Hi Everyone,
I need some suggestions on where to buy wine (I assume liquor store) as a gift for DD's ice skating coach..and what kind of wine I should get...I do not drink and have no idea what I should buy

DD's coach is British (not sure whether it is relevant), and she drinks..she has been very nice to DD, sometimes gives her extra time etc. DD asked her on what she would like... she mentioned "ask your mom to buy me a bottle of wine"...

thanks for the suggesitons

Around here, there are several local wineries. I have often given a bottle of local wine for a gift. It tends to be inexpensive so it isn't a huge investment.

Is there any way to find out if they have a preference of red or white? If you don't know, go to a wine store (not just a corner liquor store) and ask the person working there to suggest something nice in your given price range.

Some wine drinkers have a strong preference over one or the other.

thanks.
What is a nice price range? I don't want to be too cheap, will something between $50 to $100 be good?

thanks.

Something between $20 and $30 will be good. Something $50-$100 would be exceptional and probably not what your wine drinker is expecting.

You may want to ask another question as to what kinds of wines she likes.
Average priced wines in a wine store would be in the $10-$20 range. Cheap would be under $10.

Some wine drinkers like the koolaid wines (such as Barefoot - you can get it in the grocery store or at CVS); others are more into what grape it is, or some like whites versus reds. Others like sweeter rose wines.

If you are willing to spend $50-$100, you could get her 2-3 decent bottles and mix it up. Do a nice (white) Chardonnay, maybe a Cabernet, or a Shiraz or a Merlot.(These would be my choices and which bottle would depend on what the seller had.) A lot of 'light' wine drinkers like Prosecco or sparkling wines.

I would say you could find something nice for between $35-$50. If you have a local wine shop, go there and ask for recommendations. I would go for one bottle of a good red wine.

Honestly, my rule of thumb, never pay more than $10 for a good bottle of wine, never pay more than $20 for a great bottle of wine. My uncle bought a bottle Dom Perignon for my wedding and while it was good, it wasn't worth the crazy markup. If you have a Costco near you, check out their selection. My favorites are Apothic Red (don't like the white), Franics Coppola Claret, Kirkland Pinot Grigio, Kirkland Malbec, and most Beringer wines. I've tried quite a few expensive wines and in the end I never felt they were worth the price tag, most cheaper wines I had had were better, hence the rule. Under $5 though and the quality gets pretty terrible.

Apothic Red is good. I also like the Apothic Dark though around me anyway its harder to find.

Tried the Dark when it first came out and didn't care for it, it tasted like they picked way to early. Hoping to try it in a year or so with better results.

I second the local winery wine. We too have several local wineries where I live and giving something local is good. The people there can help you out. Maybe a nice bottle of red and a white :)

Apothic Red is VERY good. So is Apothic White. You could easily give a bottle of both for less than $25. Another good one I found recently at Target is Pop Crush. I like both the red and the white in those.

Sounds like you are wanting to spend $50

I think a nice wine and cheese basket would be nice. Like others have said, it would be nice if you knew if coach preferred red or white, or sweet or dry. I think since you are on a Disney board, maybe if you do go to a local wine store (Large liquor stores like Binney's also carry good selections of wines) I would add a bottle of Rosa Regale (they serve it by the glass in Italy/Epcot, its a nice mild on the sweet side, taste of berries) It's about $20 in our liquor stores

My rule is...you can never go wrong with a nice Beaujolais. $10 - $20 in most stores.

We tried Pop Crush red as well. I was pleasantly surprised. It was very good

I don't think I would blow a lot of money on a bottle of wine if you aren't familiar with what kind they like. I personally don't like red wine at all, love sweet whites, hate dry whites. So buying wine for someone else is tricky.

I would get one red and one white..California wines!

Red- Merlot or Pinot Noir..these are lighter GOOD reds..Francis Coppala makes a good reds in the $15 -20 range
White...Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay

Francis Ford Coppola Claret is really nice (it has the black label). Its under $20. He also has a nice Rose called Sofia for under $20.

The regular Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon is good and is about $30.

For something pricier, Stag's Leap Artemis is very nice. Trader Joe's Wine shop has it under $50.

hhhhmmm wine... (am 7 weeks preggo so cant have any!!).

Drinking a Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon right now - Costco - 6.95 and for that price it's not bad at all. Although the Costco guy told me he didn't like it and I almost put it back. Different strokes for different folks.

I used to drink the Stags Leap every so often. Good but a little above my budget now. I should have put some in the cellar.

Congrats on being pregnant!
