A couple of thoughts have been rumbling around in my head for quite some time now. One is: we are a really unique, cool group of people. As individuals we have overcome many, many obstacles and learned so much about ourselves and our abilities. For many of us, taking the step to walk/run/waddle a race is monumental. As a group we’re a bit loopy but huge on caring.

Here’s the second thought focused on my own pursuits. I am so happy and grateful to be where I am today. Able to run and having the life-altering experience of finishing a marathon. I work hard at my training and its paid off well. However, there are times when I feel a bit guilty about the enormous amount of time I devote to my own fitness and my personal pursuit of this “free” addictive sport. Right after running the marathon I started having some grandiose ideas, mostly while lying in bed waiting to fall asleep. I thought, “wouldn’t it be great to organize some sort of charity drive that would help justify my fitness pursuit”. Obviously, its been done and done well by some pretty big organizations. I’ve wanted to participate in a couple of them (the 3-day walk for the cure, TNT) but I know I can’t/won’t raise the huge minimum donation required to be a part of those teams.

Here’s the big brainstorm that boiled out of all this thinking: What if WISH organized a small charity drive? Something with no minimum requirement since nothing is being provided in return anyway. I’ve mulled it over a million times and finally decided I want to pursue it. I’m willing to organize a charity drive for the 2007 WISH WDW races.

There’s a ton of details to work out. But here’s the rough draft:

Anyone willing to participate would be given some info in the form of flyers, brochures, etc. We’d each raise what we can. My vision is to make this the inaugural year of WISH giving that could be the start of something really big. Maybe 10 years down the road WISH would be making huge contributions towards a cause.

That brings me to the cause. Since its my idea and I’m willing to do the work to get it off the ground, I want to pick the cause. I want to raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation. Here’s a super quick blurb of why its important to me:

When my dad was fourteen years old, he spent 3 months in the hospital with acute Nephritis (Bright's disease -for which there was then no treatment) and nearly died. The doctor called the family in for the final regards, but he made a spontaneous (miraculous) recovery. However, the doctor said he should get an education because he would be unable to do physical labor. He did physical labor much of his life as well as getting an education. Then in 1995 he became ill and discovered his kidney function was down to 30% and his kidneys were shutting down. He went on peritoneal dialysis in 1996 for 3 years and then on hemodialysis. He was on hemodialysis for 4 years and received his kidney in October 2003.

Medicare and private insurance covers most of the medical costs but none of the stay required. In my parent’s case, they stayed in Tampa for the mandatory four weeks post op. Many families don’t have the resources for such a stay. The NKF can help with these expenses, plus further educate people about organ donation and health issues. And there's always need for more research funds.

So, my call to action is this: Are you interested in trying to raise funds?

Each person can decide for him/herself what to aim for. Anything would be great. Even if ~25 of us each raised $50 each that would be $1,250 that otherwise wouldn’t have gone to a good cause.

I don’t know yet if we should try to pool the money and send it as one gift or each person be responsible for sending his/her own contributions in. I’ll have to find out about tax information if donations are going to be used as tax deductions, etc Either way, checks would have to be made out to the individual or directly to NKF since WISH is not an official charity organization. There’s a lot to figure out at this point but I’m willing to do it if there’s enough interest. I’ll contact the NKF and find out what I can.

So please give me your honest feedback.

Sunny

Count me in Sunny. I've thought about trying to go with the "big" fundraisers, too, but knew I would not be able to raise the required amount.

This would work perfectly.

Hi Sunny: I've thought a lot about this since I saw your post. I think it's a good idea too. However, since you asked for honest opinions, while I really like the sentiment and the cause - I really am not good at fundraising. This is just me personally - I am really intimidated about asking people for money for anything even if it's a great cause. I've finally admitted to myself that it is not something that I can do. I looked into the TNT in the past, but I just could never raise that much money. I would certainly donate my own money to the cause, and maybe I could ask a couple of family members but that's about all I could do. Sorry, I'm just too uncomfortable to do the fundraising part. I do think it's a great idea though.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I LOVE the idea of it, but as someone is afraid to call and order pizza (crazy I know  ), asking people for money is very scary for me!!

I do think it is a wonderful idea and would gladly contribute my money to the cause.

Dave,

Thank you so much for your honesty. I am exactly like you and Sap1227 (I don't like ordering pizza either!). In fact, when my daughter’s school asked us to sell candy bars I bought the whole box because I couldn’t bring myself to ask anyone! That is why I could never do the giant ones like TNT. That is also why its taken me two months to post this idea from when I started thinking of it.

I'm hoping to step out of my comfort zone just a little and ask a few people for small contributions. I think (for me anyway) collecting $10 from 5 people is possible. Or, collecting $30 from 3-5 people and putting in $20 of my own. Any little bit is welcome.

For me, I find that I invest so much time in training that I don’t have time or energy to do much community service so this is my way to justify my running addiction!

Just keep an open mind! Once the “theme” is developed, you may find it more doable. And truly believe that even a little is worth the effort.

Sunny

Sunny - I definitely appreciate you setting this up and getting us thinking about it. I would also be willing to try to stretch my comfort level some too. I was thinking that maybe I could ask a couple of family members to sponsor me for $1/mile or something for the marathon. If I could get a couple of people to do that, I could raise $50.

Dave and SAP1227: I totally understand your concerns about fundraising. I too am really bad at it :worried: . I did the same thing as Sunny....I bought the whole box of calendar's for my DD's fundraising event LOL. I just felt bad asking people to buy them around the holidays. I was going to do what you said....ask my family members only to sponsor me for some amount per mile. I also have a friend who went through a kidney transplant last year and I know they would definitely support my fundraising as well. My goal will be $50-100, I'm not going to try to raise thousands as I know that is well out of my comfort zone :).

But as Sunny said, it's no pressure at all. Even a few dollars counts :thumbsup2 .

I think this is a great idea, and if I don't participate in January (still waiting to approach my boss) I will be glad to donate to the cause.

This is so awesome! What a fantastic idea, Sunny! Dave, Christy and whoever else, I think raising any amount of money..however small... is exactly what Sunny has in mind.
Sunny, my family has the gene for polycystic kidney disease running through it. I have cousins and aunts who have died from it as there was little known about it or how to treat it. That's all I'll be asking..just family members. :chat:
Keep us posted on how we go about this. Don't forget us 1/2 marathoners!! Anne :shamrock:

Ann-- thanks! The half and full will both be participating :goodvibes Thanks so much for your support.

Sunny

Sunny,

Have you seen this...

2006 NKF of Florida Gift of Life 5K Run/Walk for Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness

I kinda feel like Dave and Christy. Love the idea, love the cause, but don't like asking other folks for donations. I wouldn't mind making a personal donation though. One question, did NKF have a team at WDW like TNT and the Stroke team? I thought I remembered seeing an NKF presence, but it was a bit of a blur :teeth:

I tripped over this site today.

It says it's to help with fundraising and allows you to create a webpage that you can email to family and friends.

Thanks! That looks perfect. I will read it thoroughly when I get a chance. That would solve the problem of how to collect funds.

i always knew WISHer's had really big hearts -- this proves it!

wow! what a great idea -- sunny you are a gem. though you may want to consider reposting or changing your title b/c i had no idea what to expect, just noticed this and was curious. anyhow -- i share some of the same feelings for the big fundraising deals with 1/2/full marathon events. I had requested information on Joints In Motion as I feel in my heart I really wanted to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation in honor of my DD who has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. But when I got the info and saw my cost to register and then not being able to pick where i stayed, etc -- i wasn't so interested in raising funds knowing that a portion would go for overhead. I just really want to raise money for the cause.

so i applaud this effort -- truly -- but my heart is somewhere else as far as charities and I hope you all can understand why I may choose to steal your knowledge of that wonderful website and pursue my cause. I will bow out gracefully here, but anything I can do to support this incredible WISH effort please PM me --

Hi Sunny - I am sending out a similiar form from the Breast Cancer Research run, when I registered for the race you were automatically given your own website that you can send e-mail forms from. I would add a link but I don't think it is allowed by the DisBoards to do so.

So far, people have donated $50.00 to the cause (I only started on Monday). Again, I am one of those people who aren't great at fundraising and I'm also uncomfortable with asking people to donate. However, I think it is great to give to fundraising. :thumbsup2

I've looked into the firstgiving site. They charge 7.35% on donations. That sounds a bit high to me. The other thing I don't like about it is that it is preset up for an individual so it says things like "I" and "my" and "mine" which makes it sound like its just my page instead of the WISH team page. Also the last paragraph about "donating through this site..." is their wording not mine. I am going to see if there's some way for me to set up a site directly with NKF that wouldn't have that overhead. But in the meantime I started a site at the firstgiving.com since its free to set up.

This is the site so far. I want to edit the blurb to be more compelling about us WISHers. But its a first stab.

I'll keep you posted. It may be that we are best getting checks payable to NKF and sending them in snail mail. I'll see.

Thanks for your support :grouphug:

Sunny
