Wk of Aug 5--WISH Walking/Running Club

Unfortunately, DD has a band competition that weekend and refuses to give it up, so it looks like we're going to miss ToT. I keep threatening to go without her, but I get really angry looks. :rolleyes1 She also has a competition in Havelock the next Saturday and won't be home till around 2am, so I probably won't go with them since I'm running Raleigh the next morning, so I don't think I have any bargaining chips on this one!

Jackie
Boo! I'm pretty sure I'm doing the Raleigh half. I haven't signed up, but I'm planning on it right now.

Hi all!

January Friday WISH Team meet I think will probably be at Pop. It really did work out well and I think most everyone wanted to go back. You do not have to eat there, but please stop by to visit if you can.

I went out tonight only b/c DH wanted to. We went for 50 minutes in the heat/humidity but not 100 degrees, just felt hot. DH did 2.82 miles for 17:45 pace and I did 3.54 for 14:09 pace. Gotta hydrate some and relax a bit.

Sleep well.

Hey team! Had a meeting with a personal trainer tonight (I got 2 free sessions when I joined my gym...this was the second) and did some great upper body stuff that totally turned my arms to jello.:faint: Then I hopped on the TM for 40 minutes at 5.5 mph, but ended up pushing it to 50 minutes because I was in such a groove with my iPod :cool1: Woohoo, 4.58 miles! I did feel a little bit like I was pushing myself (I think I was traveling more at single words/choppy sentences speed rather than conversational), but I felt like I could have kept going for a while if I'd had any sort of goo or sportsdrink to take in (my muscles and lungs were feeling pretty good, but my head was starting to feel a bit spacey).

Question for the more experienced! How do you practice the run/walk technique on a treadmill? I ended up maintaining a steady pace this time, since I'm not really sure how you adjust the speed to account for walk breaks. How much do you guys dial down the speed?

Everyone who's suffering heat indexes like we are here, stay cool! Everyone else...I'm totally jealous of your rain and cooler weather! :) Can we come practice with you guys?

A quick post. Apparently Vic sent his cold down this way and I caught it. Training is on hold a little since it has totally wiped me out for some reason. I am hoping I can recover in time for my race next weekend. It does make it interesting when the kids want to play and I just want to sleep. I think Lynnda is secretly enjoying it since she doesn't get a break when she is sick.;)

Bill

Sorry to hear that, my brutha.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

  Hello Team

Sorry I have been a little lost!! There is NOOO Way I can catch up with everyone but first to Jackie and everyone else out there with the sweltering heat: I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!! :scared1: :scared1:

I did run outside tonight in the 105 heat index and it was HORRIBLE!!, but I did do 4 and just reminded myself -- CONSTANTLY -- that it was ok to run slower or I was going to die!!

So far this week -- 4 on Monday and 4 today, so in my book that is a good week!!

Moon When I do the treadmill and I slow down to walk I try to keep it at 4.5 (everyone tells me I normally walk very fast so :confused3 ) If you are running at 5.5, I would say 4 - 4.5 to walk is good.

Have a good night everyone!!

angie

Did Lynne also mention YOU doing another order?

Very funny. Depends on when we put a second order in if we do though as I'm in Hawaii until Aug 25 then off to Tacoma WA for a month except the weekend in Madison WI for Ironman Moo and the after Tacoma, I'm off to San Antonio TX for a month. Then we're going to the World for a week to culminate w/ the ToT 13K. So I'll be back home around the 1st of Nov, probably do a rotation at SUNY Upstate that month which is an easy commute from my Mom's.

Training for IM Moo is going pretty well. Haven't had any knee pain since early July so I'll actually go into this race in better shape physically than I did Lake Placid. Was quite undertrained for that one as I had been having knee issues for a couple months and hadn't ridden long since late May. Training on Oahu is a challenge due to traffic but there is a pool right here at Tripler and plenty of places to swim open water:) Planning on flying over to the Big Island in 1.5 weeks and training that weekend on the Ironman World Championship(also just referred to as Kona) course.

Take care everyone.
Lynne

A quick stop here to report my training for today. According to HH's plan, I was to do 30 min. walk. The route I took got me back home in 31:13. I covered 1.7 miles. Not good enough yet to beat the sweepers.

What I read on this plan is to focus on walking for the designated time and not yet worrying about the distance. That is so hard for me, as I want to see the goal and meet it. But, a lot of the route I did tonight was small hilly inclines, so I guess the time/distance wasn't to bad.

But now I'm beat, so I'm going to bed.

G'night all!

Terri

Geez! I guess I should've mentioned that my ADR for dinner on that Friday night is for around 6:30--so DH and I will be at POP first;) Then we gotta go have dinner with the IL's--they already think we're crazy for the marathoning bit, so I could only imagine their faces when I say "Hey, we're having dinner w/a bunch of folks I met on the internet!":rotfl: So, to save myself the trouble, we'll do the double duty--but notice how WISHers came before family!:thumbsup2

Ok, training update! I will be the first to admit that for the first 3 weeks or so of my deployment I was a total lump, and ate a whole lot. Something about food being comfort... The 127 degree temperatures and loads of dust in the air was a good excuse too, but then I got on a running schedule, consisting of all treadmill, all the time. Here's how I did! # = miles, X = rest
2 x 2 x 4 x x, 8 mile week
2.5 x 2.5 x 5 x x, 10 mile week
3 x 3 x 6 x x, 12 mile week
3 x 3 x 3 6 x, 15 mile week
3.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 7 x, 17.5 mile week
4 x 4 x x x x, 8 mile week
x x x x x x x, 0 mile week :(

As you can see towards the end I fell off the bandwagon, as I contracted some sort of flu initially, and then it was my last week and I was in transit home so I was more celebratory than anything else.

My grand plan now is to hop back on in time for the DL 1/2, probably just picking up where I left off. I was doing a 10mpm slow recovery run on Tue, a 9mpm "pace" workout of the same distance on Thur, that same 9mpm distance on Sat, and then for endurance a 10mpm long run of twice the distance on Sun. I'm trying to get used to doubling up on the weekends as the Goofy is on the eventual horizon. So probably finish up this week with 4 x 4 8, then try 4.5 length runs with a 9 on 8/18, 5 length runs with a 10 on 8/25, and then probably a bunch of 3's culminating with the half on 9/3.

Still unknown when I'll be heading back to the "sandbox" so although I'm registered for ToT, will have to make sure I'll be here before making big plans for that one...

Good morning WISH Team.

Terri, walking on grass you will not have good times. Grass effects walking even more than running. However walking or running on grass, like doing hills, builds strength.

These country state troppers here just have no respect for the beauty of nature. A pretty "YARC" princess, cruising in her stang with the top down on a warm summer day. WISH hat with pony tail flying. Can you believe he gave her a ticket for speeding! An outrage!:rolleyes1

This will be our third day in a row of temps above a 100 degrees. So I'm heading out to walk early, although it's already 80 degrees and will be 90 by the time I'm done. I might wuss to the treadmill and do intervals on it, not really decided yet. I do love exercising outside so much more than inside on the treadmill.

Everyone have a great day and remember the heat is part of life and builds mental toughness, just be carefull to stay hydrated and take it slower than normal.

Dave:hippie:

Renee - yes the did clean there room, actually they share a room and one is very neat and tidy, and the other is not. Sometimes I feel bad for the one. Oh well, it builds character.

I walked yesterday for 1.5 miles, but my legs felt like they were wearing cement shoes. It was starting to rain, so I headed home. I did get an hour of yoga last Tuesday, but the teacher was a sub and she treated it like an aerobics class. She was even wearing a microphone and the music was so loud. Oh well.

Plan for today is to walk 2 miles. The I need to go pick up my csa box and cook some veggies. I have one kiddo crying at my feet saying please hold me.

Gotta go!
Maggie

Good morning team!!!

Just wanted to share some news before I get to work.

I just read on the Scotia Marathon website (the 1/2 I am doing Sept 30th) it will be televised live and on the internet....wahooo I am so excited. I will be wearing my lime green WISH shirt so I might stand out a bit.....:lmao:

Moonie -- I can't say that I'm more experienced, and I definitely can't get anywhere near your speed/pace/endurance but I can tell you I do almost all my training on a TM at the gym. It has a button called "Interval Training" -- I set a jog speed of 4.2 mph and a run speed of 5.0 mph. You then just push that button to change from one speed to the other. I like that I control when the speed changes, rather than some TMs that automatically alternate. The other good thing about this is it asks for your weight first thing (NOT that that is a good thing for me  ) so that it accurately tracks your calorie burn at both speeds. Oh, and one more thing. If I toggle it to run at 5.0 but want to try to go faster, I can hit the speed/pace button and it increases 1/10 of a mile mph pace at a time. I hope that helps!

A quick stop here to report my training for today. According to HH's plan, I was to do 30 min. walk. The route I took got me back home in 31:13. I covered 1.7 miles. Not good enough yet to beat the sweepers.

Terri -- That pace is great, even without considering all you've been through and the training conditions. You have come so far from that person standing at the side of the road at mile 23 of the marathon in January and every time I think of how far you got in your quest for Goofy and what you were suffering, I remember why you are one of my heroes. Now, don't overdo it!

Matt -- It is so awesome to see you here! We will really miss seeing you (and all our other WISH teammates) at DL, but we'll be with you in spirit! :thumbsup2

Maggie -- How DO you do it? :goodvibes

Lynne -- So nice to see you here! Kathy, Lynne (and maybe, Erin? ;) ) -- Thank you so much for undertaking and executing the hat/visor project! They are awesome! Can't wait to send Kevin's along to him next week! You girls ROCK! :cool1: :cloud9:

No training to report here. I'm worried about going into CDC having had no time to do anything since Tuesday night, but am hoping all the walking through airports tomorrow and around Chicago tomorrow and Saturday will at least keep the muscles loose. ;)

Oh, one last thing. I just remembered I did get in some XT last night. After a 2 hour  band parents meeting, I lifted a fork many times eating :cake: Yes, my sweeties surprised me with a (we're-all-finally-in-one-place) birthday cake last night. Where is that "YUM" smiley?

Have a great day, all! In case I don't get back, have great LRs this weekend!

Good morning WISH team! No training to report. :sad2: DH has 2 herniated discs in his neck and has to have surgery tomorrow. It came on so suddenly. The pain only started 4 weeks ago. :confused3 He will be in the hospital a couple of days and then has at least 6 to 12 weeks of recovery ahead of him. Looks like I will be doing Goofy without him. At least with all of my WISH teammates around me I know that I will not be alone.

Matt- Welcome back from the "sandbox"! We missed you!

Lynne & Kathy- Thank you so much for all of your hard work on the WISH hats. I love them! I originally got 2- one for me and one for DH. Now, I want to keep both for me. :rolleyes1 They are great! Thanks! :cloud9:

Stephanie- We have all been through the strange looks and shaking heads of friends and family who cannot believe that we have met and made friends via the internet. DH was skeptical the first year we had a WISH team meet for the marathon (2005). Then, he met everyone and we made friends IRL and he has been 100% supportive ever since. My mom was skeptical at first, but then she met all my WISH friends at the DL 1/2 last year, and she still asks how everyone is doing. Once your in-laws meet us and see our team spirit, they will understand. We may not see each other everyday IRL, but we know each other. We share our hopes, our dreams, our successes, our defeats, and our stonkers. We are friends and we are a team.

Sorry to all that I missed. Have a great day everyone!

:moped: Just a quick drive-by! I wussed out last night and didn't run....I was really tired! I was able to see a treadmill that dh's friend was selling. It is a NICE one, and would run about $1500 new (but this is five years old with only 200 miles on it) It was in great shape and much nicer than the one I have. We ended up buying it for $300. I think it was a great deal!:woohoo:

I WILL run today! It is also pump class tonight.

Nancy: Did you get your 4 miles in?

Cam: Yeah for CAKE!!!:woohoo:

Beth

Stephanie - I am going to have to end up doing the same thing for the Pop meet, for the exact same reason!!

Not a whole lot going on right now. So I'll report my training from yesterday. Once again I am on the treadmill until this weather gets better. I mean 90 at 9am? WTH? The sad part is that's the "REAL" temp, the heat index is about 10 degrees higher than that!! So yesterday I ran 4 miles in 35:36, averages to about a 8:54 mile. I still think it's harder running on the treadmill, or heck.... maybe it's just harder running on MY treadmill!! Michael ran a 5k on the treadmill yesterday too!! He's so excited that he can actually finish the distance, now every week we'll just try to build up his speed so that he doesn't get swept! Do they even have sweepers in the 5k at WDW? Right now he averages about a 15 minute mile, and that's his running pace!! I laugh, but I can't tell you how proud of him I am for working so hard to get this done. He only runs 1 day a week now, because he has 2 days that are for football practice and one game a week. He's working so hard and I am so proud of him!!

Today I have another 3 miles on tap, then Saturday I have 6, or at least that's the schedule, but I think I am going to be doing some more tweaking of my training schedule. So far this thing hasn't made it more than 2 weeks without being changed!! You think I would eventually just leave it alone!

Dana

Dana, the training schedule is ok to change. Sometimes LTO and it has to happen. The big thing is to keep training for sure!

Bill, WISHing you are feeling better today.

Beth, congrats on the good TM deal. WISHing that you get great use out of it.

Lynne, is it great to hear from you. Glad you are able to fit in training. That's what keeps things sane I'm thinking.

Heather, lots of PD and prayers for everyone as Kevin goes through surgery tomorrow.

Cam, don't worry. You'll do fine in CDC. It will loosen quickly. The big thing is to enjoy the journey and the rest will happen.

Terri, your pace is fine. Don't worry, it will all come back in time and you will be strong. Right now focus on easing into it so you don't injure.

Matt, it IS good that you are posting here once again. WISHing that you won't be playing in the "sandbox" during ToT, rather playing with us.

I'm getting ready to take my Mom to Cleve. Clinic for her preadm testing. I've got to grab a book.

I've updated the WISH Team Calendar. Please check and make sure your dates are included.

Heather -- I will keep Kevin in my prayers!

Beth -- :woohoo: on the new toy!!!! How cool is that? Sounds like a great deal, too and a win-win situation for the friend who was probably using it as a clothes rack! ;)

Dana -- Congratulations to Michael! And that 15:00 pace is way ahead of the sweepers even for the half and full marathons! :thumbsup2 He will be GREAT! And just think of how his speed and endurance are likely to improve between now and January! :cool1: I can tell you are outrageously proud of him. :cloud9:

Lily -- I hope all goes smoothly for Mom. :goodvibes Is surgery set for the 23rd? (I'm sorry my memory is so bad.) I hope you have a good book. I just started "Devil in the White City" which takes place in Chicago during the years leading up to and during the World's Fair in the late 1880s early 1890s, in case you are looking for something fascinating to read.

Nancy: I'll think about the pedicure, but I'm still so embarassed to have anyone see them. Plus I know the workers at the nail salon will discuss how ugly my feet are .......and I won't be able to understand a single word of it! :scared1:

I have trouble even understanding them when they are talking in English.

Sometimes I'm so clueless.......please fill me in when the WISH meet is.

I think we are twins separated at birth as I am just as clueless, but see that the WISH meet is for Jan at POP food court.

Jeanne and my children all think we are crazy with having DIS friends. So Jean do you think your children will be jumping all over the opportunity to meet more DIS friends?

Good morning WISH Team.

Everyone have a great day and remember the heat is part of life and builds mental toughness, just be carefull to stay hydrated and take it slower than normal.

Dave:hippie:

I'm taking it so slow, that I can't even get out the door. Sorry that Ericka got a ticket.

Kim

I hope Creativebeth sees this. That is really cool

Beth--- Good deal on the TM, now what will be your excuse for not running. I missed you at stretch last night. I plan to be at pump class tonight so will see you there.

Yesterday, I did 6 miles on the TM. I had to split it up because of stretch class. 3.5 miles before and 2.5 after stretch. It is suppose to get cooler here so hopefully can start to walk again outside. I am running out of books to read.

It is so great to read how everyones training is going. Also to have support when you had a bad day.

You all are the best.

Nancy
