How do you all feel about using a unsecured public WiFi connection?

:earsboy: Bill

Wouldn't you know. I had one travel router and bought another for our upcoming trip because we have 4 rooms booked. Too late to return it now. Oh well, it will be great to have wireless without any extra hardware! :thumbsup2

I'm with you. I just purchased a wireless travel router before my trip last month to use my iPad. It worked great. I'll still bring it along in December when I stay at BLT just in case.

I'm sitting here at Kidani and the signal is strong. Despite that, I am using my own router. I even had a good signal at the bus stop. I have not been over to Jambo yet.

I'm with you on that one. Maybe it will decrease traffic on the wired backbone so we can get a little speed. That would be a pleasant change! I think I'll continue to take my Linksys for now and see how this all shakes out.

Anybody done any speed tests (www.speedtest.net, for example) to see what the thoughput looks like on the wireless side?

Ok, so I am in the last two bedroom on the 4th floor of BWV and I just ran a speed test and got these results. 20.45 mbps down and 2.43 mbps up. This while another person was on an Itouch.

I spent quite a bit of time with tech last night ( 45 min) and was told that they were capable of handling 6 devices per room before they max out.

Also, for those considering bringing routers in a few months, I was lead to believe that the wired connection would be unavailable shortly. Makes sense, why would they pay for both services. When I had difficulty connecting with my Vista laptop, he asked how long I was staying and when I told him 7 days, he said that he wanted to make sure I had a wireless connection because he was not sure if the wired would be available for that long.

The connection has dropped a couple of times and I had to simply click on wireless connections and reconnect. And that was early this morning. Spent all day in the park so am just getting back and it is working fine. Fast enough for me.

Btw weather here is perfect...sunny low humidity and low to mid 80s.

Life is good :thumbsup2

I was reading about this, is this just a test program or is it just that the Free part is temporary?

In the BWV right now using my iPad...love that we have wireless now!

Jenny:)

I do it all the time when traveling or using my notebook at restaurants. :surfweb:

But then I live dangerously I actually sit on public toliets. :lmao:

We're at BWV now and there is no free wifi available from our room. In fact, we've had a terrible time with Internet access since we got here a few days ago. Our router (which has worked fine at BWV and other resorts in the past) will not work in this room. As a test we plugged DH's netbook directly into the network and still couldn't connect. We contacted Tech support and the guy had DH change some settings on his netbook to cripple the connection speed and we were finally able to connect. We are not able to make those same changes to the router's configuration so we can't use it, limiting us to using just one netbook at a time. I sure hope the free wifi starts working soon in our room because accessing the Internet has been a real pain this trip! Sounds like I'll be calling Tech Support again in the morning.

Good-googly-moogly! :thumbsup2 You gotta be kiddin' me!

This has got to be in the test environment. I believe I'd bet an inordinate amount of money that nothing even approaching these sorts of speeds holds up over the long haul.

Performance on the wired backbone has always sucked, at BEST. I don't remember exactly what I usually get at AKV but I know it was generally < 512k. I've never been able to stream from my Slingplayer as home to a Slingcatcher in the room which is EXTREMELY frustrating.

I guess now I'll have to take my router to use as a bridge device for my devices that are hard-wired (like my Slingcatcher) if the wired connections are going away (I, personally, find that hard to believe since the infrastructure is already in place, paid for, and done.). I can't catch a break! :rotfl2:

I keep reading that this is just a test. Anyone know for sure? I guess I'll take my LinkSys when we go down in two weeks, just to be safe.

Can anyone comment if it's available or working at VWL? So WL is on the list, but want to confirm it extends to VWL...

Used the free wifi at Jambo on Thursday- I'm pretty sure it wasn't available Wednesday night. I'm at VWL now & it's here too. I had a flyer under my door with instructions today.

Is it like the wifi at HHI where you have to keep putting in a password or will it automatically connect if it gets disconnected?
Our experiences with wifi at HHI were that everytime you opened the computer from sleep or the iphones, it would ask you to put in the alphanumeric password. Was a bit of a pain to have to keep doing that.
But then again, it is nice having the wifi so I shouldn't complain too much.

We are checking in to OKW 10/22 and I just called front desk at the resort and was informed they do not offer wifi.
