Wk Of Dec 15 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Good morning everyone.

No training to report. However, I did come across this article reference iPods and racing.

iPod Conflict

This would make a good thread all by it's self.

I'm a walker, I start in the back, crank the tunes on my iPod and go. I'm not in anyones way. In a situation like corral placement it is a good idea to wait till the crowds are thinned out before you turn on the tunes. When I start in the back I still have chip time to see how I actually did and I am continually passing people the entire race. That is more satisfying than being continually passed by faster people running.

In walk races I don't wear the iPod since I'm competing to win and I have my pain to keep be distracted.

Being a good citizen with your iPod is just like being a good citizen as a walker or a slower runner, keep out of everyone's way. The biggest hazzard is not the tunes but the people who walk 3,4,5 abreast and refuse to move for faster people to pass.

I still like the idea of doing it in a rickshaw with a beer.:)

Thought I would pop in and say "Hi!" and wish everyone happy end of training/start of taper.

I thought I was going to get active on the board, but life just isn't permitting it. It's hardly permitting me to train, and my motivation isn't quite there, not to mention a back injury.

so...I've gone from signed up for the Goofy and 5K, to just the marathon and 5K, to just the 1/2 marathon and 5K, and for all I know, by January, I may just be doing the 5K. (but hopefully still the half) I just can't risk any worse injury by being stupid and trying the full on inadequate training, so I'm ok with that. Hopefully, I will have a great triathlon season starting in the spring.

Keep up the good work, everyone!

Hello All

It's getting close, and I'd so sick of the training I'm darned glad for it (that's my version of Pollyanna's glad game, this training isn't fun anymore but it's nearly over, of course the race is a blast).

Craig

Thank you, thank you- I am so pushed by Life/Work/Training right now. I'm glad to know that training can seriously bite at this point, but the race is still a blast. Good to hear (see?)! I'm so busy that it's killing me to make time for running, but I get so crazy and stressed when I miss a run, yada yada... everyone knows this drill.

Oh, and the city decided now would be a good time to replace the sewer lines that run along my street, so they have construction people and equipment everywhere. It makes me a little nervous to go running out of my house (not all, but some of the construction guys look a little shady). And based on the fact that they just dropped a port-a-potty off in the street in front of my house, I'm guessing their estimated time of completion is... NEVER.:scared1:

Cecilia- I might be your half pacer. I ran my last half in about 2:10, so maybe 10 minute miles, but I'd like to slow down so I can survive the next day. But there is a fine line between slowing you down enough and slowing you down too much- you'd have to promise me that if I'm cramping your style you'll take off without looking back- no guilt! ;) Oh, and I'm planning on using the whole picture taking thing to keep me slow too!

As for the iPod thing, in the half I just ran, I used my iPod (and would have died from sheer boredom without it). I kept the volume low. I thought the group of 4-5 men running/walking in a pack at my pace were much more annoying than anybody with headphones (they were running just fast enough that they'd pass me, but then they'd walk and I'd pass their huge group, and it went on and on...)

Yes it would make a good thread!

Evil Panda...may I call you evil for short?

I am in total agreement with you! Every year at WDW there are people who are running beside each other and will not move...or they stop for their walk break and do not move to the side...many times, I have almost tripped b/c of this....or even stop to tie their shoe in the middle of the race path!

I think is is just being aware of your surroundings....if everyone who wore an Ipod/MP3 were like my husband there would not be an issue. He has it turned as background music. He is aware of everything going on around him...and can even hold a conversation. But, that is not the case. People turn on the music so loud I can hear it...and have no idea that they are in the way.

So maybe the issue is not really the music, but just being aware...some people are unaware and have no music...maybe they are talking and not paying attention...maybe they are in their own painful world of running and at the next step may fall out...whatever the case...being aware is the key.

I have never used an Ipod in a marathon...I have only used it in 1 1/2 marathon, but the music just got in my way. Now, that said, I do think it would have helped me through this past marathon...so I would not have dwelt on my pain and being sick. At the same time I have close friends who could not get through a marathon or a LR without it.....I personally think on a LR on the open road/trails it is dangerous. You cannot hear what is going on around you....I have a friend who wears just 1 ear bud, but that still impedes hearing...as I came up on her and yelled her name...she did not hear me even though I was right upon her.

So that is my soap box...I know many will disagree, but that is OK..I can only tell of my experience. Just stay aware and safe...

I realize my husband has four - strike that - three reasons for not moving to Florida right now, but I'd like to say, I have none. Mist is originally from Texas and Georgia and I'm sure she'd be perfectly happy to move back to a warmer climate. :rolleyes1

Last night I got home, got out of the car to get the mail, and could not get going again up the driveway. Our driveway is 941' long (Yes, exactly. I know because I measured it.) It's got a slight incline on the way in, the levels out, then goes down a hill to the house. I had to back out on the road when there was no traffic, then zoom in, up to the gate, get out to unlock and open the gate, and saw the UPS man had put two packages over the fence. I couldn't reach them since they either slid on the ice or the wind blew them, so I had to get on my hands and knees and crawl - yes in my work clothes :headache: to get the packages and drag them back across the ice, still on my knees. Then I put them in the car and headed down the hill - only to have my car go completely out of control! I turned the wheel into the skid but it did nothing. I was sliding down the hill - pretty darn fast! - until I hit a snow bank which then sent me flying in the opposite direction. Holy moly! I almost hit the house! I put the car in the garage and swore I was not going anywhere again until spring! :scared:

Of course, today I am at work. Charlie put so much ice melt on the hill that I was able to get up it. Today is a little warmer and the sun is on it so it better %^!#@% melt before I get home!

Also, let me just add to this that these conditions are THE most difficult for taking care of my girls. I'm dragging hay and shavings up to the barn, hauling and dumping frozen water buckets, it's slippery and cold and dark all the time when I am trying to do chores. I'm constantly worried that I am going to slid and pull a muscle or worse. :sad2:

This is the worst possible time for me to be trying to focus on the most intense part of my training. Therefore I am going to seriously reconsider the 2009 Half. If they make the Minnie a Half, that just might be my one big event. January training just doesn't work for me. I guess I got really really lucky last year since the first significant snowfall we had wasn't until January 10th. This year I've done most of my L/Rs on the TM and I really don't like it. Plus after dealing the with snow and the resulting difficulties, I'm soooo tired. Getting up at 4:15am to get on the TM is just about the last thing I feel like doing. I am really not putting my best effort into training and I am not happy about that. Not at all. :guilty:

I've been reading thru the relevant parts of MFM, sort of as a refresher. It cracked me up last night to read what he has to say about tapering. It says it is the closest you will ever come to being possessed. Makes me think John Bingham has spent some time around here. :lmao:

Craig - I passed my the high school track this morning, which was my last hope for getting outside. They haven't touched it. I guess they won't bother with school being out and all. great. Just great. That means 13 on the TM Saturday. :guilty:

Oh Helen, get dancin' will ya? OMG 50 sounds positively balmy to me right now! :dance3:

Panda -

AMEN!!

I think you hit the nail on the head here, Christa. I agree that being aware is the biggest key.

Let's face it, if you are listening to an mp3 player, you are probably running by yourself. Folks running by themselves tend to be easier to maneuver around than the groups of people walking and/or running side by side. I have never had a complaint about another runner due to the fact that they were using an mp3. I see no reason why they should be banned during races...the point made about safety (not hearing an automobile) is valid but a simple waiver takes care of that issue...and besides, I'm not sure I'd want to do a race where I had to worry about vehicles in intersections.

I personally use one for training runs as well as my 5k and 10k races. When I run the half and full marathons, I'm with my buddy (Hi Amy!) and therefore would rather talk to her than listen to tunes.

Anyway, it also seems to me that people have forgotten the first basic rule of the road...

Stay on the right unless you are passing someone.

This allows faster runners/walkers to easily get by. It should be talked about much more than the mp3 debate IMO. It's a simple rule that is very easy to remember and follow.

Of course you have to remember too that it is WDW, not the Boston Marathon...there are many people out there to simply beat the sweepers, looking for any advantage they can get. I think if everyone would just be more aware of their surroundings, and follow the simple stay to the right rule, everyone would have a more enjoyable racing experience.

Whew...sorry to ramble (a sporadic one at that)...but I wanted to chime in on the subject...

Now back to your regularly scheduled events thread :goodvibes:

Stephanie - Remember..we do this for fun! Ha Ha! You will do great at WDW! PD for your little one and you who has to take care of him.

Unfortunately, my main training issue right now is that it's NOT fun! I've now realized that I've pushed myself too hard this year. When Disney is completed, that will be my 3rd marathon in less than a year (with the one this past March being my 1st ever) Running has turned into more of a chore for me than the love it used to be. I now wake up on Sunday mornings dreading going out. DH and I talked the other night, and I'm going to take a break from any long distance races (greater than 10K) until at least fall '08. Maybe by then my love for the sport will come back. Right now, though, if I can just make it one more week of training, I'll be happy.

Oh, and as an aside--DH bought a Wii off Ebay this weekend--do you think that Wii sports counts as Xtraining????

Hi Everyone-

I got my run in today. Whew.

Christa - I like what you said about being aware. For me, however, its about curtesy. I hardly notice the ipods on runners that are running alone and on the side. Its the runner thats just shoved past me or the one I had to run behind for 3 minutes because they didn't get over or that stops to change songs right in front of me that I notice has an ipod on. I have to restrain myself from grabbing the ear plug cord and yanking. By all means, wear your ipod, but be aware enough that you can still show curtesy to other runners! Just don't hit the BMZ and throw your headphones away. :rolleyes1

The 3 and 4 a breast people annoy me too. I would run through them, pushing as I ran, except that I am usually in my TNT purple. (ok, actually, I just fantasize about doing that) However, If they are wearing purple then you can bet I am going to say something to them. And if I can figure out what chapter they are from, I will report the chapter. Some people just don't know any better, but if they trained with TNT, then they should have been told not to do that.

Judy - :scared1: I am glad you are okay! I hate driving in ice and snow. That's why I live in Georgia. It hasn't snowed once since I moved here.

Jen - I would love to run the half with you! That would be awesome. However, I have seen your times and I seriously doubt I will be taking off without you. The idea is to take it very easy. Hard to do in a race.

I had a great r/w today!:goodvibes Not so much time-wise, but a great workout anyway.

I finished 8.4 miles in 2:03:48. Time was approximately 15:00 mpm pace, not great but 4 miles of my route was uphill. I definitely got my hill workouts in today. For those familiar with Philly, or the USPro Cycling Championships, think Manayunk Wall, cause my route took me through Manayunk and up the hills. Two sections of the hills were very steep. One section took me just over 12 minutes to go .4 miles. I stopped 1/2 way up just to catch my breath.

But I finished and I felt great afterward. :thumbsup2 I'm a little stiff now, but not much. I really thought I'd be exhausted, but I wasn't. So even though the time wasn't great, I got the steps in and felt great!

Terri

Laurie - Hope the IT feels better!

Stephanie - Aww - I hope your ds feels better. :wizard: for your workouts.

Mel - 50 degrees would be perfect!

Helen - Please do your cool dance! Cool on race day and warm afterwards.

ironz - sorry you won't be going Goofy. I totally understand about LTO, though. Good luck with whatever race you do.

Judy - glad you weren't hurt. Be careful out there.

Dave (Panda) - You crack me up!:rotfl2:

1st...I know what you mean! At the end of my marathon training and when I lined up at the starting line for Charlotte, marathon, I felt the same way. Running was no fun for me. Now that is over, I am starting to relook at my goals and embrace the funness again. The love will come back...
2nd...YES Wii sports is xtraining...I would wait until after the marathon to do it...I hurt my shoulder/arm last year when we got one for Xmas.

I Cleaned my bike really good today then lubed it up (no comments Evil Panda in your taper mode;) ) hooked it to the trainer and rode an hour on a HARD setting (No comments Evil ;) ) Yes it was a perfect day to ride outside, but no childcare (and DDs had friends over). The friends thought I was crazy until DD7 said, oh my mommy just loves her bike, it is her 3rd child....so I have 2 wonderful DDs and a DB (dear bike).:rotfl:

Cecilia & Scott, OK, that is what I meant...but you guys said it better! Thanks!

TEK224...won't be doing the full Goofy, but I will be there, and should make it through the half! So I am looking forward to that...and later this year, the FL 70.3 triathlon.

what is LTO? I am guessing an acronym for why life is in the way. :)

When are you venturing back to triathlon? :goodvibes

WTG Terri. I rode the Manayunk Wall fairly often the year I lived in Philly but never did it on foot.

iPod- I'll train w/ one particularly inside on the dreadmill or track but prefer not to race w/ it. Not because it affects my situational awareness but because I'd rather talk to people if they're around. Triathlon is much more hard core about enforcing the no iPod issue because it really becomes about safety when racing on open roads especially during the bike.

Good training everyone and happy taper!

Ooooh, pressure re temperatures. All I'm going to say is last two years I did Disney it was cold - ran Gold Coast half marathon two years ago, 100 year storm two days before hand (flooding, roads being washed away etc) and since we moved to 'drought ridden' Australia, it has not stopped raining - and we do refer to Tim as Hurricane Timmy (so perhaps it is him you should all be pleading with!!!)

Wading in on the ipod argument - I agree, I'll take one person using an ipod sensibly than runners 2-3 abreast. Although, can I just mention that if you see me plodding along on the left, it's because that's the way we run here - slower runners on the left (or is it right, see now I'm all confused again), I'm going to do my best to remember though!!! But beware foreign types on the course (anyone with a Union Jack, hat with corks, dressed as a large baguette etc) we know not what we do.

Tim is still working on installing speakers on my Tigger ears though - I got criticised for saying I 'need' my ipod when I run on another thread, but while some people like to chat (which I loathe when I'm racing, will chat all day on a training run, but on a course, I will chat for a minute or two but then, I 'vant to be alone') and some poeple need Gu or lucky socks to get them round, I need music to motivate me- so, check the ears for beats.....!!!! Helen

ironz - I'm thinking about signing up for the SheRocks tri here in Philly in Aug.
It's a sprint distance, which is probably how I should have started my tri career, instead of with a 1/2 IM.

I'm just tryig to decide if I can really see myself jumping into the Schuylkill River to do the swim. Kinda grosses me out. I'll have to decide soon though. I heard last year it filled up quickly.

You seem to have all the fun now. Since Craig and Martha seem to be hogging their snow ;) maybe you can send us some of yours instead. We will gladly take it. It would provide several hours of fun watching people try to figure out what to do with it on the ground. In addition our kids would love it.

If you won't, maybe you can tape your adventures next time and send it to Disney. That sounds like it could be a fun ride or neat addition to Test Track.

Hope you are able to get some running in outside. So how many laps would it take on a 941' driveway to get all your miles in. :rolleyes1

Terri...I contemplated the SheRocks last year and I'm thinking about it again this year. I'm really worried about the swim..I *can* swim...did swim team as a kid, etc....but I'm not a super strong swimmer so I'd need lots of time training for it. I could use my lake but I'm just not sure I'm confident with that aspect. How did you train for the swim or are you a natural? :)

Just checking in today. I need some PD. I have to have my final round of testing from my "illness" today with a colonoscopy. I lost my dad to colon cancer almost exactly 5 years ago and I am having a lot of anxiety today. No matter how much I tell myself I am healthy, eat right and do everything I am supposed to, I am still scared. So, send good thoughts today for me!!! :flower3:

Oh and anyone who wants snow, we are due for 10 more inches overnight :scared1: which was only supposed to be 4. Kids are looking forward to a snow day right before Christmas break. Me, not so much.

And, Judy, you need some Yak Traks just for chores. They help out a lot when I have to check the cow's water on their beaten path. For goodness sake, watch your step and keep it between the snow banks (this is what DH tells me when I leave for the gym during a storm).

Happy training, more happy taper madness too....it kept my mind occupied yesterday...especially the Icy Hot in the shorts. That one still kills me. :lmao:

All we could say was "tell me again why we live here."
I say almost the same thing all the time - "tell me again why we don't live in Florida?" :sad2:
It's technically not even winter yet! :scared1: I see lots of overnights in town for work this season. :sad2:

I did get in 3 miles yesterday and it felt good. I am just defeated at this point. Too much to do, not enough time. And training seems to get a backseat to everything else alot lately. I think I am just going to give up any aspirations of a sub-3 half and just plain finish without being swept. Anything above that is the icing on the cake at this point.

Training for a race during this time of year is horrid. I am with Judy, this may be my last Jan. half. I'd still be there to cheer Chad on though. Maybe I could just do the WDW 5k each year while Chad does Goofy (that would also solve our childcare issues). In any case, this time of year sucks for training and I can't see myself doing it again.

OT - My niece Molly had her meeting with the CEO from Germany on Friday....
and they are going to make her sneaker!!!!:yay:
The next step is getting an attorney to represent Molly and start processing the patent. :yay:
They are looking at a June 2009 release!
(for those that weren't around earlier this year - Molly was on the American Inventor tv show with her idea for a musical sneaker. She didn't get past the first tv round, but a shoe company saw her and now they want her idea!)

Lisa - lots of  &:wizard:

Hi guys! Life's been kinda crazy around here!

Quick update. I went to chiro last Tuesday to find out I have LOTS of issues. NO running until this weekend. Hopefully I'll get the good word tomorrow and can get back out there this weekend.

Shoes...Went to Fleet Feet. Tried on MORE (like 10-12 pairs) of shoes and left w/ 2. Hopefully one of them will work. Since I've not been running, I don't know about the numbness yet. I thought it was the shoes, but after testing out a new pair, they still went numb. That's what led me the chiro.

The weather here is CRAZY in NC! It was in the upper 70s last week and this week is it's in the upper 40s/low 50s! :confused3

Here is some :wizard: for everyone nursing injuries!!! We are on the countdown for marathon weekend!!! I'm so excited!

Stacie

OK! No one needs to have WDW race nightmares now...b/c I had enough for everyone last night. I am not even running the dang race! :confused3
Basicly this is what happened...
Krista, Judy, Both Daves, Steve, Amy, Lynne, Scott...and a few others I cannot remember right now came to pick me up at my grandmothers house (in Tenn:confused3 ). But it was just right down the road from WDW!:confused3 :confused3 I could not find my shoes, water belt, or gels....and it was 5:45am. Finally I find my shoes and ditch everything else.
WWDave...is driving:scared1:  and stops at McDonalds to get breakfast. THis seems normal to everyone..and now it is 5 min b/4 race time.
We eat and go to the race...it has started but Krista says it will be OK...we have a chip that records our "real" time....I don't ever remember starting the race, but the whole night was filled with panic for me. I would wake up and go back to sleep..the dream would start back up right where I left it.
WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT?!?
