Windsor Hills: Where 3 beds cost the same as 6

We are just thinking about our March 2009 vacation. Honestly, I am not sure whether we will return to WDW, go someplace else, or skip a trip and get some kitchen appliances (I must be getting old!). But I wanted to start getting some quotes, so I did an inquiry at windsorhillsrent.com for 6 bedroom pool homes for one week in March. The quotes were virtually all for around $1200. This includes pool heat, taxes, etc.

Then I decided to get quotes for 5 bed homes in WH, but I accidentally hit the send button, and ended up asking for every owner on that site to send me a quote, from 2 bed condos up to 6 bed homes. I have read every reply and sorted them into subfolders.

Here's what my "research" indicates: by far the cheapest places to stay in WH are the condos. Quotes ranged from $400 to $800 for the week. (FYI My mother stayed in a 2 bed condo last year after we moved to the Portofino Bay and I did not care for the cramped size of the living area. There were some other problems unique to that unit, also.)

But then, from 3 bedroom townhomes (the units with the splash pools) all the way up to 6 bed homes, the price is the same... about $1200, give or take a hundred, including pool heat, taxes, cleaning. Several of the three bedroom townhomes quotes were higher than the 6 bedroom quotes.

Before someone chimes in to say that the 6 bed quotes I am getting must be from really awful homes with termites and cockroaches and lumpy mattresses and cheapo furnishings ... two of them are from the homes I stayed in March 2008 and March 2007 which I know for a fact are lovely. And a third is from an owner my neighbors stayed with in April of 2008, also lovely. (Some of them probably are rotten, but some of the townhomes are probably stinkers, too.)

My point is, I don't know why anyone would pay virtually the same amount of money for a small 3 bed townhome as a 4, 5 or 6 bed home in Windsor Hills unless space makes them nervous or they don't know any better. That's why I decided to write this post.

Personally, I prefer the homes, since many of the pool homes in WH have games rooms (converted garages with TVs, pool tables, foosball, and darts), and the 6 bed homes have two living rooms. The pool areas are large with both pool and "hot spa", and have lots of room for chaise lounges and dining a la carte. And you don't share a wall with another family.

I know you can have a very nice stay where ever you choose, in a 2 bed condo all the way up to a 6 bed home, at Windsor Hills or the many other lovely developments around WDW. But I thought I'd post about this because it seemed so odd to me, and I hoped it might be helpful to someone who wants a larger home in WH but thinks they can only afford a townhome.

I found the exact same thing so we are renting a 6 bedroom home from jan 31 - feb 14. We only needed a 3 bedroom townhome

Would you mind PMing me with the 6 bedroom homes that you rented? I have some relatives who are interested in staying off site.

Thanks in advance.

Very interesting. I think we've narrowed our place down to Windsor Hills. Now I just keep finding better and better accomodations & rates every time I look. :)

1200 sounds high for a townhome. I know I've rented them (including taxes and pool heat) for less. I wonder if the problem is that you are only looking two months in advance, so the more attractively priced units are gone.

I will agree, though, that the price difference between a typical townhome and a larger pool home at Windsor Hills is a lot less than some people might think.

I'm seeing this too. We only "NEED" 2 BR, 3 would be great (kids could each have their own), but I would really like a private pool AND spa, so I think it will be a bigger home. Not 100% sold on WH yet though - the 48" height requirement on the slide is throwing me - DS could use it, not DD. Looking at Reunion...

Very interesting - we have just returned from a 20 night stay at a 3 br TH - but got a good rate of $100 per night (+tax) - so can't complain :)

I'm jealous!

But I just got a quote that changed the spread -- $3400 for a 6 bed home! Yikes! I truly pity anyone who pays that, unless the home comes with a masseuse, a chef, a nanny and a very good looking pool boy. (Kidding!)

Guess they're looking for someone with a pocket full of money and head full of stupid. I had a lot of reasonably-priced houses bookmarked but my husband just "fixed" my computer. There are just so many choices out there, aren't there?

I am interested in the 6 bedrooms you have some first hand knowledge of. I have received a few quotes but they are all in the 2000+ range and I would prefer one that comes with a recommendation. If you can post the info here could you please PM me.
Thanks

Update

As I get more quotes in, I am starting to see more of a spread: a number of townhome quotes around $900-1000 and larger homes for $1500 and up.

I still think the prices are often quote close (within $150-200) between a townhome and 6 bed home, but I now see that the overlap is not as significant as I thought when I posted.

Interesting...we are looking at doing a week in Windsor Hills in June. I waver on how "cheap" I want to be--we're 6, so theoretically, a 2BR condo could work. But... I like the private pool idea (DD6 could take a dip while DS3 naps, no schlepping ot the common pool every single time, etc.). DD14 would love her own room (not necessary, of course). The older two would love their own game room. So, I'm still debating. Certainly, there's plenty of choices available.

We've stayed at WH a few times but this last time stayed at Emerald Island and really liked that too. The community pool area isn't as big as WH but there are more planned activities going on, also a tiki bar with food and drink. We usually don't use the main pool much when we stay in a pool home. The subdivision is very well looked after and there's also a wooded walking trail there. It was very nice, so it might be an alternative to WH.

But... I like the private pool idea
Our first stay at WH, we moved up to a townhome with a plunge pool, and even that was a lot nicer than "just a condo"---it was big enough for the kids and a parent to splash around in.

But, having a real pool is nicer still. For a few hundred bucks, I think it's worth thinking about.

I've been looking at maps and stuff--Emerald Isle is on my list of possibles, as well, I definitely want close to WDW, as we plan to do AK one day form the home, and also 1 MK day (for DD14's birthday--she wants the dream fastpass option).

When you say Emerald Isle has activites--what types? Would they be family things, for teens, kids? And by tiki bar, that would be like a grill where you could buy snacks, right? I'll have to check their website...

We're doing a split stay--1 week in BCV, 1 week off-site, since we're 6 and airfare is a major cost factor. We already have annual passes. I'm debating doing the Universal passes as well. Since we have quite a rpead--oldest turning 14 on the trip, then DS12, DD6, and DS3. So, my goal is to make the trip fun for all--it's not so easy!

Thanks again for this post
We are in the process of booking a 5 BR for $1200 for the week we are going.
That site mentioned in the first post was great! I got tons of responses with my inquiries. Almost too many. LOL!

Even including pool heat and taxes in the busy March-April season of, $1,200 for 7 nights is quite a bit higher than most townhome owners are charging at Windsor Hills. Perhaps the quote you received was an error.

We just booked a 12 night stay - 4 bedroom home, taxes/pool heat/everything - $195/night.

This will be our second stay at WH. :thumbsup2
