Wired or remote release?

I have a Canon 350D and I am looking at purchsing a remote release, primarily to avoid camera shake when taking pictures in low light. Would I be better off with an IR remote release or should I look for one that is a wire plugging into the side of the camera? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to either?

The obvious advantage of a wireless one is no wires. However you need to have a line-of-sight to the remote sensor (usually on the front), and there is usually a slight delay.

A wired remote leaves you tethered to the camera and is a bit messier, but will have instant response.

I recently built my own wired remote for my Pentax and it is compatable with some Canons - I don't remember the details, but I think most Canon DSLRs use the same connection. (A mini-phone plug like on a cell phone headset.) The cost was about $6 and you can make it as long or short as you want. It's very simple to make if you're comfortable doing a small amount of soldering.

I want the wireless for myself. A cheap, temporary fix that I use is to set the self timer and use that for low light shots. By the time the shutter opens (10 second delay) the camera has stopped shaking.

I just got both. The IR is on the front for the wireless, so it is good for when you want to be in the pic too. But for fireworks etc, I prefer the wired one.

Wireless for when you are in front of the camera.
Wired for when you are behind.

They both have their uses. If you want a wired one, consider the Canon TC-80N3. It costs a bit more, but it allows you to program it to wait as long as you want before taking a shot, how many shots it should take, how long it should wait between shots, and how long to hold the shutter open for each shot.
