We're looking at going to the NYC area for New Years and hopping on a cruise right away - does anyone have experience winter driving through the Poconos? We'd be on the I-90/I-81 ..... certain death, or not too bad if we plan on taking our time to go slowly? Trying to get from Niagara Falls to NYC or New Jersey

Any insight is appreciated!!

Just remember you will be on mountainous terrain so getting up the mountain can be tricky depending on the conditions. Make sure you have good tires. Most people in that area have snow tires or chains for the cars. Have supplies in your car should you get stranded.

We have used I90 west to Rochester and always take I81 to drive to WDW. I90 is right along the lake so is prone to lake effect snow. I81 just seems to be sketchy in places so be prepared to slow down. We find it no worse than the 401 on a poor weather day when all is considered.

Yes, multiple times.

And we have simply been lucky with the weather and have had no issues.

We have started to cut across the US-17 as the other route through New Jersey, and this being someone who has no issue with city driving, has some very quick veer overs for routes. And there is nothing, and I'm laughing, like getting stuck in the EZ pass lane on the George Washington Bridge and having NYC/NJ drivers insanely furious. Nothing! Laughing.

I find the US-17 (they were redoing it to be the 86 - might be finished and continues into the 6 down to Harriman) beautiful and relaxing.

We have started the US-17 from the 81 and also meandered down south right after Buffalo to meet it right at Corning and taken the 86/US-17 from there.

With these kind of situations they are always a hit and miss with weather, I really watch the weather the day before leaving. And have left a day early at times, if that was doable.

However, I do keep in my head that the locals in these areas have to go to work. And do their errands. Ie. live and use the roads daily. Insert smile and wink.

Have done NYE a couple of times in NYC, once directly after Christmas in WDW. Was just talking today how fun and fantastic that combination was for us.

Have a wonderful trip. Enjoy!
