Wireless Dog Fence?

Thank you for the advice and your experiences everyone. I think we will invest in one while he's still relatively young. If rather have a real fence but this seems to be a good compromise. We'll be outside with him most of the time anyway but it would be nice to know he's safe if we decide we'd rather be inside instead!

I worried about the not keeping other animals out at first, but our dog is so hyper that nothing else, except the occasional cat will come into the yard. but it may be something you have to watch out for. Draco stays outside most of the time (he comes in at night) and it has kept him just fine without us right there with him.

We have one for our two dogs. We live on an acre, but because it has a circle radius, they can't visit the entire acre. I would say they get half access to the yard.

The collars have fallen off several times and one time the bigger dog chewed it up and we had to buy a new one. The new one has given us trouble. I'm not even sure we could get it to work. The bigger dog pretty much sticks by the house so we aren't too worried.

If it's your only option (vs the buried) I think it works fine. Expensive, but keeps the dogs in the yard!

And I don't worry about other animals coming in to our yard because ours are protective and have a big bark. But smaller animals might be a concern.

Our neighbors had one, but once their dogs broke through once, they couldn't keep them in with it. Dogs learned it would only hurt a little bit.
Why not fence a smaller size area for the dog?

I have a Lab who is a runner. I have to keep him on a tether when he is outside even though the yard is fenced - he can dig under that fence in a matter of seconds and then he's gone. We were considering getting an electric or wireless fence, but I went with him to a friend's farm where they have real electric fences that give quite a zap (meant to contain horses). We saw that he would go under the fence, get a zap and yelp a bit, but it did not deter him from doing it again at all. So we have gone with the tether. Pain won't stop him.

The best time to teach this is, unfortunately, before the dog learns they can get away. Once they see how much fun they have leaving the yard, it's hard to "unteach" it.

Some dogs, depending on their size and block-headedness, will run right through it if they want to get out badly enough.

A pp mentioned another drawback - if the batteries run out.

It also doesn't stop other animals from coming into your yard.

Exactly what I was going to say! We tried the electronic fence with our standard poodle pup. Everything went well until he learned that he could just take the "pop" and go do whatever he wanted. Only, once he was out he didn't want to take that same "pop" to come back home! That dog was too smart for his own good.

It didn't take us long to learn that we needed an actual fence. It kept my Minky safe from other dogs that roamed the neighborhood and my ultra-crazy neighbor.

We ordered one and got it today. The final decision came when he ran into the road the other day. He definitely has a nose on him. He smells something and takes off and this time it took him into the road. Scared me to death. He's fine when we're with him, but we can't always be. Like when I'm getting ready for work and he wants to go outside. He's not outside all the time, so hopefully this will work for now. Thanks for the advice everyone!

My son has used an underground fence for two of his dogs. They learn quickly not to go past and never had a problem with them. They stay in the yard and know their limits. It was never turned up high and was a humane way that worked for them. The dogs were never traumatized or harmed in any way by them. I guess you could just try it and see how your dogs reacts?
