Wk of Aug 5--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey Renee, How often do I check my pace? Too often... seriously, checking my pace really depends. Depends on how I'm feeling, if I feel horrible I'm usually checking it more often, if I'm feeling good I totally forget about it, if I like the song I'm listening to I don't check it at all either. Usually, I take a glance at my Garmin about every mile. I try to notice my mile splits. If I look at it more often that that, I don't really trust it. It fluctuates so much in between the mile. It gets blocked by trees, and then catches up, etc. So I usually look at it every mile or so.
One of my fears is that if I got a Garmin I'd be obsessively monitoring it! I think I may just spend some more time doing some (boring) track running to try to get the feel of different paces. I really want to be able to start the marathon at a comfortable pace, knowing that I will be able to complete the whole thing feeling pretty good. I need to break my habit of starting out too fast!

Hi, everyone! Well, DS14 is home and settled in. We arrived at our hotel Thursday night close to midnight and still got up early Friday to do a leisurely walk. There was nowhere to run. The sidewalks were in terrible shape and there was no shoulder to count on most of the time and if there was, there were cars parked. But, we walked about 40 minutes (2 huge hills included) -- just enough to justify french toast for my birthday breakfast. We spent a lot of time walking around the very hilly camp Friday (we won't talk about the ice cream for desserrt!), then another 40 minute walk Saturday (to get coffee, of all things! ;) ). Nothing today. But we are home and doing laundry, unpacking, getting ready for percussion camp (starts tomorrow).

Glad to see all the great miles everyone is getting in!

Craig -- so glad to hear you were feeling well enough to run Thursday night!

Angie -- very scary stuff -- changing a tire in the rain. God bless that man who stopped to help you. :goodvibes

Helen -- Hope you are feeling better! pixiedust:

Kevin -- so nice to "see" you here! Don't work too hard.

Moon -- welcome! :welcome:

Sorry to all I've missed. :grouphug:

Okay, off to update the August exercise challenge and I have to start figuring out two weeks worth of lunches for band camp. More later.

:bday: Happy Belated Birthday Cam!!!!party: :cake: :rockband:

Happy birthday Cam! :wizard:

Dave about the Garmin, I read about the pace being incorrect, but from what I'm taking from your post it corrects itself? So the end average pace should be fairly accurate? I'm trying to justify a Garmin in addition to my Nike+. :confused3

I haven't heard back on my request to have a WISH day at WDW. But you know what, remember we asked them to change the time limit for the TOT and they listened. So I an't giving up just yet.
Dave:hippie:

It's a nice idea, but I'm betting it won't fly. Like someone else mentioned, if they do it for us, they'll have to do it for all groups participating in marathon weekend. I think TnT is 'officially' linked to WDW for the marathon and they don't seem to get any special treatment (correct me if I'm wrong those who've run with TnT).

Personally, it wouldn't work for my family group...DD14 won't be caught dead in Safety green and DD4's clothing is subject to her mood of the moment ;) .

If you have any other cool ideas, you might want to just post it up to the group first before sending out an email on behalf of everyone. That would give folks a chance to decide if it's something they'd want to be involved in or would want the team to be involved in. :)

Mel—Funny about the Mission Impossible music! :) I know what you mean about trying to run around CSR. We stayed there last year and I ended up running around the outer road loop since the paths were so confusing and congested. Hope your foot is better for next weekend.

Terri—glad you made it back safely. 2536 miles?? Wow, that makes me tired just saying that.

WWDave—hope your walk went well today. I know what you mean about the heat and humidity. I told Krista that I am now convinced that the heat of summer is my least favorite season of the year.

Dave—way to go on the 12 miler! Nice pace, I’m impressed with you picking it up that quickly for the second half. Is it 8000 degrees up in your neck of the country, too? By the way, I keep meaning to tell you: EVERYONE who comes over to our place keeps asking us where we got the Fulkerson wine. I always tell them we made it in our winery in the basement.

Kathy—wow, those are great pictures of Lynne! She is amazing. Is she recovering ok?

Stephanie—so sorry about the stonker. Don’t you just hate those kind of runs? The important question is: did you ever make it to PF Changs?? :)

Vic—hope you feel better soon.

Jen—way to go finishing the run. Nothing better than a taper week, huh!

Cam—Happy Birthday!! As if you really need to put in 40 minutes to justify French toast on your birthday, right? :)

Hey, who ordered all this heat?? I can’t remember what it’s like to run without dripping sweat after mile 1. That ok, this builds character, right? Right?? My weekend runs actually did go well. I did 7 yesterday and then 15 today. Legs feel pretty good considering.

Well Cam, I too, got to eat French toast for my birthday this weekend. My wornderful cook of a wife made french toast loaf (you know, like the kind at the Main Street Bakery) for my birthday breakfast yesterday morning. It was goooo-ood.

Speaking of Krista, she just now walked in from her 12 miler, and she told me she hates running and can’t figure out why we do this (don’t tell her I said this, but maybe if she didn’t wait till 3:00 in the afternoon scorching heat to start the run…. :) ).

Ok, so Krista and I are really going to be in Chicago next weekend for the CDC. We found an adequate kennel for Hines this weekend, which was one of the main reasons we didn’t think we’d be there. I need to jump over to the CDC thread to figure out where/when everyone is meeting up. That is IF you’ll still have us in the group. :)

I know I missed a lot of people, so HI to everyone else. Hope you guys are all having a great weekend.

Steve

Did my two-mile walk today. Started out fine, but slowed in the 2nd mile. Finished in 30:07. Still ahead of the sweepers, but I've got a long way to go.
I think I get a little paranoid during the walks, because everytime I feel a twinge, I start wondering if I did something to the foot again or if it's normal soreness. Could be scar tissue braking up or something? Since I never felt the 1st rupture, I don't know what it should feel like. It was sore in the 2nd mile, but I kept going and it's not sore now. :confused3

Dave - Great job on the LR!:thumbsup2

Kathy - The pics of Lynne are awesome! How is she feeling?

Stephanie - sorry about the stonker. I'm sure the next run will be better.

Vic - Hope you feel better soon. I really hate summer colds.

Jen - Hope things work out for you.

Cam & Steve - Happy Belated Birthdays! (I got you a cake, and what's a party without the drink?! ;)
:bday: :cake: party: :drinking1

Excuse me, Mr. Know-It-All Pants, I didn't start at 3:00! I started at 2:00. ;) :)

Stephen just informed me that I'm not allowed to post a real post to everyone, since we have to plan Chicago, so I'll be back later!!!

Cam--Happy Birthday!!!!!!

Shan, I don't know if 2 can use the Garmin if you are going to download and keep track I'm not sure if you can set up a separate folder for each download. Maybe someone else knows.

Steve and Krista, Yay for CDC! Great news. Happy belated b-day too.

Terri, I'm glad to hear you are getting in those steps. I'd be a bit timid too and wondering about everything. I WISH that it is nothing but getting back to it. Please don't over-do the miles at first. I know you won't, but I just HAD to say it.

Cam, welcome back! Good that you were at least able to get in some walk time and birthday celebration.

Mel, welcome back!

I realized that I forgot to post up that I did get in my 5 miles, but it was this morning instead of yesterday. Perfect day, I took it easy. Had an overall 15:15 pace so CDC will work for me. I met up with one of the trail runners that we always exchange hellos and keep on going. We were at the end and he slowed to introduce himself and we chatted up as he walked/wogged in the last steps with me. I was amazed he would walk it in. He's usually always running. He even told me he scored a first place recently in a 5k, doesn't like the longer distances and can't really do them. He gave me cudos for getting in the distance as I was awestruck over his speed/placement. Friendly people out there.

I finally have time to post. Lynnda and Billy got me a puzzle for my birthday last Thursday and you would think she knows by now that I will get involved in it and not stop until it is finished. :rolleyes1 Especially when it looks like it will beat me. I finally finished it and now I have to get caught up on everything. Billy did bake me a cake and was very proud of how it was decorated.

Training wise, I went out Saturday morning and did 5.55 with a 11:54 pace. I was hoping for 10 miles or so but the humidity and a pain in my leg cut it short. Then I got to mow the yard so I had a little cross training in there as well. I am hoping to get fit to actually do the 5k in a couple of weeks. I have learned that the humidity is killing me and I have to make sure to drink enough before I go out.

Cam and Steve - Happy birthday as well. Glad to hear that the days were good. I didn't get French Toast but then again I usually leave before everyone wakes up.

Terri - Glad you made it back safely. Hope the pain in your foot isn't anything major and just getting used to excercising again.

Mel - Hope you are having fun at Disney. I don't think I could pay attention to a conference if I went there. I would want to be out playing somewhere. I also don't think some people in this house would let me go alone.

WWDave - Good luck with dealing with Disney. Like Mel, I have a feeling it won't work since there are alot of groups that come to do the races and with all the people it may not be an actual advantage. But it may give them something to think about for future races.

MSDave - Great job on the run. Those times are very impressive.

Kim - Hope the celebration was fun and you were able to get a walk in before hand.

Moon - As I think people have already said, I use the Garmin Forerunner 301. I love it but definately don't use all the functions that are available.

Stephanie - Sorry the run was bad. It is all the bad runs that make the good ones so much more enjoyable though. It also makes it easier for the race days. Glad to hear you had a fun night out though.

Vic - Hope you get over your cold soon. You don't have to feel obligated to share it with us though. ;) I am having a hard enough time trying to keep our household well at the time.

Jen - Hope you feel better soon but congrats on getting out and doing the run in the not so great conditions.

Beth - Good luck on your run tonight. Hope you are able to keep up with the group.

Renee - Glad you are pain free after the LR. Hope it continues for the rest of the week.

Shan - Hope you feel better as well. Great job on the 5 miles, that is a great time especially when you are feeling bad.

Steve - Glad that your runs went well this weekend. Glad you were able to find a place for your "baby" and are able to make it to Chicago.

Kristi - After hearing about the Faith Hill incident last week, you might have to be careful at some of your concerts. ;)

Hope everyone has a good week and can get their planned training in.

Bill

Hi everyone,

As many of you know, I am almost at the conclusion of my MBA program. In order to graduate I am required to complete a research project in my area that includes a survey.

If you have a chance please check out the link below that includes a survey. I'd really really really appreciate it if anyone could complete the survey or pass it on to anyone they know that would be willing to.

You don't need to provide any actual work data or identify yourself in anyway. Thanks you sooooo much for your time!

:bday: Happy Belated Birthday Steve :cake:

Looks like we should've had a big WISH team

Especially since football's finally back! :woohoo: I don't know if the website where I did the girly fantasy football is going this year, so I may be looking for another free online fantasy league if y'all have any suggestions.

Happy birthday Bill! :wizard:

Wow, alot of WISH birthdays! :cheer2:

Minnie, sorry the survey didn't apply to me. Good luck!

Happy Birthday, Bill and Steve! How cool! I almost share a birthday with 2 of my favorite peeps! :thumbsup2
Steve -- I am so glad your sweet wife made you french toast loaf. Now, that is love!!!
Bill -- I'm sorry you didn't get french toast, but a puzzle is a very cool gift!!! And, that means you didn't have to go a katrillion miles to burn off your breakfast! ;)

Thank you for all the good WISHes everyone!

Congrats, Lily, and everyone who got their miles in -- even if SOME of us were silly enough to do it in the mid-day heat! Krista -- do I have to go all MOM on you????

I am SOOOO exhausted, but both kids are under the same roof for the first time in 3 weeks (DD having survived her first 2 hour each direction trip to visit her Godmother) and I think I MIGHT be able to sleep tonight!

:bday: Bill, Cam & Steve!! DH's:love: birthday was on 8/3.

SWDave Glad to see you're visiting the MCM thread:thumbsup2 . I do want another pair of WISH socks if you're going to place another order in the future. Nice job on the 12 miles:cool1:

Cam - Gorgeous picture of you & Howard from the cruise.

Lily - Thanks for keeping the WISH calendar up-to-date:woohoo: .

Angie - Really scary about the flat tire. Glad it all turned out okay and that you and Bobby are still running.

Sunny - So glad to see you again!!

Made my final payment on the 10-day September WDW trip so I am counting down the days:cheer2: It's a step back for me this week in the MCM training and I am looking forward to the slight break.

Happy training to all this week and best of luck to all of our WISH'ers headed to Chicago this week for CDC:banana: .

I think I caught my cold from our 6 month old grandson. Guess my "baby cold" antibodies aren't up to par. :rotfl:

Hey, Happy belated birthday! :)

Thanks everyone who tipped me off to the Garmin! No luck at any of the stores I checked today, although I did find a bunch of ebay listings...:rolleyes1 doubt I'll have much luck landing one of those without getting outbid though, so for the time being I guess I'll try the online mapping technique. Thanks guys!
