i was looking into wireless remote controls for my rebel xti anyone have any suggestions.

i was looking at either the RC1 or the RC-5

On the wireless, but I just purchased the wired remote.:thumbsup2 I like being near the camera (not in front of) so I went wired instead of wireless. I am looking forward to using it with the camera in Bulb mode for the new fireworks during MVMCP.:cool1:

I just bought the Canon RS60-E3 remote (its wired) and have had great luck with it. I use it to take low light pictures and family portraits. I don't stand in front of the camera a lot when taking pictures and I thought I read about the IR remotes not firing well for fireworks and stuff if you are behind the camera (someone please feel free to clue me in on this one).

That is the exact remote that I decided on, and I don't WANT to be in front of the camera. I felt like I could do everything I wanted to (mostly fireworks) with this one.:thumbsup2

We got the RC-1 for DW's XT, it works ok even at a decent angle from the sensor. I wouldn't bother with wired if I had the option of wireless for my 30D.

The only downside I can see is if someone very nearby also has a RC-1 and you trigger each others cameras. Possible but not too likely.

The wireless one is great if you are going to be standing in front of the camera, say to take a family photo with you in it. But for things like fireworks and stuff where you are usually behind the camera, it does not work as well. You have to put your hand in front of the camera and point the remote at the sensor on the camera. I've never gotten part of my arm in the shot, but it could happen. Its more inconvenient than anything else.

But while its inconvenient, you can't really use the wired one for family shots. So if you are going to only get one, and you plan on the occasional self portrait/family shot, go for the wireless. But thats what works for me, YMMV.

Get the more expensive one, RC-1 if I'm remember right. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12935-REG/Canon_2465A001_RC_1_Remote_Controller.html
The main reason is the RC-1 has the option of 2 second delay, instant and a lock. Plus a little holder do-dad that you can mount to your strap. I don't think the RC-5 has that option for instant firing and I'm pretty sure it's 2 second delay only.

You don't have to be right in front of the camera. We shot 250+ shots of wishes standing beside the camera just barely pointing the trigger at the body. Did the same thing a few nights later with illuminations. You'll be surprised how much you'll use it once you have it. Night portraits are awesome!
