Is the location where the Wishes Dessert Party is held above a smoking location?

Those of you who had attended this party was the smoking an issue drifting into the dessert party area?

Thanks.

Yes, it is located above a smoking location.

When we went at the end of April, there was a nice breeze that also brought the cigarette smoke up to us. Whether you get smoke or not depends whether there is a breeze and where you are seated at the party (we were seated on the lower level right by the photopass photographer) and how many people are smoking below. When we got our pictures taken by photopass photographer, I looked down and the smoking area was packed with smokers. Because the breeze was so strong, it actually felt like someone was smoking 3 feet away from me - I looked around to make sure then realized it was coming up from the smoking area.

The party was wonderful but the cigarette smoke did impair our enjoyment of the event. I don`t understand why Disney has an eating area above a smoking location - doesn`t seem like good planning to me because if there is a strong breeze, the people eating above are going to be inhaling smoke too.

I didn't notice any smoke when I was there last year for the dessert party. Either the area for smokers was closed or nobody was there or the wind wasn't blowing. I would have noticed as I get asthma from smoke, if I can smell it -it's usually too late (asthma attack).

I was just at the Dessert Party on Friday and I didn't notice any cigarette smoke at all.

We were there in May & we did not notice any smoke. We were right up front at the railing.

Yup, it is. We had a bunch of smokers the night we were there, and it was a sweltering July evening with not much wind, but we did smell it. We have serious smoke sensitivities/asthma/allergies over here, so we watched it carefully. Having been to WDW many times, and knowing that the smoking section was located there, we took a chance as we figured we could move to the other side of the railing (away from the smoking section side), if need be, so we did that a few times.

We had this exact location and didn't smell any smoke. I guess we were lucky the wind was blowing a different way our night?

Have it noted on your reservation so that they seat you a the section furthest away...can't remember but there are sections a b and cpirate:

OP - thanks for asking this question. I was seriously considering booking but not now. My kids and I are EXTREMELY sensitive to smoke. I can't even run our AC on fresh air in the car because someone smoking in a car in front of us will give me a terrible headache. I would have been very upset to pay $100 to smell smoke. :headache:

Soooooo.... after all my complaining about smoke, I booked a Dessert Party! :upsidedow I told DH and the kids about it, and they REALLY want to give it a try. I'm just going to pack some Benadryl and Tylenol just in case. The boys will have their puffers, so I think we'll be fine even if it does float up to us. Hopefully we'll be lucky and not even notice it. :goodvibes

Oops... forgot to post my question. :guilty:

Is there a section I can request that will give us a good view and still be as far away as possible from the smoking area? :confused3

All the sections have a good view. And people are always free to go stand at the railing too, or walk back and forth,

I'd tell the CM over the phone to note it on the ressie.

More importantly, I'd explain it to the CM when you check in. In case the phone ressie person did not tell you (or got it wrong), the party starts 1 hour before the fireworks that night. But you should be at the Tomorrowland Terrace 15-30 minutes before the start of the Party. A CM there checks you in and gives your entire group wristbands, then lines you up. At the time the party starts each group is escorted to their table in the order that they checked in.

When I made my ressie the CM on the phone told me my ressie was for 9:20. I thought it sounded odd. We were in the MK one evening while the Dessert Party was going on (several days prior to our ressie) so I went over and asked. The CMs actually working the party were appalled that I had been given such bad advice. But since then I have seen several other people on this board who were told the same thing. If you don't show up until 9:20, you'll have missed a big chunk of the time you paid for. And just maybe they'll have given your table away to a walk-up by then!!!

Thanks for the advice! Our reservation is for 9:05. I figured we'd get in line around 8:30ish. I'll definitely call back and ask them to add a note about the smoking to our reservation. Thanks again!!! :goodvibes

At least for as long as I recall, that area below where the wishes dessert party is, was a smoking area. I did notice that many times that smoking area is roped off at times in the evening but that may just be for special events, not sure.

Wow! While I've never entertained the thought of going to the Dessert Party (diabetes prevents that luxury), I did not realize there was a smoking area below that terrace - and I'm an occasional smoker.

I can honestly say I'm surprised at the logistics of this and suggest if any of you encounter cigarette smoke at an event you paid boodles of money for, that you write a letter of complaint to WDW. If no one complains to the top, it's not likely to get changed. Mentioning your annoyance to the CM's of the dessert party is akin to spitting in the wind. You need to make your complaint known to the "Big Cheese" (not Mickey in this case).

Good luck with this. If I were management in charge of the parks, I would ban smoking, entirely. And this is from a smoker's point of view. I find my olfactory sense raped when I merely walk past a smoking area! It doesn't bother ME to smoke, but it does bother me when I walk into a huge cloud of smoke. For that reason alone, I don't smoke at the parks.

the cms booking this definitely are misinformed. I booked this today for next week and was told it is a "standing only venue". i know that is not true since i've already done it. I did not notice the smoke when we did this in december. If i did, i would not hesitate to march down to city hall and let them know. once i start coughing, it's not a good thing. back in december, we were given wrong information about what time to arrive. we were 1/2 hour late since we did not know better, in time for fireworks but all the desserts were picked over and not being replenished.

It can't be a 'standing only' venue. It's a (sometimes, anyway) quick service restaurant, complete with tables AND CHAIRS :teeth:. People do, apparently, get up from their assigned tables - the tables to which they were assigned in advance and to which they were escorted by Cast Members when the area opens and to which they bring their desserts from the buffet - to go to the railing to get a better view of Wishes. But it's not a standing-only venue. It'd be a mess.

As for it being "right over" a smoking area, unless something has changed drastically, that's relative. My recollection is, the smoking area is across a wide walkway - the entrance to Tomorrowland - and down an incline. It's also masked to a degree by vegetation. I don't recall a smoking area being close to this location, unless they placed one by the bathroom?

Well, that makes me feel a little better. DS has asthma, and smoke is the primary thing that he needs his inhaler for. Add that to the fact he does not like sweets, and I think he is going to hate this party! I will wait for more info before canceling, but it sounds like a spot in September will be opening up. :(
