Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Just found out we need wisdom teeth extracted. All four, not impacted. Dentist recommended IV sedation.

We live in midwest. Our insurance covers 80% provided we go to in-network oral surgeon which we plan on doing.

How much out of pocket should we expect...know it will be rough rough estimate. We have consultation in September but trying to get an idea.

Depends a lot on the area. Sedation can be expensive, since they are not impacted it should be less for the extractions. How many are "we"? Sedation in our area of Ohio runs $200-up and the extractions $125 and up. Your insurance covers pretty good if it's 80% some plans only cover 50% (after deductible). You could go seperately and only have one co-pay at a time.

My son had his removed last summer under IV sedation (but he only had two instead of four). None were impacted, but would potentially wreak havoc with his orthodonture. Covered 100% by BCBS. Nothing charged to me at all.

Have the office submit a pre-determination claim with your insurance. Thelat should indicate an exact $$$ amount for planning purposes.

One of my children just had 4 wisdom teeth removed. The oral surgeon charged $420 each for 3 of the teeth and $495 for one that was harder to remove. Anesthesia was $415. I live in the southwest.

I live outside of Indianapolis (so midwest) and a friend's son just went in for consult. His total with anesthesia was about $1500. I think it was $200/tooth plus $800 (??) for anesthesia. Whatever amount he told me, I was floored.

They're going to try to go to the mom's hometown, a small Indiana town far from the big city and see if it's cheaper. I'm guessing their insurance wasn't covering any of it, or they don't have dental.

Our youngest had hers out last month. The total was $2600, we had to pay about $1200 of that out of pocket. (North Carolina here).

We have the same thing coming up
My husband went back to school last year for a work/school program and the insurance is awful compared to what we used to have.

We're covered for 50 percent with our dentist or 70 percent if we drive an hour and a half away for an in network dentist. Up to a maximum of $750 per family member. DD needs all 4 teeth out and they are growing in completely sideways.. so impacted.
She is 15 and has gorgeous straight strong teeth. I can't wait another year and a half until we have good insurance again as they are already starting to give her headaches and jaw pain.
Just going to have to suck it up and get it done.. but some of these numbers are scaring me.
If need be I will cancel my February trip but I am hoping that won't be necessary.

Milwaukee chiming in: DD had her 2 wisdom teeth out last November. The charges were about 1800, and if I recall...our out of pocket was just under "$400 - maybe around $380 or so.

The Rx that get prescribed are additional. I think DD got a relaxant before the procedure, and had pain killers and an antibiotic. It wasn't a ton extra - but she did have dry sockets - so she did go through more painkillers than the average patient.

Our dental nsurance also pays 80% with an out of pocket max of $1500 per family. DH had 4 impacted removed in March and our part was $327. That did not count the prescription for pain meds after but those were picked up by our regular health insurance. We asked people at my company who had it done and what they paid so we knew we would be close on our guesstimate. We had to right oral surgeon a check for $400 but they sent us the difference back within a week. Good luck.

I had all 4 of mine removed last summer at the dentist just using laughing gas. I did fine. Was in bad pain for a few hours after but you would have that either way. Total cost was $1300.

In SoCal, my bill was $1,415, the IV alone was $460, we paid $360 out of pocket. Must say I am a proponent of the IV sedation, I don't remember a thing, and my DH told me I was answering questions through out the thing, no pain afterward even with impacted wisdoms.

I forgot to mention in the above post that with 4 horizontal impactions we are most likely looking at an Oral Surgeon and day surgery at the hospital. It's not going to be the run of the mill extraction. So I really need to get researching to find out what is covered and what isn't.

Just had our consultation today with surgery on Thursday. If insurance pays nothing, we pay $2105 (estimated). Our appt today was $130. The extraction will be in the Oral Surgeon's office. He did an extraction and implant for me a few years ago.

Breakdown is thus:
General Anesthesia $355
Extra Anesthesia (15 min) $150
Four surgical extrations - full bony impaction $400 each

Four impacted, no long roots with nerves wrapped around them.

You know I hadn't even considered that!
If it's done in hospital, with an oral surgeon, there is a good chance that some of it may be covered by medical rather than dental. Thank you for mentioning that

I had mine done in 2010. It was around $800 out of pocket with similar insurance to yours.

Some health insurance will NOT cover...what insurance do you have? I am in Chicago, my dental is Aetna, health is United Health Care who refused to cover it. My daughter had 4 full-bony removed with sedation and our cost was $312 out of pocket, after what the insurance covered, which was 80% up to $1500 a year, but I went to a preferred provider that negotiated the rates with Aetna. Good news was, she had ZERO complications and pain afterward.
