Don't worry - no experience necessary. One guy in our group came along with his wife and I don't think he really wanted to be there. He looked more like a beer kind of guy.

Do make a reservation in advance but no need to rush to do it. There were at least 8 open spaces when we did.
As for buying the wine, of course you can purchase any of the wines. I was really surprised that they really make no attempt to get you to buy the wine. They just make a comment at the end that you can purchase the wine before you leave and that was it.
