The "Memorial" in Memorial Day has been ignored by too many of us who are beneficiaries of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Often we do not observe the day as it should be, a day where we actively remember our ancestors, our family members, our loved ones, our neighbors, and our friends who have given the ultimate sacrifice:

by visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.

by visiting memorials.

by flying the US Flag at half-staff until noon.

by flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).

by participating in a "National Moment of Remembrance": at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day, and for Taps to be played.

by renewing a pledge to aid the widows, widowers, and orphans of our falled dead, and to aid the disabled veterans

And here I thought your post was going to upset me, because the title of the post was vague and lead me to the wrong conclusion about where you were going with your post....

You stated exactly why I well up everytime I here the National Anthem.

Thank you for reminding me and everyone else.

Nice post, monkeyboy. :)

I admit I rarely think about the true meaning of Memorial Day, to me its more or less a day to have picnics and go swimming and be with my family. I will stop for a moment this Memorial Day and think of those who have died for our freedom. Thanks. :)

Yes, I have to admit I was looking at it as a day off instead of why we are having a day off. Thanks for sharing this, I will be explaining this to my children this weekend.

amen and very very very well said..

We should all find a veteran or a Current soldier to thank on monday, and every day we can,, sending a special thank you e mail to our son in law.. hes in baghdad now we are very proud of him

Nicely said.
Memorial Day around here is more of a day off then anything else-it's too cold to swim and such. But every year our school holds an assembly for Memorial Day. You see, my school was named Memorial, in honor of the soldiers from the area who never made it back from Korea and Vietnam. So every year there's an assembly to honor those from the area that lost their lives, and since the Iraq war started, to honor the seniors who will be joining the military after graduation.
I have the honor of knowing a member of the National Guard, as well as a former Marine. That of course is in addition to my grandfathers who served in WWII. Those who serve are truly a blessing to this nation.
Froggy, please thank your son-in-law. He is a hero for serving this country.
