...has anyone taken advantage of the Segway Epcot tour? We have been thinking about this for one of our trips at the end of the year. How far in advance would be wise to call for a ressie? Also, must we do this through MS, or must we do it through CRO?

You might want to search for "segway" and see what pops up. I remember a few postings by people who've already done this. They were very enthusiastic.

This link should help and answer your questions...

"Around the World at Epcot -- on a Segway!

A brand new tour is being introduced in Epcot. Beginning February 14, 2004, you'll be able to travel Around the World at Epcot on a Segway, those futuristic-looking upright transportation devices on which you sometimes see Cast Members zipping around Epcot. The tour, which will last two hours, will be offered daily at 8:45 a.m. The first hour of the tour will teach safety rules and allow you to practice riding the Segway, while the second hour will be a tour around World Showcase before it officially opens to visitors.

Cost for the new tour is $80 (park admission is NOT included).
Some restrictions apply: Minimum age is 16 (guardian must sign a waiver for ages 16 and 17), maximum weight for participants is 250 pounds, and expectant mothers and persons with special needs may not participate due to safety concerns.

A 15 percent discount will be available for AAA and Disney Vacation Club members, as well as Annual Passholders, Disney VISA cardholders, and Disney Cast Members. A photo ID will be required at the time of the tour. To book this new tour, call (407) WDW-TOUR. And if you take it (it sounds like fun!), let us know what you think!"

We did the Segway tour on May 4th. I'd been on a Segway previously, but I wasn't sure how my wife would do... She loved it!

We had a ball and are booked October 18th on our next trip. There are six of us (DISBoard people) already booked for that date.

Search my posts for a detailed account of our May tour...

Ya gotta do it!

My husband has been fascinated by the Segways for several years, so I got him this tour for a birthday gift during our April trip. He loved it! The high points were:
-- great instructors. The training session was very well done.
-- the group got LOTS of attention from the other Epcot guests as they drove to and from the WS, so he felt very special (plus, it's great advertising for the tour)
-- he felt like an 'insider' getting to see the behind-the-scenes work being done at WS before it opened at 11 AM
-- it was just plain fun!

He got a special pin, and was only the 4th group to get it, I believe. As I recall, he did talk about not realizing that he'd have to be standing for so long -- sounds obvious, but just something to be aware of.

He took his camera, and one of the instructors took a couple pictures of him which came out fantastic.

There was a thread on DIS at the end of April and several people said that the tour was sold out for a couple of the weeks in May, so it sounded like it's catching on. I believe they charged my credit card when I booked the tour (but could be wrong about that), but you can cancel, and I believe it's up until 48 hours before. I called the # listed in the post above and didn't even think of asking MS.

Go for it!

Thanks to those of you who have been on the tour.
Flinglizard, we will be there during that same time in October, but I think six is the maximum number per tour.

Did you call CRO or MS to book? I think for the other behind the scenes we called CRO, but I thought with the DVC discount we might have to call MS.

I have done the tour twice now and thought it to be just tons of fun and would do it again. We had 8 in our tour both times. It is both easier and harder than you might expect. Easier in that you really don't expect to be able to have the "machine" maintain your balance at all times, but it does, and harder in that you very quickly become accustomed to having the Segway respond to your slightest movements going forward and backward and then also expect it to do the same when you want to turn, but you have to turn the handle on the handlebar to go right or left. It doesn't read your mind.

My son was involved in the "First" competition for 2 years, started by Dean Kamen, who invented the Segway, so we have been fascinated with it for some time now. We had ridden one prior to the tour at a private residence over in Celebration, but found riding thru World Showcase to be a very special experience. I would not think twice about doing it.

I know that the tours have filled up quickly recently, and I would book it as soon as I knew I wanted to do it. They did charge our credit card immediately, not the day of the tour.

Regarding the comment made earlier about keeping you young, both of our tours had Guests from their early 20's to well in their 50's. The younger ones took to the Segway very quickly, no fear or trepidation whatsover. The older ones very, very quickly adapted.

Go for it, it is a blast.

I just booked a tour as a surprise for my husband. We're going in October. I booked through CRO and they asked me if I was a DVC member or AAA member. I didn't have my DVC member number with me when I booked. They said it wasn't required at the time of booking. I was charged the discounted rate of $68 p/p. CRO said to be sure to bring my DVC card with me in case they asked for it when we showed up for the tour. He said that I could be charged the additional amount if I couldn't prove that we were members.

I can't wait to surprise my husband. He has been fascinated with these things since they came out. I'm sure he's going to love it!

I think the group size is 10. I called the WDW-TOUR # and got the DVC discount.

Have this booked for an early December trip (during MouseFest). A group of 10 of us have the entire tour booked for that day! (Yes, the maximum is 10) :bounce:

We are all really looking forward to it! I've read some great reviews on the other boards, and there is a video that can be found here: Segway Video Site
