best were the ones that went super super slow on the 1/2. One girl had her picture taken with every charactor just to keep herself slow. Then at the marathon, they did a run/walk thing for the first 10 miles. All but one runner finished and he was the one that ran the half instead of run/walk or walking.

Well, I hope everyone is drinking lots of fluid and getting lots of rest. I know I am getting more and more excited. As my cold gets better and my energy comes back I am going to be bouncing off the walls!

Cecilia

HI Team, I am a bit of a failure this week. This is my worst week of training yet... I haven't done a thing since my 11 mile run on Saturday (and bowling on Sunday). I don't have the time with all the Holiday stuff. I feel just rotten and worried that I am not maintaining all my hard work.

Also, I am not sick, but have the feelings of something starting. I am downing the Vit.C, tho I forgot it this morning. I did eat an orange tho. I am also super exhausted, like wanting to sleep at my desk exhausted.

Work is just draining me this week, which totally suprises me since it never used to be this busy. I have major appointments scheduled right up to the time I leave for Disney. So many people want appointments with me, which is good, but my heart is not into work right now. I have other more important things to deal with... KWIM!!!!

Here is something funny Ron sent me. I thought we could get a kick out of it. Sorry so long, but I laughed my butt off...wouldn't that be great!

Thanks for the runner's life posts, I loved them all and I am guilty of many of them. I'll add one of my own:

During boring work meetings you take your pulse to get a true "at rest" heart rate.

2 weeks from today I'm on a plane!!

Craig

Mel-- Here's :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: to get better real soon!

All the PD you guys sent me worked! (That and the azithromycin.) I'm much better today. I still can't move much, but I got a lot of Christmas prep done yesteray. Phew!

I'm looking forward to a new year; 2006 was not my year!

Sunny

Morning all!!!

Well looky here... only a couple hundred or so posts to check up on! :teeth:

Bad 20 miler folks--- Seriously don't stress about it. I had a huge flame-out on my 20 last year... to the point that at the very end I was in actual pain. But I figured that if nothing else, and that happened again, I could walk the 6 miles from there. Come race day, I split 20 miles 8 minutes faster than I did at home. You'll be fine.

Howard-- Looks like you and I are on the same plan here. I think I'm doing my last back-to-back this weekend and then keeping my fingers crossed for the next couple of weeks.

Sunny-- :grouphug: Hope you are on the mend!

Judy-- That's WONDERFUL news about Mist. You know, there are lots of little kids all over the country totally jealous of you right now because you got a pony for Christmas. :teeth:

Mark-- :welcome:

I wanted to thank everyone for their well wishes with our National Championship run. The whole experience is so surreal. As I was standing on the sidelines near the end of the game, I got to thinking about the marathon, oddly enough. Both events, for me anyway, have the distinction of having moments where you are part of something so much bigger than yourself. There's not many moments in life where you feel like strangers are as close to you as your best friends--- but that's part of the thrill of the marathon for me.

I will do my final back-to-back this weekend, and then it's (really) taper time for me. Since I'm off work until after I get back from WDW  I shouldn't have any trouble getting them in. I've got two Christmas parties in the next three days, one of which we're hosting--- so it's cooking and cleaning madness around here. I'm not heading home for the holidays this year but I've got plenty of "adoptive" family to take good care of me.... but who knew how much work that would be!! :teeth:

T-minus 16 and 17 days, right?? :bitelip:
Happy training!
Kevin :earsboy:

Sunny- I think the Goofy medal will be your good luck charm for 2007. ;) So happy to hear that the antibiotic is working. Take care of yourself and recover soon. :wizard:

Lynne- So good to have you back and posting! We have missed you. Can't wait to see you soon. I was talking about you just last week to a client who does Ironman triathlons. I was bragging about how great you are.

Kristi- Did you really go to the pharmacy in your PJ's? :rotfl:

Okay, I am going to get in a LR this weekend. No more sitting on the sidelines and watching everyone else train. popcorn:: I am going to pull out my MfM, get inspired, and start mentally preparing for the marathon.

Cam- It might be a good time to post your packing list again for everyone. It is time to start packing!
