Wishes Dessert Party and Food Allergies

I am wanting to book the Wishes Fireworks Party for my birthday in June, but I am concerned due to my son having food allergies. He is allergic to tree nuts (NOT peanuts though) and fresh fruit. I read in another thread that they can bring you a special plate, but he would rather be like everyone else and eat from the buffet. We would just need to know what to avoid. Would someone be there to tell us which desserts have tree nuts, or will they be labeled? Will he have enough of a selection to choose from?

We did the dessert party in 09 and this was the plate my dd got:

She is milk, peanut and tree nut allergic. They did walk us through the buffet but this was a better option for us. Her favorite was the apple spice cake but everything was delicious!

I saw this plate on another thread. It does look delicious! I just know my son, and I'm pretty sure he will want to eat from the buffet instead of getting a special plate. I know there's fresh fruit on the buffet, but he won't feel like he's missing out there. He will want to eat the unhealthy desserts! I just wondered if there were many made with tree nuts.

We have not done this one but I think it may depend on how allergic your child is to tree nuts. MOST bakery made items have a warning of some type for tree nuts. It may just be made in a facility that processes nuts. There is also a HUGE chance for cross contamination at dessert bars. DGS is peanut allergy but ok with tree nuts. At buffets we pretty much only allow the soft serve ice cream in a clean bowl located away from the other desserts. Some parents are more cautious than us, others less so. I would for sure call ahead and see how many of the products have the nut warning.

my one son and myself are both peanut/tree nut allergic. How or where do you request this "special" plate from?? I assume you do it at time of reservation?Or is it done thru special diets??

People have a tendency to use the same serving utensil that's in their hand to serve themselves from all sorts of trays so it's possible there would be a walnut or pecan or other nut (or residue) on the serving utensil that he's using to get his dessert.

I hate to say this, but if it'll really upset him that much to be served that large plate of goodies and not get anything off the regular buffet then you're probably better off for safety reason to skip the dessert buffet. His safety ultimately has to come first and it's impossible to ensure safety of the food on the buffet. We've learned to skip activities that will cause more upset than enjoyment.

It's not that it will upset him. He's used to getting a special dessert at Ohana's. Not a big deal. But he also isn't "crippled" by his food allergies. If he can eat from the buffet, he will. He is not so allergic that he can't eat from buffets. We don't have to check packages to see if the food has been made in a facility where there are tree nuts. He just can't eat an actual tree nut. As long as there are plenty of desserts without tree nuts, he can eat off the buffet. I'm just trying to find out if there is enough variety of desserts without tree nuts for him.

Do be prepared though that the chef may not be comfortable with him eating from the buffet even if you are. I am also only mildly allergic to treenuts and because of the cross contam issues in the bakery plus being on the buffet with nuts the normal chef answer as we walk a buffet is that these things are not safe. Even if it's something like a rice krispy treat or toll house cookie I have read ingredients for other places and KNOW there are no nuts they will not verify ingredients and let you eat it. I'm sure some of it is just protecting themselves from liability but I find it aggravating at times not being able to eat things I normally would (ie produced in a factory with nuts) at WDW but I also don't want to ruin my vacation either with a trip to the ER. They understand allergies pretty darn well at WDW but they don't get everything and things like this are an example of that. I'm significantly more allergic to beans than nuts and I've had numerous issues at WDW where beans slip by them but nuts they are just really spooked by. Perhaps you could show your son the picture of the allergy plate since that is the most likely thing and let him decide if he'd be ok if they have to give him that rather than the buffet?

It’s not a restaurant. There is a special desert buffet at MK where you can eat dessert and watch the Fireworks. Here’s information from wdwinfo page about it:
Magic Kingdom Fireworks Dessert Party
This event is subject to availability. Adults 10 and older are $27.68 and children 3-9 are $14.90 (prices may vary during peak and holiday seasons). This price includes tax, but not gratuity. Gratuity isn't required, but is an option if you so desire.


The party includes a self-service buffet at the Tomorrowland Terrace with sweets, beverages and exclusive viewing of Wishes, the nightly fireworks. Reservations are not required, but are recommended as seating is limited. To reserve a space, prepayment is necessary. Space permitting, there may be seating available for walk-ups. I just booked this for Feb and I can't have any dairy. I have never booked it b/c I assumed I couldn't eat anything. I am so excited I may actually get dessert that ins't only tofutti and divvies. At least I hope I get more than tofutti and divvies.

So is an email to special diets enough or will I need to call a chef?
