Wk of Aug 3 - WISH Walking/Running Club

:mic: A bit Off Topic, but some of these may help when facing a rough training day or a hard day at work.

Just thought I would share some quotes from Randy Pausch's book "The Last Lecture"

The brick walls are there for a reason. They're not there to keep us out. The brickwalls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.

I'll take an earnest person over a hip person every time, because hip is short term. Earnest is long-term.

I've always believed that if you took one-tenth the energy you put into complaining and applied it to solving the problem, you'd be surprised by how well things can work out.

Jon Snoddy from Disney Imagineering told Randy, "If you wait long enough, people will surprise and impress you." "Almost everybody has a good side. Just keep waiting. It will come out."

One of the Cliches that Randy liked, "Whether you think you can or can't, you're right."

- Just some thoughts for today -

Tracy

Happy Birthday Cam!!!!!

Happy Birthday Steve!!!!

:bday: Cam!

:bday: Stephen!

Jeff - DD17, her BF, and I enjoyed a virtual Dole Whip today. Thanks for the picture!

Terri
- Hope you're feeling better.

Tracy - Hooray for the 5lbs! :cheer2:

AFM - Did a 10 mile scavenger hunt/LR with our group yesterday that was actually 11.5 miles. Rather than collecting items, we photograph the group at various locations along the way. Out of 10 pace groups, we ended in a 3-way tie for the win, thanks in part to my awesome photography. The entire course was hills. I think it's time for another massage, since I could barely walk when we were done. Of course, I think the hills may have had something to do with it... Did I mention that the course was hilly?

Recovered last night by taking DD and her friend to see "Mamma Mia" the movie, preceded by a stop at Ben & Jerry's (mint chocolate chunk, for those who are curious!). Felt much better (I was worried about sitting still for 2 hours, but the ibuprofen I took beforehand may have helped a little!)

Good early morning everyone. I am back from my race/anniversary weekend!!

Happy late birthday Cam and Stephen!! :flower3:

It has only been a few days and already catching up seems like an impossibility!! You guys fly on this thread!

I ran the Beach to Beacon race in Cape Elizabeth, Maine on Saturday. I have to highly recommend this race to anyone close by. It is extremely well organized and run. There are water stops every mile. Fan support is supreme and the finish area is great too. Lots of food and vendors and free stuff. No bling but you do get to run with the elites (or at least follow them)!! I finished the 6.2 miles in 1:00:19 which is about 20 seconds over my goal time that I set but when you get a shoelace untied at water stop 2 by some kind gentleman trying to bust over for some water (apparently he really needed it) you tend to lose time. Such is life. I know in my heart I would have finished in under an hour without the unexpected stop so all is good in my world! :thumbsup2 It was overcast, a little breezy, very foggy but still humid and sticky. I thanked every fan on the roadside who was standing with their hose misting us as we passed. It was a great bonus!!

I guess that's it for now. I hope everyone is well and gearing up for their marathon/half marathon training. You all must be getting very excited. I know I am for ToT in 2 months and what 3 weeks now!!!! :rolleyes1 (but who's counting?)

Lisa and Jackie: CONGRATS on your races!!! I like the scavenger hunt one. Maybe we should try this during one of the WDW events???

Happy Birthday to STEPHEN!!

Lisa...Yay for great race!!! :cool1:

Karen...welcome back!

Leana...So glad your 20miler went well!

Terri..Hope you are feeling better!

Stephanie...Take care in that heat! That is insane!

Tracy...Yay for the 5lb loss!!! Thanks for those quotes. I like the point about the brick wall! I think we have all seen those!

For me... I got a new bike! yay! After C25K on Sunday, We got in a 8.8 miles bike ride on our new bikes! Yay. My booty is a little sore, but hopefully it will adjust. We could have started off w/a few miles, but no...DH and I just decided to get on and ride...Ended up riding around town for a total of 8.8 miles. It took us 50 min, which for those biking folks is pretty much like a crawl. Hopefully over time our speed will increase!

Here's a pic for your viewing pleasure of new bike. It's a Trek FX 7.2 WSD.

Happy belated b-day to Cam, Steve adn BIll!!! :thumbsup2 Hope you all had great days!

Well, I have confirmation that last week was a total dud on teh trainign front. Was doing laundry adn went to do my last load. Howver, My running clothes basket only had 1 pair of socks. I did walk about 3 miles in tehm gettign to/from fire works, but that's pretty sad. Need ot get in teh groove ths week. Of course, it'll be 90 degrees (remeber, I can run in 20 degrees, so that's really hot for me). Ugh.

Lisa Yeah for your race. Sounds like you ran it well, and your time was great--you can claim victory!

Stacie Love the bike and the fish. Did you pick the little guy out just for his markings?

Stephanie 114! Yikes! Stay indoors or in the pool and take care of yourself. And of course ice cream is a known warm weather training tool. ;)

Jeff Do you ever have a downbeat / unhappy day in paradise?

Tracy :wave2:

Debra New flavor to try (ice cream, of course!) Grand Hotel Cafe Latte (produced by Meijer--mascarpone flavored ice cream with chocolate coffee swirl and cafe latte bits)

Went for a swim today. Hard to believe but it was too crowded at 5:30 am. A big guy kept drifting over in my way and swamping me. Oh well, I suppose that's what it feels like at a triathlon (multiply by 100!)

Maura

Happy Belated B-day Cam!!
Happy B-day Stephen!

Tracy - yay on the 5 lbs!

Stacie - congrats on the new bike!

Lisa - sounds like you had a good time at the race. We've talked about going to Maine sometime, might have to time it during that run.

To everyone - HELLO!

This weekend got in a 5 miler in pretty good time. Had one mile slower than intended due to a deer hoping around on the path. There were people coming the other way so it couldn't figure out which way to go. I slowed up then stopped and so did the other folks then it found a spot in the trees to run thru, into the shallow water and swam to other side. Don't mind a slower mile for something like that.

Got a bunch of t storms rolling thru here this morning. This week is full taper for Sunday's half so going to have to find other things to do in the eve. Might actually get some work done on the scrapbook pages I've been meaning to do since the Minnie.:rolleyes1

Leana - WTG on the great 21 miler! Added on a mile:worship: ...look at you go!
Jeff - The Dole Plantation! I loved that place! Mmmmm...pineapple...YUM!
Tracy - Great job on the 5 lbs! :woohoo: I have such a hard time with that...I just love food (& ice cream) way too much!
Jackie - That scavenger hunt sounds like so much fun! I'll have to let my coach in on that idea!
Stacie - Nice wheels! Oohhh...love the MM fish!

Did time trials with the team this weekend. Only ended up shaving off 5 seconds from my previous time, but I think that's because I started out way too fast (for me) and then had to slow way down for the last 1/2 mile. Oh well, there's always next time!

Happy birthday Stephen.

Stacie, love the hidden Mickey on your fish.

Maura, nope, can't say I do. :lmao:

Follow up to my Sunday afternoon of relaxing. Nope, Princess #2 wouldn't have any of it. She insisted we go to the driving range to hit golf balls and putt. So off into the heat we went to whack a couple of buckets.

:bday: to Cam and Stephen!

Great job on your run Leana! A great 20-miler isn't in my vocabulary quite yet.

Jeff - Beautiful photos! I think your mission is to make us all jealous!

Terri - I hope you are feeling better.

Tracy - Great job on the 5 pounds! You go! And thanks for the great quotes. I just ordered that book myself.

Jackie - Were there, perhaps, a few hills on your course? Take it easy!

Lisa - The Beach to Beacon sounds great. We'll be staying in Cape Elizabeth for Thanksgiving (my in-laws live in Scarborough).

Stacie - Nice bike! Nice fish!

Carrie - I'm sure this week will be better for you and you'll have lots more dirty socks in the laundry next week!

And "hello" to anyone I missed along the way!

As for me:
Well, even though I've been posting here and there, I feel like I've been AWOL for about 10 days. I've been in a funk. I think mostly it has to do with my job. While I love my school and the people I work with, I'm getting a little burned out. With this economy, it is not the most wonderful time to be the Admissions Director at a private school! I figured out in a meeting a few weeks ago that I have been trying to do everything on my own. Add on top of that my tendency to take it personally any time a family leaves the school (I'm trying to work on that one!), and I have really not enjoyed going to work each day.

Right now, I'm not sure if I need to fix the job or leave the job! I have a general plan in place to stay through next June, but sometimes I am not sure if I can last that long. In the meantime, I am trying to build my business, but it is not the peachiest time to start as a travel agent either!

Sorry if I'm whining a little bit! I'm feeling much better today since my terrific long run yesterday (amazing how much that helps!), and I just need to take it one day at a time while a sort out the big picture.

So - I did my first seven-miler yesterday (right now all my long runs are "firsts"), and it was absolutely awesome! I really flew through the last 3 miles, and felt great both during and afterward. I'm really looking forward to my eight miler next weekend. It really does amaze me that I am able to do this!

Anyway, thanks for listening! I'll try to stay out of a funk and keep up better with the thread!

Oh - and I finally updated my blog with some cool pictures of Maine!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEPHEN!
:cool1: :bday: :cake: :drinking1 pixiedust:

And yay for being able to enjoy many, many years in which Carter will let you share in the afterglow of his birthday celebrations! ;)

Bill: *Cough, cough.* Um, I knew it was your birthday, Bill, and forgot to wish you a big Happy Birthday here on the weekly thread. Ooops. So,

HAPPY (BELATED) BIRTHDAY, BILL!

:bday: party: :cake: :drinking1

You can never have too much of a celebration, you know?!

Howard: I have no doubts that you'll finish strong and maybe set a couple of PRs with your Dopey weekend and other races. Side note: I saw that you did a 6/12 miler this weekend. Is that Goofy training or just coincidence? Know that I'll be here, and in Disney, to cheer you on (groupie status pending). Maybe I need to invest in a cowbell, huh? Speaking of which, can you or anyone else explain to me the whole cowbell thing?

Racey Tracy: WTG with this weekend's training--excellent as usual. And you did go out really late for you and the FL weather. You've got stamina, you do! And woo hoo for the DL 1/2 being a family meet with your Aunt, as well. I take it you don't like to fly? P.S. WTG ON YOUR 5 POUNDS WEIGHT LOSS!! :cheer2: (It's worth the caps!)

Allyson: Got the itch for some WISH gear, huh? It IS addictive!

Mel: I love how you discovered goatherd just isn't a career option for you. And your storytelling was just perfect--I could see and hear it all in my head. Now I'm looking forward to Jeff's sound effects and the less minimalist version. :lmao:

Leana: Yay for your 21 miler. I hope you had good thoughts during the run for yourself, as well as from us. :goodvibes Now, about that ice cream place that is worth stopping a bike ride for....

Maura: Congrats on your marathon (biking or otherwise, 26.2 is a long way)! :thumbsup2 And good news--you got your first clipped in fall over with, and without damage. No trauma then. And it sounds like it was a better time than the overcrowding the pool. I think I'd feel very claustrophic in the swim portion of a tri.

Forsooth, the Shakespeare reading was long but lusty. Well worth the 2 hours. My favorite phrase, used to describe a bracelet given to the heroine by her lover: "manacle of love." :lmao: Oh, and I didn't realize Meijer produced such decadent ice-cream flavors. Grand Hotel Cafe Latte/mascarpone. :cloud9: That just may be a good substitute for my iced latte.

Karen: Welcome back. It's good to hear you're determined to get in gear for the Philly Distance Run. I hear that's going to be quite a party! :woohoo: I hope your LTO created many pleasant memories, at least.

Aloha Jeff: Love the photo-essay. Made me hungry for, what else, Dole Whip! I was talking with DOOD about your month of 16 milers, 18 milers, etc. How did you come up with that strategy, if you don't mind me asking? Centered around races you want to do? (Excellent pace, btw.) Does whacking golf balls help one with working out aggression? Just wondering. :rolleyes1

Terri: I hope you're feeling better. I'm going to channel Cecilia here (who gave me such great advice in the past) and ask you if you're sure it isn't dehydration in this weather. That causes my headaches, joint aches, etc. sometimes.

Craig: Jeff does taunt us sometimes, doesn't he? :lmao:

Stephanie: Ice cream, pool? That sounds about as close to Jeff's paradise as I get. But a heat index of 114? Wow--how do you survive it? I think being outdoors even for a few minutes would make me wilt.

Jackie: A 10 miler-scavenger hunt sounds like loads of fun, and what a way to think about things other than hill work. (Are you doing EE?) You deserve a regular massage appointment, I think, as part of your recovery plan. And of course you know I'm curious about the ice-cream flavor of the day; I find mint chocolate chunk is much better than mint chocolate chip--better balance of flavors. Ice cream and ibuprofen.... And how did you like Mamma Mia!?

Lisa: Great race day for you, and Beacon to Beach 10K sounds like a great race to do in general. The spectators sounds supportive and thoughtful. What's this I hear about ToT? :listen: There's a race in October? :rotfl2:

Stacie: Your Trek is a snazzy looking bike. And I think your inaugral bike-riding time is just fine--even though you will get faster. Next up, bike-riding shorts, accessories, and race-entry fees?

Carrie: There are just times when the laundry takes precedence over the running. There just are. DOOD doesn't think so, which is why I do the laundry, but I'm with you. This week, though, is back to training for you. (Followed by ice cream because 90 degrees is ho-ot--just follow Stephanie's strategy.)

Liz: Great story about your 5 miler and the deer. You just can't have those kinds of experiences on a TM. (At least not in real life. My hallucinations are my business. :rolleyes1) I do hope you get some happy scrapbooking time in this week--seems like a perfect plan for your taper.

MB Michelle: Congrats on shaving 5 seconds off your time. That's great! :woohoo: (And for realizing the start too fast/end too slow thing, too.) You're going to take the castle by storm!

Kira: I'm so sorry to hear you're having a rough time with your current job and your future career. Like you said, the economy is affecting all sorts of industries and positions. I'm sending some PD to you in hopes that you feel better about your career and that you can make decisions that will help you through this period and your job transition, whenever that comes. pixiedust: I do have to say, though, that it's nice knowing that your running is helping you deal with everything. :yay: Here's to your first 7 miler and all the other firsts to come!

As for me: Spent yesterday, my rest day, getting lost with DOOD on a trail walk (7+ miles and 2 1/2 hours), taking a long nap in the afternoon, then going to an evening, outdoor performance of Cymbeline. It's a long, sprawling Shakespeare play, and the production was part of Pgh's Robot 250 festival. I didn't quite get the connection between the play and the robot festival because as far as I could tell, there were no robots. Two printers, yes, a fog machine, and twinkling strands of Christmas lights, but no robots. Does a printer count as a robot? :confused3 I mean, some of the acting was pretty mechanical...maybe they were droids? :lmao: I think someone with a much stronger science background than I have should explain it to me.

In other trivial news, provided by Nielsen....You probably know that vanilla and chocolate are the favorite ice-cream flavors in America. Here, in order, are the next 7:
  1. Butter Pecan
  2. Mint Chocolate Chip (I assume chunk counts in this category ;) )
  3. Neapolitan
  4. Rocky Road
  5. Cookies & Cream
  6. Chocolate Chip
  7. Strawberry

And what's YOUR fave?

Really??? I sooo love Choc Chip Cookie Dough!!! It's not on the list. I guess it's not as popular as I thought.

What's your fave???

For regular ice cream flavors...give me a GOOD chocolate ice cream, any day. For special flavors....I was rather fond of Ben & Jerry's "From Russia with Buzz" (coffee with chocolate and coffee and chocolate....), but it was a limited time flavor.

Maura
(Who will "settle" for a Dole Whip in 1 week's time at WDW!)

Yummm, ice cream....

Standard fave is a true vanilla with good caramel sauce (otherwise how do you eat vanilla). Lately been going to Cold Stone where you can custom mix flavor and add ins so it's been the vanilla or sweet cream with caramel and Heath Bar pieces.

Maura - so glad you're ok settling for a Dole Whip. :lmao:
