Wireless is here!!

We called Tech Support this morning. The woman we spoke with said they are still working out some bugs and that the service at the Boardwalk in particular has some issues.

Our netbooks see the "guest-wireless" wifi, the signal strength is excellent, but when we try to connect we never get an IP address. The Tech Support person gave us static IP addresses to use (which is what they are doing as workarounds for people having problems) but that didn't work in our case. As my DH explained it, it appears that we're getting connected to something but that something isn't routing anything.

We did manage to connect with DH's tablet out on the balcony but it only worked for a few minutes and then it dropped the connection.

Very frustrating!!

We are checking in to OKW 10/22 and I just called front desk at the resort and was informed they do not offer wifi.

You don't call the front desk when you call - you just get the call center (even when you call from your room you don't get the front desk). I'm sure people on the phone lines have no clue as to the status of wireless in the resorts at this time.

Good-googly-moogly! :thumbsup2 You gotta be kiddin' me!

This has got to be in the test environment. I believe I'd bet an inordinate amount of money that nothing even approaching these sorts of speeds holds up over the long haul.

Performance on the wired backbone has always sucked, at BEST. I don't remember exactly what I usually get at AKV but I know it was generally < 512k. I've never been able to stream from my Slingplayer as home to a Slingcatcher in the room which is EXTREMELY frustrating.

I guess now I'll have to take my router to use as a bridge device for my devices that are hard-wired (like my Slingcatcher) if the wired connections are going away (I, personally, find that hard to believe since the infrastructure is already in place, paid for, and done.). I can't catch a break! :rotfl2:

I'm with you - that is a ridiculous (in a good way) speed. I've tested the wired connection many times and the most I ever got was 1 Mb down.

If that speed's going to stay - WOW!!! I don't know that I've gotten anything close to that in other hotels.

We were at SSR a couple weeks ago and heard nothing about wireless. Wish we had it but nice to know it will be there when we go back.

We're at BWV now and there is no free wifi available from our room. In fact, we've had a terrible time with Internet access since we got here a few days ago. Our router (which has worked fine at BWV and other resorts in the past) will not work in this room. As a test we plugged DH's netbook directly into the network and still couldn't connect. We contacted Tech support and the guy had DH change some settings on his netbook to cripple the connection speed and we were finally able to connect. We are not able to make those same changes to the router's configuration so we can't use it, limiting us to using just one netbook at a time. I sure hope the free wifi starts working soon in our room because accessing the Internet has been a real pain this trip! Sounds like I'll be calling Tech Support again in the morning.

We checked into BWV yesterday. A standard room. We are at the end of the resort near the door leading to the Studio. I'm on my netbook now. I logged right into the wireless with no problem. I have my wireless router too, but decided to try their new wireless first and have to say it's been easy and painless. I do plan to try my router later just to see if it still works. I'm often here for several weeks, so I always need to pay a few online bills. I would feel better using my secure connection. I'll post back how it turns out.

It's working for us this morning too both in the room and on the balcony. Just did a test on speedtest.net: 15.38 Mbps down, 2.6 Mbps up. It will be interesting to see how that changes as more people discover this new service.

Does anyone have one of the wireless access points in their room? Just curious if it's subject to being unplugged or reconfigured by a guest in that room. From speaking with Tech Support on past visits when we've had problems with Internet access in our room, I know that is a problem with the current wired Internet service.

I see that the Contemporary is on the list provided by wdwmagic, but does that include Bay Lake Tower? I was just about to buy an Airport Express in time for our trip in two weeks.

Does anyone think the new president had anything to do with getting this activated so quickly?

Would that be TMI, :lmao: I was like who is TIM, :thumbsup2
Thank you for posting - I could not figure out what TIM had to do with anything!

(I agree now that I know what it stands, for, LOL).

That's what ya get at 7:30AM on a sunday morning before enough coffee!!

:lmao::lmao::rotfl2::lmao::lmao:;)

Well that explains it always get that caffine going. :thumbsup2 Y'all would have to hang out on the Theme Park forum alot to get the toliet humor, they take it so seriously.

Just an FYI, Disney is blocking some sites. For example when we tried to access youtube we got a message that the site is blocked because it contains R rated material.

More than likely Disney is blocking YouTube to save bandwidth and using the R rated issue as an excuse.

They probably block anything related to "Universal" with the same excuse. :rotfl2:

Can anyone say if the old hardwired connections had anything blocked?

I have no idea. I hope they leave the wired connections operational, too. And I hope they remain free for DVCers. Many hotels do leave the wired connection live for more secure transmissions by business guests. It really isn't a problem for me to pack up my router.

I'm sorry but that's a load of crap. I don't need anybody censoring me. I'm a big boy. Anybody with kids needs to address their on concerns in their own way.

Disney will get an earful from me if this remains true. They don't get to decide where I can and cannot go to.
