OK, I'm reading these posts about extended stays at DVC resorts. Any accountant types out there figure a comparison between having enough points to do 2 - 3 months with DVC compared to buying a condo somewhere warm?

It is fun to think about spending a month or so at the VWL and then, perhaps, moving to HH for another month or so, while the snows come and go up north.

Any financial analysis would be welcome.

It all really depends on which resort you stay at, however even though you may be a timeshare owner, Florida Law still considers it a rental, and no one reservation can be for more than 30 days. Beyond that, it is considered a lease.

To stay in a studio at VWL from Jan 1- March 1, you would need 999 points.

At OKW you'd only need 792. lol.

That's a lot of points ($75,000 resale purchase plus $3,500-$4,000/yr maint) to live in a studio room for two months. Would you really want to live in a studio room for that long every year? Would the proximity to WDW theme parks matter that much when staying for that long annually?

It would seem that you could rent a nicely furnished 2BR condo just offsite for the price of those maint fees without any purchase costs! If you used a service like SkyAuction.com, you'd spend half that and get weekly housekeeping service and all utilities paid.

I guess I just consider DVC the kind of thing you enjoy for vacations but too expensive for longer term planning. Maybe that's just me.

Unless I planned to live in a vacation home or condo for at least 4-5 months per year, I don't think I'd want to own it. Too much hassle with ownership... furnishing, repairs, cleaning, taxes, investment funds, etc. I like weekly rentals, especially when they are so affordable and easy. :)

I tend to agree Lisa P.. It would be quite expensive. It would be nice to, someday, spend several months down south during the winter. Perhaps it would be wise to find a good rental situation and do it that way. Also, the fact that there would be nothing after 2042 is another reason to either buy or just rent short term.

Thanks for the input.
